Suitengu's Surge ruling

I have played a Show of Good Faith to Seruma, who was previously controlled by my opponent. After it, I target Seruma with a generical action, and I react with Suitengu's Surge. What will happen with Seruma at the beginning of my next turn?

a) Seruma return to play under my control. b) Seruma return to play under his owner's control

"A"

After Show of Good Faith has expired, your effect is bringing Seruma into play, so you control Seruma.

If you put a Personality into play, you are now the controller unless an effect says otherwise (like Feign Death does). Old "gain control" effects like that of Kolat Master or another player bringing the same card into play prior are all overridden by this more recent establishment of control.

Also, since the Personality leaves play via Suitengu's Surge, the prohibitions against attacking etc. will have expired.

Asako Kinuye exp and Playing With Madness

If Kinuye exp uses her trait to cast Playing With Madness "as if she were a Shugenja", is she considered to be a Shugenja in *all* senses while she is casting it? For instance, would all her abilities be temporarily considered to be innate abilities, and thus be permanently lost (as per the text of Playing With Madness)?

Yes. Casting constitutes taking the Action of a Spell or Kiho, and includes the process of resolving that Action's effects. While resolving those effects, Kinuye is a Shugenja - period. All her abilities are "innate abilities" and are lost due to Playing With Madness's effects.

A similar question applies to Hoshi House Guard and Temple of Hoshi, but here the timing is potentially different since the House Guard has a reaction "after" the Kiho is cast.

Hoshi House Guard says, "Reaction: Once per turn, after this Personality casts a Kiho, return the Kiho to your hand if this Personality is a Monk."

Now, this Action isn't very clear about its timing. To do anything meaningful, it has to return the Kiho you just cast to your hand after it follows the normal play scheme of being put into the discard pile after the Action has resolved. Your Personality is no longer casting the Kiho when this happens (the action has already completely resolved), so he would no longer have the Monk trait if he only has it while casting.

So, when you play this ability, and it checks to see "if this Personality is a Monk," it will not see a Monk.

This is, however, due to the awkward phrasing vs. timing issue of the House Guard, not a general commentary on Reactions played "after casting," or "after playing," which would normally get played while you were still considered to be taking the Action.

Eclipse

So, I was looking through my deck earlier today when a thought struck me. Eclipse reads:

Eclipse 3 gold Bow this Shugenja: Target a card. Until this Shugenja is unbowed or leaves play, actions on the target may not be used. This Shugenja may remain bowed.

What if I cast this spell and then the spell is destroyed (say, by Bloodspeaker Students or the like).

Destroying the source of the Action won't alter the effect. You can still keep the Shugenja bowed and the effect will continue.

So, it seems that blowing up the spell has no effect on the duration of the action.

Blowing up the source of an Action seldom has any effect on the resolution or duration of the effect of the Action already generated.

Duelling questions

1)Kakita's(and Mirumoto's) trait sets his chi equal to his opponent's when he enters into a duel. Does that count an a chi bunus/penalty

Yes.

If so,can it be prevented by effects that stop such bonuses/penalties(like,say,a shugenja casting

"Wholeness of self" on Kakita)?

Wholeness of Self won't work, since Kakita is a card in his own unit, and Wholeness of Self doesn't prevent modifiers, "from cards in that unit."

On: Kakita

Shattered Focus has resolved and is in play, forcing all players involved in a duel to focus at least once.

One player has no cards in his hand, but has in play(and controls)a Tsuma dojo.

One of that player's personalities is challenged to an unrefuseable duel.

Can the aforementioned player choose NOT to use Tsuma dojo's reaction and call strike?

You can't be forced to play an Action on one of your cards unless an effect specifically forces you to use an available or specific Action. Forcing you to do something like pay gold or focus will not force you to use an Action (Limited, Open, Battle, Reaction) on a card that enables you to do so.

Oops (was: RE: [L5R-CCG] Rules for 14 December 2004 [RULES])

Comments Below:

"before your turn ends" will always come before drawing during the End Phase and discarding down to your hand size maximum.

[MARTY] This is just flat-out, a typographical error. It shoudl says "will always come AFTER drawing ...."

End phase drawing happens during the phase, while discarding happens immediately before the end, which can never come until you've already drawn and discarded.

Sorry about the confusion. Things are kind of hectic with the holidays right now.
