Rules for 11 December 2004
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Your Rules for Saturday, December 11, 2004
Damn, is there something I am overlooking?
According to what I am reading here. When you play ambush on someone, you still resolve battles at their provinces. You are decaring an attack phase, in each attack phase, you still resolve battles at each province.
What other battles? There is a standing ruling about that still on the books.
"There are no battles at Provinces. [VRD, 21 December 2000]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Ambush")
Far and Wide [Rules]
My question is: does Far and Wide break the Singular rule? My thought is that it does not because it was written before Singular ever existed, and therefore Singular could not have been taken into consideration with the intent of the card. However, by Far and Wide's text, as long as the region in the province isn't the same as one already attached, I may bring that card into play. Card text follows.
Far and Wide. Limited: Bring a face-up Region in one of your Provinces into play and attach it to that Province if that Region is different from all other Regions already attached to the Province. You must pay any costs of bringing the Region into play.
It does not overrule the Singular rules. It was written at a time where Regions were not Singular.
Further, it is actually possible to have Regions attached to your Provinces that you do not Control (Savagery of the Moto) and thusly would not prohibit you by the Singular Rule from bringing out your own copy of said Region.
Rules Team Answers - Duel Resolution and Multiple Simultaneous ...
Comments Below:
I don't see that in Jeff's two rulings. I see.. "Multiple results apply in the order they're written." The death of a personalty is not a multiple result.
[MARTY] According to Jeff, there are TWO results of an Uso Sensei, Steel on Steel Duel:
Destroy the loser (implicit) Destroy the loser (additional)
The other ruling Jeff made was." - BOTH - effects are fully considered to have destroyed the same card at the same time."
[MARTY] Your post-editting is inaccurate.
There were two rulings. One specifically dealt with situations where multiple effects (usually triggered) attempted to destroy a card - simultaneously.
The other specifically noted that all results of a Duel's resolution occur - sequentially. That means they can't be simultaneous.
Of most important note regarding Uso Sensei is this:
"If another result of winning or losing is added, it is appended to the ones that already exist (if any)." (JA, 10 DEC. 2004)
"Appended" means, "added to the end of."
Hence Duel Resolution goes like this:
Effect 1.) (Implicit) destruction of the loser.
Effect 2.) (Additional) destruction of the loser.
Applied in SEQUENCE, as per Jeff's ruling.

Reconciling Kakita with Mirumoto [RULES]
Comments Below:
That's a major change from the rules, so I don't think you understood the situation.
I control Kakita with 5 cards in my hand. My opponent controls a personality with 0 cards in his hand. I play an unrefusable challenge. My opponent cannot focus so he declares strike. Do I still get to focus or not?
[MARTY] Oh, I see what you're getting at now.
"Players take turns focusing until one strikes." (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 89)
Once someone strikes, that's it. There are no further opportunities to Focus. Kakita doesn't change that, if that's what you are asking.

Weigh the Cost vs World is Empty
If I focus a World is Empty and name a 3 and reveal my opponent's last focus which was a weigh the cost. Would World is Empty discard it or not?
The World is Empty says, "Your opponent reveals his most-recent focus card, if any, and discards it without effect if its Focus value is greater than this card's."
And Weigh the Cost says, "When this card is revealed as a focus in a duel, add 1 to its Focus value and to that of one other card you focused this duel, then draw a card."
So you'd reveal Weigh the Cost, triggering th increase in Focus Value and the draw of a card.
Then you could discard Weigh the Cost due to the effect of The World is Empty.
If I focus a World is Empty and name a 2 and reveal my opponent's last focus which was a weigh the cost. Would my opponent still get to draw a card from Weigh the cost?
Yes. You reveal the focus value first. Then responses to revealing happen, including all the effects of Weigh the Cost. Once those are done, you move on to the next effect of The World is Empty, where it discards Weigh the Cost.
[1]. Kenson Gakka + Non-Printed Tactician Personality
The text "cannot gain Force bonuses from Tactical actions" reffers I'm not able to use the tactical battle "discard a card from your hand to raise the force of this personality" or does it means that if I do so the force bonus become a 0F Bonus? It means... Can I do a 0F tactical bonus and use the Taniko Reaction (i.e.).
"Traits that say "cannot" or "may not" and list an effect (e.g., "cannot be moved out of battle," "cannot be challenged," "cannot challenge," etc.) negate those effects. [Summary of other rulings]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Canceling and negation")
So Kenson Gakka - negates - any Force Bonus from a Tactical Action. You can still successfully take the Tactical Action in the rulebook by discarding a card (and thus trigger Taniko), but any Force Bonus it would normally create is Negated.
[2]. A Wish Granted + Honor Requirement
When I have to met the Honor Requirement of a Personality, only in the Dinasty Phase? A Wish Granted take care of this?
"Personalities' Honor Requirements need only be met during the Dynasty Phase. [JA, 27 September 2001]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Honor Requirements"
Is there any difference between "put into play" and "bring into play"?
No.
[3]. Opposing Player
Can I use the Hida Kuon exp 3 ability in a battle in which there is no units opposing him? What "opposing player" means?
"An opposing player" in this context means any other player who controls cards opposing your own cards in battle. If there are no cards in the opposing army, then no one qualifies as "an opposing player."
Meanwhile, "the opposing player," is old template that has been replaced by, "the enemy leader," on newer cards. It means the Defender if you are the Attacker or an Attacking Ally; and it means the Attacker if you are the Defender or Defending Ally. This status is true during an Attack even when there are no armies at a battle.
[4]. Abilities + (i.e.) Bllodspeakers Tools
Does it only reffer to "Limited", "Battle", "Reaction", "Open"?
Those are the only things defined as "abilities" in the rulebook.
If the target has an spell attached can cast it?
Bloodspeaker Tools says, "Maho Open: Bow Bloodspeaker's Tools to prevent all actions on a target Personality from being used for the rest of the turn."
Abilities of Spells are on the Spell Card, not the Shugenja Card.
If I target a "Tactician ยท Double Chi" Personality with the ability "Limited: draw a card" with an Eclipse what can the personality use?
"Limited: Draw a card" would not be usable.
The Tactical Action printed in the Rulebook could be used, since it is not on the Tactician's card - not be printing or by adding. It exists in the rulebook like the ability to lobby for the Imperial Favor. You simply target the Tactician when you use the Rulebook's Action.
[5].Swittching + The Khol Wall + Slaughter the Scout
"Battle: Bow a Region you control: Target two unbowed Personalities with the same controller. Switch their locations." Is considered a movement?
"Switching units counts as moving the units, and is one effect. Preventing one unit from moving prevents switching. [VRD, 10 December 2000]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Battle: Action Segment")
If the answer still being "yes" please resolve me this example about Slaughter the Scout:
Kevin attack to province 1 with Asako Kinuye exp, and Richard defends with Shinjo REizo at province 2. Kevin decides to start in province 1, Richard pass in his first option to take an action (he has no units) and Kevin use Kaneka's Wind ability to move kinuye from province 1 to province 2 and Richard react with Slaughter the Scout. Is it possible? Can Richard react in a not started battle?
There is no rule against taking Reactions in battles that have yet to resolve during the Battle Action Segment.
However, keep in mind that page 81 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook restricts certain Actions (even Reactions) to the current battle only, including those Actions that refer to an "opposing" card or "this battle."
It is like Moto Kumary switches the position with the Northern Provinces of the Moto (considered a movement) and issue a challenge in a different battle where the action was taking.
It doesn't matter where the Action is taking place. What matters is whether or not Kumari moved into the current battle or not. If Kumari moved into the current battle, then his Reaction which mentions an "opposing" Personality is legal.
If Kumari moved into any battle other than the current one, his Reaction would not be legal due to it saying, "opposing."
[6]. Ruby of Iuchiban + Dead
If I target a personality and dies remainf the ruby effects on him while the ruby remains bowed? What if returns to play with a Feign Death or Shrine to Tsukune?
The effect will continue even if the victim leaves play. However, cards that are not in play are neither bowed, nor unbowed. Further, most cards enter play unbowed.
With Feign Death, you are told that your Personality returns to play bowed. Shrine to Tsukune does not say this (if I recall correctly), so the Personality would enter play unbowed, but still be unable to Straighten.
[7]. Foo Rule: Kami Card
Is a Disciple of the Kami card a Kami Card? It means, Is Isawa a Kami card?
Yes.
They have different means but technically are the same word.
Still, the Thunder Dragon and Oracle of Thunder are part of the greater cosmic force behind the whole notion of the Seven Thunders, so I think it doesn't cause a huge problem from a background perspective.
[8]. Jigoku Sensei
Can I pay 3 gold and discard a Shugenja from a Province? Does the shugenja needs to be in play?
It must be in play. When Jigoku Sensei was printed, the word "your card" meant that you controlled the card. Cards in your Province are not controlled by anyone, thus don't qualify as "your shugenja," for Jigoku Sensei.
It says "Discard," because the Designers did not want you to be able to use "cheat death" tricks like Pit of Blood or Feign Death to circumvent the cost of using Jigoku Sensei.
[9]. Missdirection + To Do What We Must
If I'm not wrong when you take an action... 1- Choose the targets 2-Pay the costs 3-Apply effects
What about if I choose the target of TDWWM, and the personality controller plays a Missdirection to redirect the destruction to another personality. May I choose not to pay the cost of destroy my personality? What about the TDWWM card, does is return to my hand or is discarded?
"You can redirect an action or effect only to something else it could have targeted originally." (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 74, first paragraph)
"You can not redirect costs, either." (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 74)
No, you can't choose not to pay the cost. You have to destroy the personality you targeted for the cost destruction, even if the effect destruction gets redirected to a target you don't care about.
[10]. Ieshige + Taking actions
Does a Ranged 3 Attack destroy an Akodo Ieshige or when the ranged apply he has the +1F bonus? When is the action considered taken from the effects of Ieshige Force Bonus?
The Action is considered "taken" once all the Costs have been paid for and responded to, but before any Effects of the Action resolve.
So Ieshige gets +1 Force before the Range 3 resolves against him.
The same question of point 9 could be applied to Ieshige + TDWWM, what about if it's no a legal target?
"If one or more of an action's targets become illegal between when they are chosen and when the action begins to resolve, that action will not affect those targets. This remains true even if they become illegal, then return to being legal. [JA, 15 June 2004; 22 June 2004]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Actions and abilities")
If you destroy a Personality with 1F and 2PH to pay the cost of To Do What We Must against Akodo Ieshige, Ieshige will become a 4F Personality and thus an illegal target. This happens before any effects resolve, so the destruction effect against Ieshige fails.
Unopposed
I'm sure it has been asked before but right now I cannot find any place where the term unopposed is clearly explained.
'"Unopposed" has no special game meaning; it simply means "not opposed." Yes, Personalities at home are unopposed. [JA, 8 November 2004]' (Accumulated Rulings, "Battle")
That should cover all the rulings for Saturday. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your Clear and Distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
