Rules for 12 November 2004 [RULES]
Yes.. Marty I believe you did over look something.. Egg of Pan Ku says. "no entering-play effects are produced. Would that effect your answer?
"Entering-play effects," do not include any and all effects of Reaction Actions taken in response to a card entering play. They include triggered effects like "When Akuma enters play it destroys the province from which it enters play." and "Lose 5 Honor."
The Egg doesn't even gain any of those traits until AFTER it enters play, which is why that text is there, basically.
Question Sezaru Preview. Web question..
Sorry I have been a little late on asking this, I was looking at Sezaru on the preview page.
I noticed that Sezaru has a trait and it says. Sezaru may bow a spell instead of himself as a cost of casting that spell.
Seeing as this does not say a spell that is attached to Sezaru, does that mean he can bow spells attached to other shugenja to cast the spell.
"bow a spell instead of himself as a cost of casting THAT spell." If he has a way of casting their Spells, then he can bow them instead of himself when he does so. Normally, he can only cast Spells attached to himself.
Also a little grammatical quesiton on Sezaru's preview. The top card of all Fate decks is face up. Should that say. The top card of all Fate decks "are" face up?
It should either stay as-is or say "The top cards of all Fate decks are face-up." I'm not the grammar expert here, though.
One last question. His Open ability is. Once per turn, straighten all Shugenja you control.
Can he use this ability if bowed?
Yes, unless he has lost his Shugenja trait or is under some restriction against straightening.
Also. Can you choose to straighten some of the shugenja you control, or must you straighten all of them with this action. I am thinking you must straighten all of them. But I am thinking about something like Yajinden who I might want to have remained bow and was wondering if there was any wiggle room.
You do not need to straighten anyone who "may remain bowed". You must straighten everyone else.
Shinjo Suboto
Hello,
I am the Defender. I have a Shinjo Suboto face-up in the Province where the current battle is. The Enemy Leader has several units in this battlefield.
Q: ¿Can I bring Suboto into play with his first Battle action, in my defending army?
I assume you do not have any units in the current battle yet.
Anyway, the answer is yes. You can do it because it will give you a unit in the current battle, which is just as good as having one there already.
Note that Suboto could be face-up in any of your Provinces and the answer is the same.
Moto Ogedei Q
Regarding his first trait, does he still survive when he's given a -X Chi token?
Maybe.
"Ogedei's Chi may not be reduced by effects from cards other players own."
According to the Wrath rulesheet, any effects that a token produces the instant it's created are also treated as effects of the card that created the token. So if a card another player owns creates a negative Chi token on Ogedei, it [won't] hurt his Chi. His Chi [will] be hurt if a card you own creates a token on him, a Stronghold creates a token on him, or a token is moved to him.
Cavalry Reserves
On Sat, 13 Nov 2004 13:51:12 EST
There are cards that work of the Cavalry Trait, just like the Oni trait. The fact that Cavalry and Infantry play a part in the base rules seems a small difference.
The question was, what is or is not a "reserved game term". "Infantry" is given as an example of such a "reserved game term" in the rules, but apparently Cavalry isn't one. I'd like to know whether there's a definitive list of such terms, or a rule that one can apply to decide whether a word is or isn't; I was expecting any "rule" that included "Infantry" to _also_ include "Cavalry"...
If the rules give you a definition for it, you use the definition exclusively and you totally ignore the Keyword Rule.
"Cavalry" for a card is not a reserved term, it's a keyword. ("Cavalry" for a unit must be a definition because the Keyword Rule only applies to cards.) "Infantry" is defined as "not Cavalry", so you go by that alone and never check whether the "Infantry" keyword appears anywhere.
"Human" is a definition. That is why Akasha says "Akasha is Human." in her text instead of having the "Human" keyword in bold -- technically, that would be meaningless.
Invincible Legions
It is A. It clearly says "All Personalities you control"
Um.... let's look again:
Formed by all Personalities you control, minimum of 2, opposed by an army with greater total Force.
Yes. It does say all personalities you control, but that's a comma at the end of that statement, not a period. Try reading without the minimum of 2 bit and no commas and what does it say?
Formed by all Personalities you control opposed by an army with greater total Force.
A bit clumsy in wording I'll admit, but I don't think that 'A' is the correct answer.
According to Jeff, 'A' is the correct answer. 'A' is how I read the card too. However, I can see how you would interpret it as you did, because if you took out the "minimum of 2" it would make sense that way. Your interpretation makes sense on one hand, because you can't just use two zero-force people to form the formation while boosting up other units in the army really big. This formation requires that you actually have lower force than the opposing army. One other odd wording question on this one though...
If I outforce the opposing army due to large followers, but my personalities' total force is less than the opposing army, is this formation still in effect?
No. Always compare equal measures without explicit wording otherwise. "opposed by an army with greater total Force" means "greater total Force *than your army*". Targeting "an opposing Personality with greater Chi" means "with greater Chi *than your Personality*". Etc.
Rules Question
I was wondering something about The Khol Wall. Since it says "after your events phase, flip up cards in provinces that have regions attached"...if your first card in Province A is a region, and after your Events phase you flip up the face-down card in Province A and reveal a second region, would you need to wait until your next Events phase before bringing that second region into play?
Yes. You have already checked all cards in that Province for Event/Region resolution this turn.

First of all, it was incredibly difficult to tell what was quoted here, or from where.
What is so different about these cards that one forces you to focus, and the other one allows you to play reactions "instead of focusing"? Specifically for Shadows Claw, wouldn't you not be obeying the card when you play smoke and mirrors from your hand. Since it tells you to focus one of the five cards you look at from the top of your deck?
Okay. You can react to the first focus from Mirumoto then. This is a REVERSAL.
What's important is that you can't strike.
How to read the new card text
From the Dawn of the Empire / Web of Lies rulesheets:
Cards in Web of Lies feature a new method of presenting actions in order to make their elements clearer. A colon separates the special timing of Reactions and any extra costs the action has from its other elements. Following the colon, or beginning immediately if the action is not a Reaction and has no additional costs, are the action's play restrictions, then its targeting requirements, and finally its effects. Not every action will have all these elements, but those that have more than one will list them in this order with no overlap. An action's initial restrictions -- the ones that appear before targeting and effects -- govern whether the action is legal to use. Permission to take an action when it would normally be illegal will also appear here, and will use the word "even" to specify which restriction is being waived, such as "even if you control no units in the current battle." Conditions that appear within the action's effects determine whether some of its effects happen rather than whether the action as a whole is legal. All sentences before the action's effects that start with "Target..." are targeting requirements of the action, and must be satisfied by the player taking the action for the action to be legal (with the usual exception made for Delayed Terrains). Any targeting that occurs later in the card is a part of its effects, does not need to be done when the action is announced, and will not make the action illegal if no valid targets exist. Actions do not target anything without explicitly stating so or by implicitly targeting by producing a Ranged Attack or Fear as the first effect. Everything remaining on the card is an effect. Effects are produced in sequential order as written on the card.
Same Old Same Old Tricks question
When exactly is The Same Old Tricks played?
The Same Old Tricks:
Reaction: Before the second or later time in one turn the same action on a target non-Formation card is used, cancel that action and permanently remove it from that card.
The question, I guess, is about the "used" word. Does the trigger happen before, or after costs are paid?
In other words - if bowing the card is a cost of the action, can Balance in Nothingness be used to cancel The Same Old Tricks?
It will get played as a "before" response to the Action being successfully taken - after all costs are paid, but before any effects resolve.
That should cover everything in the Rules for Monday that doesn't require me to give an answer regarding cards in Web of Lies. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your Clear and Distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
