Ok this showed up to our play group yesterday and from all appearances it's an infinite combo. Kakita Chiyeko and Asahina Nizomi are in play. My opponent declares an attack assigning only Chiyeko. I defend, and take various actions all of which fail to remove Chiyeko from the attack or kill her. My opponent plays Brutal Confrontation.
Yes. This combo works. It has been around for many months now. Combine it with Blade of Penance for infinite honor.
Are there any rules restricting infinite combos in L5R or do we just have to suffer through?
We suffer, for what it is worth. There is far worse degnerate stuff out there that doesn't need to go infinite anyway, and that stuff is more reliable to boot. It has never proven effective enough to warrant errata.
Does Chiyeko's reaction actually work this way?
Yes, though it isn't written properly to do so. That was Dave Williams original intent for the mechanic of the card - to be able to pay costs - so that's the way it goes.
