Rules for 11 September 2004

Martin Lund, sent 15 September 2004 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

First, I just wanted to remind people that Team Whiplash will be holding their annual 9/11 Charity Tournament up in New English to benefit the New York Police and Firefighters' Widows and Orphans Fund and Project Second Harvest on Saturday, October 30, 2004.

For more information, both on playing in the tournament and helping out these awesome charities, please check out the event web page at http://www.koteis.com.

And now, moving on to your Rules for Saturday, September 11, 2004

Can the reaction on Barley Farm be used in the Dynasty phase of the turn it is purchased on?

Not unless you managed to somehow straighten the Barley Farm. Non-fortification holdings enter play bowed, and you can't use the abilities of bowed cards.

Eep'kee and focusing in a force duel

We have a bit of discussion in this issue: ¿Can epkee cancel a force bonus that is make in a duel of force?

A Bonus is still a Bonus, even if it is a 0 point Bonus. Bonuses don't cease to be bonuses just because someone play "In Search of the Future" or something. The rules for Dueling say that each Focus gives the duelist a Bonus, so you can use Eep'kee.

Fury of the Dark Lord question [RULES]

Somebody wanted me to ask this question. Does this card destroy all cards in provinces and in decks?

No. Destroy is typically reserved to refer to cards in play and Provinces. Under the current templating cards which are not in play are typically either Discarded or Removed From the Game, not "Destroyed."

Fall before the master and the temples of hoshi

Can I use fall before the master on a samurai when I play temples with the Temples of Hoshi?

Yes. Your Samurai is a Monk while he casts Fall Before the Master. FBtM only cares about the target being Monk when cast. The Personality can cease to be a monk after casting and the effects will continue as normal.

Rules, rules, and more rules questions

Will sound strategy retrieve pick your battles or is it too late at that point?

You can retrieve Pick Your Battles. It is played before the end of the Battle.

Can you use Superior strategist to retreive a weapon that you could attach as a battle action like blade of thorns?

"Search your Fate deck for an Action card with a Battle or Open action. If you find a card, gain an additional action after this one and play that card for a Battle or Open action."

You can pull that off only if the Item has a Battle Action on itself - like Blade of Thorns. You can search for it since it has a printed Battle Action (Battle: Fear 3).

You can play it with the additional Action granted by Superior Strategist due to its trait, "You may bring Blade of Thorns into play from your hand as a Battle action." You can use the Rulebook Attachment Action as a Battle instead of a Limited, thanks to that Trait.

That should be everything for Saturday the 11th. If I missed your question not related to Dawn of the Empire, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your clear and distinct subject line and I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
