Shi-Tien Yen-Wang Temple’ s Reaction
Hello,
I have posted a question 1 Sep 2004 and I miss a answer for it. The question was forwarded from Marty to Jeff Alexander. Jeff have done some explanation these days about triggers, reactions, before, after,... but no a direct answer to my question.
Then, I have to re-ask it:
I have two scenarios involving Shi-Tien Yen-Wang Temple’s Reaction
A) I have a Personality with 4C, no Retainers in play. My opponent has no Personalities. He want to play a Kolat Assassin. I use the Reaction of Shi-Tien Yen-Wang Temple and becames an ilegal target. What happens?
A.1. Because is an ilegal action the Kolat Assassin remains in hand, no costs are produced neither paid. A.2. The Kolat Assassin is discarded, and 10G cost must be paid. A.3. The Kolat Assassin is discarded, but no Gold is involved. A.4. Other. Please, explain.
4. Kolat Assassin is played and must be paid for, but has no effect on the target that is now 5C. [DE p. 75]
B) I have a Personality with 4C and a Retainer in play. My opponent has no Personalities. He wants to play a Kolat Assassin.
B.1. I may play the Reaction on Shi-Tien Yen-Wang Temple. My opponent must choose the Retainer as target. B.2. I may play the Reaction on Shi-Tien Yen-Wang Temple. Because the possible target was my Personality, the opponent must do the answer of the example A. B.3. I couldn’t play the Reaction on Shi-Tien Yen-Wang Temple, because I don’t know in advance if the Personality is the real future target of Kolat Assassin, or will be the Retainer. My opponent could target my Personality or the Retainer without problems. B.4. Other. Please, explain.
4. Kolat Assassin is played and must be paid for, but has no effect on the target that is now 5C. [DE p. 75]
Is naming a card a *cost* of the Underhand's Open action?
According to the errata that has been in the last rulesheet or two, no.
First ability should start with, Discard the Imperial Favor to name a Political Action card. Also, the restriction against naming any given card more than once applies independently to each player using this Wind. [errata]
Rules: Ambush Duel, Shinjo Horsebow, Hoshi Ishida
Are ranged attacks that a personality can't actually use valid for Ambush Duel? For example, could a non-cavalry personality still add 4 to his or her chi during an Ambush Duel if they have a Shinjo Horsebow attached,
The card text does not say the ability has to be usable, only that the ability must be there. A non-Cavalry personality still adds +4 from Shinjo Horsebow in an Ambush duel.
Rules : Hida Wukau xp
if I target a unit with this ability and then proceed to attach followers (while in battle, for instance) do they gain both bonuses?
Wukau's ability is played once and takes place immediately. The bonuses are conferred on any followers in the targeted unit immediately upon the use of Wukau. "until Wukau leaves play or he uses this ability again," is the duration of how long those bonuses last for.
If followers join that unit later, they are not affected by Wukau's ability, as it has already been played and applied - nor do followers that leave the unit suddenly lose their bonuses.
Rules question: Draw duels
What if Doji Domotai is in a duel and both sides focused a Kharmic strike. Would she first turn the duel into a win, then the 2nd kharmic would turn it into a draw so she would lose?
Kharmic Strike effects can and will be applied simultaneously without conflict. They change the parameters of determining the winner of a duel. The result upon resolution is "tie" regardless of stat-totals. Domotai's trait will cause her to win this artificially created tie no matter how many Kharmic Strikes were played to achieve that result.
What if both sides focused a rend the soul? And would it matter if the Domotai player focused both Rend?
Rend the Soul is a slightly different case. You calculate totals and determine the winner and loser. Remember, Domotai's effect only kicks in when there is a tie, and Rend the Soul's effect only kicks in when there is a win by the personality who focused it. Apply each effect only one time per given duel result.
Ergo, if Domotai focuses "Rend the Soul," the following can happen:
Domotai loses by Stats Domotai wins by Stats -> Domotai ties by Rend -> Domotai wins by Trait Domotai ties by Stats -> Domotai wins by Trait -> Domotai ties by Rend
If both sides focus "Rend the Soul," you just add another step in front of the last event chain:
Domotai loses by Stats -> Domotai ties by opposing Rend -> Domotai wins by Trait -> Domotai ties by her own Rend.
Dawn of the Empire Legality
Dawn of the Empire will be legal for sanctioned tournament play on December 1st, 2004. Thanks!
Iuchiban Sensei question
If I bow a Goblin Wizard to use the Kiho Playing with Madness, may I use Iuchiban Sensei to straighten the peep?
Is a Maho Action considered performed before or after it resolves? In other words, does the Goblin Wizard become a Bloodspeaker in time to use the Sensei's Reaction?
"After taking / casting / playing / performing" all normally happen as soon as the Action is considered a successful play, with is after all Costs are paid and Reactions to such payment are made, but before the Action produces any effects, including the effect of making your card a Bloodspeaker Personality.
No Dice.
That should cover everything not involved with Dawn of the Empire for Thursday, September 9, 2004. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your distinct and clear subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
