Your Rules for Friday September 3, 2004

Question<Marty

If I switch the force and chi of a berserker who is an a battle, say he is 7F 3C (+2)F so he is 9F 3C does the tenshu recalucalte after the switch there for making him a 5F 9C peep?

One thing to keep in mind about L5R - to "switch" values of stats really means to give the higher stat a penalty equal to the difference between the two stat's current values, and to give the lower stat a bonus on the same amount.

A Berserker who is currently 9F, 3C who gets his Force and Chi "switched" received a -6F penalty and a +6C bonus. Nothing more and nothing less.

The bonus from Tenshu Sensei is not "recalculated" because it was already factored in to the current value when these new penalties and bonuses were applied.

Should the Berserker later lose the bonus from Tenshu Sensei (+2F), his current Force will be 1 (7 printed, on-going -6 penalty from the "switch" effect = 1F).

Rules: Illegal actions becoming legal and resolving anyway

Kuro's Fire was ruled that there is an infinite amount of RA strength you can target, just so long as there are sufficient traits in play to retroactively change the RAs to legal strengths.

My question: Is this a ruling unique to Kuro's Fire, or can ANY illegal action be declared so long as there are non-optional traits in play that would make the action legal?

Yes. You take all mandatory, known modifying effects into account in determining whether an action is legal. That is the very essence of the "Smart Cards" rule.

example: bowing NPOTM to attach Shinsei's legion to a cav perp. The follower must gain the cav trait; satisfying the higher gold production clause for the stronghold. Why could you not declare that you'll bow to pay 7 for a cav follower, and attach this infantry follower, that will become cavalry at resolution?

Different issue entirely. You didn't declare an illegal action. You declared a legal one and then didn't pay for it. It doesn't matter that Shinsei's Legion is going to become Cavalry after it enters play. At all times during the "pay costs" step, it cost 7 and you only produced 5. It doesn't enter play until you produce 7.

Armor of Earth & Gunsen of Water vs. Katana of Fire

Since Armor of Earth and Gunsen of Water have the errata that eliminates the cost reduction when having the corresponding Ring in play, does Katana of Fire have that errata as well?

No, but Mempo of the Void does. These Errata were only issued for the Elemental Items that were in the Diamond Format, due to their impact on that environment. Since the Katana of Fire and Yari of Air were not in the format, they didn't earn themselves any Errata.

Jigoku-sensei

Could you clarify what happen to a personality discarded to Jigoku-sensei ? Is that personality considered a dead personality or not ?

Not. They are not destroyed and they don't die. They aren't any sort of Dead, so you can't use any cards keying off of Death, Destruction, or being Dead to get around the cost of using Jigoku Sensei.

Rules for 28 August 2004 [RULES]

QUESTION - After looking at rules/rulings on the Master of Five [see below], I'm curious if the event is now intended to provide an alternate win condition for any player who can:

A) Produce 1 action with the Earth, Air, Fire, Water, & Void traits (ie. Fire and Air's Elemental Action cast by a Master of X with 2 Inkyo's Jingasa's on him).

OR

B) Produce from 1 to 5 elemental actions with any combination of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, & Void traits among them (ie. Fire and Air's Elemental Action; Inkyo's Jingasa on a Master of X with an Elemental Action, also Fire and Water's Elemental Action in one phase).

You can win by bowing Naka Tokei XP2 for his innate ability. You can win by casting Fire and Air, Look Into the Void, Castle of Water, and then Shifting Earth. It doesn't matter how many Actions you take, only that they come from cards with a combination of traits so that you get a full set of the 5 elements (Air / Wind, Earth, Fire, Void, and Water).

Show of good faith + the legions charge

Lets say that on my opponent's action phase my opponent kills one of my personalities with kolat assasin and gets another one with Show of good faith and kill it too with bloodspeaker's altar.

Can i react at the end of the action phase with "The legions charge"?

No. That last Personality wasn't your card. You owned it, but you didn't control it. "Your cards," are cards you control, not own.

If cards care about the owner of the card, they will mention the word "own" or "owner." The Legions Charge does not mention anything about ownership. It cares only about control. The Personality was under your opponent's control when he died, so he doesn't count as one of your cards.

Rules - Summon Earth Kami

Would I be right in thinking that to use this spell to create a personality in your opponents army the caster must be assigned to a province during the attack phase?

No. Creating a card or token at the Battle is enough to fulfill Relevance. However, creating a unit under your opponent's control won't fulfill your requirement for Presence. You'll need to at least have Koto on your side of the Battle to get away with creating a Personality in the enemy army.

Ranged Attacks from Items and Shinjo Xushen non-exp.

Essentially: Does using an Item attatched to a personality to perform a Ranged Attack count as the Personality performing the Ranged Attack like a Spell? Can Shinjo Xushen (non-exp.) with a Daikyu do any or all of the following when assigned as infantry?

1. Bow the Daikyu for a Ranged 4 Attack. 2. Bow the Daiky and himself for a combined Ranged 7 or 8 Attack?

My thoughts are that they are not performed by the personality, but soley by the Item, I just want confirmation. Thanks.

Keep in mind that "from" and "performed by" are not the same thing. Actions are "from" the card with the Action, regardless of who performs them.

As for who does the Performing, look at criteria #2 on page 71 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook: "Actions on an Item, Spell, or Ancestor are performed by its Personality."

Xushen performs the Actions of his attached Items. Any Ranged Attacks from Xushen's items benefit from his trait.

As for combining Ranged Attacks, the only care where the Ranged Attack is from, not who performs it. Since Daikyu is a different card than Xushen, they can be combined. Since Daikyu doesn't require you to bow Xushen, you can pay all the costs. That means you can bow them both for a combined Ranged 6 attack, or 8 if Xushen assigned as Infantry.

That looks like everything not related to Dawn of the Empire for Friday. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your clear and distinct Subject Line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
