Rules for 18-21 August 2004

Martin Lund, sent 29 August 2004 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

OK, now that everyone's back from GenCon and business has picked up, I'm going to grab some straggler posts from the duldrom week. I'm going to start answering Wrath of the Emperor questions, but as a caveat, I'll disclaim that I'm going by online databases, not the cards in front of me. I don't have a reference set of Wrath yet.

Anyway, on with the show, starting from August 18th ending in August 21st.

Rock Men and Yodin Sensei

You seemed to miss this one the first time around Marty.

Cheers.

[MARTY] Ah. I saw the subject line and just assumed Rock Men was some funky card from Wrath I'd never heard of.

Open question.

I have one personality in play, Tamori Minoru and he has a Summon Earth Kami attached. I am also playing Yodin Sensei and my opponent has one personality in play.

He attacks and I create a rock man in his army using Summon Earth Kami. Am I right in assuming that he cannot bring any more personalities into play as he has the most personalities during his dynasty phase (this would also work if I had an extra personality as he has two during his dynasty phase) and has already bought a personality into play?

As he controls the rockman he is considered to have bought it into play correct?

No. The player who used the effect that brought the card into play is considered to have brought it into play. This is what Jeff ruled on Feign Death recently, and it applies here too.

Suitengu's Uncertainty

I have been looking at Suitengu's Uncertainty today to try and figure out if I can use it to send my personalities to adjacent battles instead of sending them home after the battle.

No. Suitengu's only looks for Movement, as clarified by Jeff in his email "rules for 1 March 2004"

Check it out on Deathseeker: http://www.deathseeker.com/email/2004/03/02/150215.shtml

Moving

followers/items/spells

As I've mentioned before, I've just recently come back into the game and I was reading through the DE rulebook. Nowhere could I find any rules on moving items, followers or spells between personalities as they used to be before.

You want to check out page 77 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook. It shows you the 3 basic Rulebook Actions specific to your Action Phase, including moving attached cards between units.

Update may be needeed

In the archive you can find this :

Imperial Favor If a card is used to pay the cost of an Imperial Favor effect (e.g., Acquiring Favor), it is considered a use of the Favor in all ways. [VRD, 28 December 2001]

In all respect, this should be applicable to Kyuden Bayushi, BUT a stronghold is not a card.

So do you plan to update the ruling OR does Kyuden Bayushi creates an exception ?

That would be Zen's department. It does seem to need an update. I guess I could sick so Yasuki Taskmasters on him or something, but I think they'd just take his side, being Crabs and all.

iuchiban sensei

Can shadowlands use Iuchiban sensei since a sense modifies your stronghold the -2 honor would be a modification not a gain or a loss so the stronghold wont stop it the loss and would loss as soon as the game begin.

Yes, they can use it. No, it wouldn't put them below -19. They cheat that way.

is a bonus/penalty a gain/loss

Not all gains and losses are bonuses. For instance, gaining 5 Honor or losing 7 Honor are not considered to be bonuses or penalties to your Family Honor.

In regards to Provinces and Card and Tokens, however, the terms of pretty close to synonymous. Do you have a specific example I could address?

i thought i saw a rule that said you either have a wind or a sensei can any one confirm this or was it jsut a rummer i picked up?

There is a specific Sensei Card (Gozoku Sensei) that says you can't have a Wind if you use it as your Sensei. Normally, you can have both a Sensei and a Wind.

Yajinden/Asako Tsuruko

In theory, I should be able to use Yajinden's ability to make a personality lose 3 Chi correct?

No. Read Yajinden's ability again. He's tricky.

"before one of your Personalities loses Chi due to a Maho effect"

Effects and Costs are different beasts. The -2C from Tsukuro is a Cost, not an Effect. Yajinden can't do anything about it.

Assigning, Moving and...

When units are relocated due to a fight ending (with or without resolution) they are doing what?

Well, they aren't Assigning and they aren't Moving. I don't think we have a term for what happens to them yet. That's a Design Team issue, I suppose.

Keeper of Air Etc and Daigotsu Dojo

For Keeper of Air & Co., the card reads to return "all rings to their owners hands TO get a ring." Can this be done if there are no rings in play?

Yes. If you have 0 Rings, then 0 = All your Rings.

Several Shadowlands cards say "Produces x Gold for a Shadowlands card." Can this be used to pay for abilities that produce or get shadowlands cards (i.e. Daigotsu Dojo and Jigoku Sensei). I can see it either way so I am asking.

No. Producing "for an X card" only produces to pay the costs of a card that is of type X. Gold paid to the ability of Farmlands, for example, is not gold paid "for a Follower card," even though the ability in question makes a Follower. Jigoku Sensei is not a Shadowlands Card either.

Overwhelmed + Balance in Nothingness

My opponent tries to Overwhelm me. Can I choose to send two units home, and since I'll choose the bowed person, cancel it using Balance in Nothingness?

Sure. You can freely make a valid decision, then modify its terms or cancel it with optional Reactions.

WoE rulebook change to tokens

Unless I missed something, a Weapon token is an Item that is attached to a personality, not something like a Spirit, Poison, Aura, Fire or unnamed (eg -1 chi) token, that is not attached but is a permenant change that goes away if they hit the discard pile :)

"Weapon" is a trait, not a card type. Just because it should always logically appear on an item does not mean that everyone it appears on is an item by default. If you manage to make a Weapon Token somehow that is not specifically a Weapon Item Token, then it is not an Item Card.

OK, that's everything from 18 - 21 of August.

I'll get up to the next batch ASAP. If I missed your question, please repost it, and remember to have [RULES] as a flag in your concise and clear subject line. I'll get to it at the first opportunity.
