Rules for 14 - 17 August 2004

Martin Lund, sent 18 August 2004 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi again,

It is pre-GenCon time and things are getting a little crazy. The volume online for questions dropped off a bit, so I'm going to do some batch-processing to better adjust the email-to-questions ratio of these posts. I'm still not answering Wrath of the Emperor questions until I get a set in front of me, so you'll have to wait for Jeff to return to get those answers.

Your Rules for Saturday, August 14 through Tuesday, August 17

Timing on Calculate Strength and Shosuro Technique

I win a duel. My opponent plays Calculate Strength and curses my duelist. Now, if I start another duel, and play Shosuro Technique, does my Chi get raised to my opponents normal Chi, or to Chi+3?

Shosuro Technique gets played "when you enter a duel," and by that timing, you'd be opposing the Personality and have triggered the +3 bonus. The on-going trigger effect (+3 to a stat) would happen before you have to choose to pay your Reaction, so you can play Shosuro Technique to raise your Chi to the post-bonus (chi + 3) figure of the other Personality.

Musume Mura costs/effects

Musume Mura (Region)

Limited: Bow Musume Mura to discard a card from one of your Provinces and fill it face-up with a discarded (not dead) Personalitiy from your discard pile.

Can this action be used on an empty province? The wording seems to imply that only the bowing is the cost, 'to' instead of 'and'. Can one of the effects happen without the other?

Unlike Morning Glory Castle, Musume Mura does not explicitly say it targets the Province. Thus it targets the card in the Province that you choose to discard (as well as the discarded Personality) instead of the Province itself, and you cannot use it without actually choosing both such targets.

Forgotten Tomb

If I shove a Shadowlands personality under the Forgotten Tomb, do I have to meet the honor requirement when I bring him into play using the Forgotten Tomb's trait?

"Honor requirements must still be met. [JA, 6 June 2002]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Forgotten Tomb")

Quick Questioin on Traits

I understand via the rulebook that an action on a personality with the Ninja trait is a "ninja" action, but when a personality is a Courtier is their action considered "Political"?

No. An Action printed on a card with the Courtier Trait is a Courtier Action. Actions take the traits of the cards they are printed on - so Actions on Samurai are Samurai Actions, and on Monks are Monk Actions, etc.

Kolat Recruiter

Marty, I posted a question on the 10th of August asking for a review of the Honor Requirements for Kolat recruiter. Could you pass this on to the Rules Junta? (I expect that this request is too late to impact GenCon, but I don't Kolat Recruiter being viable until Tishi Sensei anyway).

The ruling stands. An Honor Requirement is a restriction. Kolat Recruiter says restrictions must be met.

That covers everything from the 14th to the 17th. If I missed your non-Wrath question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
