Rules for 11 - 13 August 2004

Martin Lund, sent 18 August 2004 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hey folks,

It is pre-GenCon time and things are getting a little crazy. The volume online for questions dropped off a bit, so I'm going to do some batch-processing to better adjust the email-to-questions ratio of these posts. I'm still not answering Wrath of the Emperor questions until I get a set in front of me, so you'll have to wait for Jeff to return to get those answers.

Your Rules for Wednesday, August 11 through Friday, August 13

In Search of the Future / Togashi Jusai

Question: does In Search of the Future lower force bonuses from Togashi Jusai's Fire tokens to 0?

Fire Tokens are not cards. The bonus from them is not a bonus from a card. Ergo, they are not immune to the effects of the MRP of In Search of the Future. Jusai will have each bonus from each Fire Token reduced to 0.

This is already addressed in the L5R FAQ at http://l5r.alderac.com/ccg/faq.html "Focus on ... In Search of the Future"

Daizu+Show+Loyalty

Is Daizu's trait limited to once per game or is it limited to once per game per player?

"Once per game," does not care who controls the source of the effect unless you have other explicit text to that effect. Plain old, "Once per game - do something" can only be used once per game, regardless of who uses it.

(no subject)

Just curious question..the swords assigned to each clan, is it usable any personality, or just samurai, bushi?

Unless an item specifically says that it can only attach to Samurai or Bushi, any item can attach to any Personality that may attach items. Weapons or swords are not implicitly "Samurai only" or anything like that.

Rules for 10 August 2004

My opponent casts Flee the Darkness [don't ask me why]. The action is canceled, so it didn't happen, so I can do it again.

You can't Flee Toshiji's action. Flee only works with the opponent chooses one of your Personalities as a target. Toshiji forces YOU to choose one of your people to bow.

Let's just pretend like he said his opponent drops faith in my clan, just so that the idea behind his question comes across.

That's a different kettle of fish regarding timing of cost-abilities and such, then. Still, it doesn't matter at the core of the discussion.

Going on Castle of the Wasp for precedent is a messy business. I'm hoping we can clean out that ruling post-GenCon, because right now it is just a Designer Intent hold-over to keep its play consistent.

I'm going to draw a line in the sand with City of Remembrance. You can't use its trait more than once in a turn, even if the Action you were using the Trait to waive the cost of gets Canceled. The trait was still used and still produced an effect - not just the cost-waiving but the "Can not use innate abilities against this turn," effect.

So, no, you can't use the trait on City of Remembrance again if the first Action you used it on got Canceled.

Reaction Rules

I have a Diplomatic Apprentice and Goshiu no Shiryo on J. Random Scorpion. I bow Scorpion guy and target somebody with Goshiu. I then bow Apprentice and target the same person with Goshiu.

So now I effectively have two Goshiu no Shiryo's targetting the same personality. I bow targetted personality with something (we'll say Bonds of Fate).

Now, say I have a Soshi Tabito in play during all this. Can I use the reaction once per honor loss, or once per bowing. I believe it's once per honor loss, but I could be wrong - wouldn't be the first time.

Each use of Goshiu no Shiryo is an individual Action with its own individual effects. When the victim bows he'll create X two-point Honor Losses where X is the number of Goshiu Actions targeting the victim. With Tabito, you could consequently gain 1 honor for each of these X losses.

That covers everything from the 11th to the 13th. If I missed your non-Wrath question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
