Your Rules for Saturday, July 10, 2004

A *Moneylender* with no tokens on it is still considered a "gold-producing holding" for the purposes of cards like *Crystal Mine* and *Barren Fields*,

Yes. 0 Gold is still gold production for the game's purposes.

Can *Castle of the Wasp*'s trait allowing a ranged attack to be performed without bowing be used to allow a bowed personality to perform a ranged attack that is printed on that personaliy, despite the rule prohibiting actions printed on bowed cards from being used unless the card says otherwise?

No. You can't use the abilities of cards or strongholds that are bowed, even if the ability itself can be used without bowing the card or stronghold. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 54)

Jeff RULE QUESTION FOR WRATH SINGULAR TRAIT

If a personality card is singular card can I copy it with the EGG OF PAN KU?

I don't see why not. You bring the Egg of P'an Ku into play first. THEN it becomes a copy of the card in question. The Rulebook doesn't say anything about Singular other than the fact that you can't a second of the same card with the Singular trait into play when you already control one. You aren't breaking that rule. You've side-stepped the issue entirely.

Yogo Asami and Turn of Fortune

My buddy uses a Yogo Asami from home. Since my shugenja is the only unbowed personality in play, she would bow.

Can I turn of fortune to a bowed samurai outside the battle? I meet relevance, since Turn of Fortune targets the shugenja in the battle.

The Rules of Relevance does not apply to Reactions.

At any rate, you can't do it against Shosuro Maru, the Diamond Legal personality. She specifically requires the targeting of an UNBOWED personality, and you can not redirect an Action to a target it could not legally be targeted against in the first place.

Asami has less specific wording, but it works out to the same thing. You can only choose an unbowed Personality if you have any unbowed Personalities (as per the rules in the Archive under "decisions"). The other Personalities are not valid targets so long as you control at least one unbowed Personality.

Wanton Destruction and Feign Death

So, considering the recent ruling about things becoming illegal targets in the middle of actions: If I target one of my personalities with Wanton Destruction and two opposing personalities, and I subsequently lose the first duel and play Feign Death on my personality, does my personality get -4F and issue the second duel?

Yes, strangely enough, even though he's no longer opposing anyone. All that targeting was kosher all the way up until you ended the first duel, so the effects will still go through, regardless of targeting legality, if they are physically possible. Since both duelists are alive for the challenge, they can go at it.

Odd question.

I am playing Kyuden Agasha. My opponent is a Shadowlands player. I attach Purity of the 7 Thunders as an Open on my opponents turn, to Agasha Seruma. He is not worried, since he is about to attack my last province, and has more than enough force to take it. I then play Plans Within Plans. My opponent realizes what is in store for him, so he Ambushes the Agasha Seruma. As my first action, may I cast the Purity with the Seruma [2Chi] and Agasha Chieh Exp with the Sword [14 Chi]? Chieh says she moves into battles to cast spells, so would she be able to help Seruma, or am I a goner?

Chieh doesn't move. She just - IS THERE - when she casts a spell. She is not the Primary Shugenja, thusly is not considered to be casting the Spell. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 90) Therefore, she is not at the battle, and can not support Seruma in her Ritual.

You're out of luck, my friend. He's hoping there isn't enough left of your remains to make a decent zombie.

Also, what if Agasha Chieh has Emergence of the 5 Masters attached, and is at home. I have 2 Shugenja at the battle, and 3 others at home. When Chieh casts Emergence, how many of the Shugenja can assist her?

Chieh can't be in two places at once. While casting at a battle via her trait, she is not considered to be in your home. Only Shugenja in the same battle can participate in a Ritual she is casting there, as per page 90 of the Rulebook.

question about Ring

If I happen to have more than one Ring of the Void in my hand, if I show it 3 times, do I put one or more in play?

When a card refers to itself by name, it is considered to be self-referential text. It means "this card," regardless of the name of the card with the ability. So if you copy an ability to a card with a different name, it the copy-ability refers to the copying card, not the original

At any rate, each Ring is self-referential. You can only play the one you revealed those 3 times.

OK, that's more like it. That should take care of all the questions from Saturday, and they were all Blessings of Isawa Free. If I missed you question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] in a clear and distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.

Thanks folks,
