Rules for 5 July 2004
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Your Rules for Monday, July 5, 2004
First of all, a little update for people concerned with the implications of the recent "actions that make you take other actions" rule (related to Rage and Control the Field. This does count as gaining an additional Action. It WILL be prohibited by your Lotus At Dusk.
Latomu and Shinjo Horsebow
Is activating the second ability on the Shinjo Horsebow the personality performing the action or the bow performing the action?
"2. Actions on an Item, Spell, or Ancestor are performed by its Personality." (Diamond Edition Rulebook, pg 71)
For example, can I (presuming Moto Latomu has a Shinjo Horsebow)...
None of the examples will work. You can't use Shinjo Horsebow at the same time as Latomu. Latomu's Ranged Attack is part of a Reaction, while Shinjo Horsebow only produces Ranged Attacks as a Battle Action.
"The combined actions' types must all be the same, and the cards must all be able to make a ranged attack at that time and at the intended target." (Diamond Edition Rulebook, pg 90, "Making Ranged Attacks")
In Search vs Woodlands
Ok, then... Would In Search be efficient against Woodlans' bonuses ?
It will reduce all the bonuses granted by Woodlands to personalities at that battle to 0 at the time of playing the In Search of the Future, certainly.
And, Whatever, how would In Search interact with permanently recalculated bonuses (such as SL-stronghold, Woodlands (I believe) and so on?)
In most cases, In Search of the Future's effect will expire before the bonuses are reapplied. Bonuses from traits don't get "reapplied" unless the condition for receiving them becomes false or ceases to be, and then consequently everything becomes Kosher again.
For instance, the way you could get the Spawning Grounds bonus to be "reapplied" would be to strip and subsequently restore the Oni, Ogre, or Troll trait from one of your Personalities, or use Amnesia on Spawning Grounds and then wait for the spell to wear off.
Woodlands is a little bit easier, though, since you only have the bonus "while at this battle." You could simply leave the battle and reenter it to get the bonus "reapplied." Technically, it is a new bonus every time.
Values
Hi Marty,
Hi.
has AEG a special definition of "values"?
Must. Resist. Urge. To make. "Values"jokes ...
I'd say they mean the number values of the various card, player, and province stats in the game: Force, Chi, Honor Requirement, Gold Cost, Personal Honor, Family Honor, Focus Value, and Province Strength.
There are cards that distinctly break this rule, however, like Black Steel Blade (which has a "chi value" of -2).
encircled terrain
I just wanted to make sure. Except for the two units, which are targeted by respective players, other units are not targeted, right?
I can't see any reason in the rulebook that they would be targeted.
Kyuden Hitomi and Drawing
If you are drawing 2 cards in your End Phase via Doom of the Dark Lord and you activate Kyuden Hitomi's ability do you draw one card from under Kyuden Hitomi and another from your fate deck or just the one from Kyuden Hitomi and nothing else?
Using Kyduen Hitomi replaces the drawing of - a - card, not all cards drawn during the End Phase.
Lots of Questions
Scenario:
Goblin Wizard in fief, Ratling Raider in the current battle.
Can You? Announce Casting of Jinkoku's Rage Bow Bloodspeakers Sanctum to allow the Ratling Raiders to cast the Kiho, giving it the Bloodspeaker trait Target Ratling Raider (now a valid target) with Jinkoku's Rage Bow Goblin Wizard to cast Kiho
Yes. Announce the Jigoku's Rage. React to "before" it by using the Sanctum to make the Ratling Raider a legal caster. Use any legal caster to cast Jigoku's Rage - in this case, Goblin Wizard.
If I play Ray of Hope after Feign Death can I target the Feign'ed personaltiy?
Of course you can. Feign Death will have fully resolved before you can take the next Reaction to the same trigger (the death of the Personality). Once Feign Death has resolved, the Personality is a perfectly valid target for Ray of Hope.
I announce that I'm going to play the kiho [Playing with Madness] Bow Bloodspeakers Sanctum to allow Kinuye to cast the kiho as if she was a shugenja.
Are any kihos cast after this action by Kinuye eligiable to gain the maho trait since Kinuye will no longer be a shugenja?
Whether or not she is a shugenja after Playing With Madness is resolved is irrelevent. The effects of gaining +2/+2, Bloodspeaker, Shadowlands, and the Kiho = Maho are all permanent effects with no other conditions or durations attached to them.
If a honorable personality with 0 chi is returned to play using feign death, are they returned to the honorable or dishnonorable dead pile.
There is only one pile, the Discard Pile. Your status as Honorable or Dishonorable dead is determined exactly like being an Honorable or Dishonored Personality in play. You're Personality will die honorably (no honor loss to you) if he re-enters play via Feign Death after being Honorable Dead with 0 Chi. However, Feign Death will Dishonor him even in the Discard Pile, changing his status after death from Honorable to Dishonorable.
If I play feign death on an opposing players personality, who is considered to be bringing the card into play?
The player who will control the Personality returning to play - in this case the opposing player.
Who inccurs the entering play effects (if any)?
The player bringing the Personality into play - in this case the opposing player.
In the case of a House of Tao player, if I feigned their Egg of P'an Ku that targetted one of my shadowlands personaltities, are all of their rings removed from the game?
You'd better believe it. That's what they get for making tainted clones.
Open: Once per turn, discard a Fate card to take Seeds of the Void into your hand. You may also use this action if Seeds of the Void is in your discard pile.
Can the action be used to retrieve it from your deck?
No. Unless otherwise permitted or required by text (like on the bottom line) you can only use the ability of a non-Action card while the card is in play, under your control.
Who is considered the 'owner' of Summon Earth Kami tokens, the player you cast the spell, or the player who controls the token.
That has to be determined arbitrarily, I suppose. That's Jeff's department. I'll ask him and get a reply back to you. It can impact the use of Loyalty Renewed against Enlightenment.
Can a personality that needs not bow for to cast a kiho, cast that kiho when bowed? (ie a personality with Takao's Jingasa)
So long as the Kiho itself does not specify that you need target an unbowed caster, you're fine.
Does 'raise the bonus' create a seperate force bonus?
No. Never. Increasing or decreasing an existing bonus or penalty does not create a new bonus or penalty.
Importune Kami Ritual Limited: Bow this Shugenja and any number of your other Shugenja to raise the strength of each of your Provinces by three times the number of Shugenja bowed until the beginning of your next turn.
If a single shugenja uses Shinden Horiuchi's ability to cast this spell without bowing, does the +3 province strength occur considering the spell checks for BOWED shugenja?
By a completely literal reading, no. They only get +3 per Shugenja that bowed to pay the cost - not every Shugenja who participated in the ritual. If you waive the bowing cost for a Shugenja, that Shugenja won't count towards the number bowed.
That should cover everything from Monday. If I missed your question from this day, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of a clear and distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
