Failure of Duty

Here is what I do. I use Maru, they bow... Asako Henry. I ambush Asako Henry with Bayushi Tom. I target an unbowed Taneji and Asako Henry with Failure of Duty. He passes. I pass. My question is does the dishonoring happen at the point where both of us pass and we start with the resolution or does it happen when everything has been computed and the battle is over?

Do the dishonoring and drawing at the beginning of the Resolution Segment.

... that almost didn't make sense to me. More directly, will Asako Henry die a horrible dishonorable death in battle, or will he die a horrible death and then become dishonored in his owner's discard pile?

He'll be dishonored, and then die. That's the fate of those who fail in their duty. Their end comes without honor.

More scorpion questions

When I use the second ability on Shosuro Mikado, do I shuffle the deck after I look? If not, do I put the cards back in their original order or an order of my chosing?

Looking at the top cards of a deck does not constitute an implicit instruction to change their order in any way, nor shuffle the deck.

Say I play a Dismissed, then I want to use Mikado's first ability and draw a card and I also want to use my stronghold's ability and shuffle the card back in. Which goes off first or do I get to chose i.e. could I chose to shuffle it in with my stronghold's reaction, then use Mikado's reaction and draw a card?

You can play both abilities at the same time - after playing the card. You choose which one to play first, and then the option to take a Reaction passes left. When it passes back to you, you may play your second Reaction.

Otomo Taneji has 2 Kuroiban Advisors attached to him. He issues a Storm Heart challenge to a dishonored Akodo Ieshige (or any bloodspeaker with chi < 5). When the duel begins, I bow both advisors to give Ieshige -4C and kill him. Is it correct to say that Taneji will not be dishonored because the duel ended without resolution?

Yes, the duel does not have two participants, and thusly can not determine a winner or loser to affect in any way.

If I Ambush someone, hit them with a Failure of Duty, bow them out, but end up bowing out as well, will their personality still die a horrible dishonorable death, or will the honor gain from tieing the battle rehonor the guy before he dies?

The honor gains come AFTER the destruction of the Personalities. He'll still die a dishonorable death, but then the honor gain afterwards for his controller will be negated and he'll be restored to Honorable Status and be Honorable Dead.

Rules Question - [L5R-CCG] Set'tch'foo question.

Was there ever a ruling on this?

Yes. I ruled that she needs to be in the battle.

Ambush(RULES)

1) Ambush target action is a cost or not?

Targeting is not a cost of Ambush. You don't target with Ambush until after the effect of declaring the Attack Phase is completed. You must pick a legal target for each assignment if one exists.

2) Ambush target after the attack phase was declared, right? so the units that i target are now in a battle action segment?

No. You assign each one during either the Cavalry or Infantry Maneuvers Segments as with a normal battle, you just have to target them as per Ambush's text and it doesn't matter if the defending unit is bowed.

Ambush creates all the normal segments of the Attack Phase found in the Rulebook - Declaration, Infantry Maneuvers, Cavalry Maneuvers, Battle Action, and Resolution

3) Danjuro can redirect to himself the ambush if i target a shugenja in defend unit? if yes, why?

Danjuro was a legal target for Ambush at the time, so as per his card text, he redirects the targeting of the Action from the Shugenja to himself.

Scorpion questions 2

I put a couple of Diplomatic Apprentice on Shosuro Toson XP, and after this, a Goshiu no Shiryo

The next turn, I unbow all... and then:

I bow Toson, using Goshiu no Shiryo action, and target , for example, Agasha Chieh XP. Then, meanwhile Toson is bowed, each time Chieh bows, no matter how, my opponent loses 2 honor points.

I think I can bow Dip App instead Toson, because is a political action done by a courtier. Until Toson unbows, Chieh is "cursed" :P But the question is more difficult...

Sure, you can bow the Diplomatic Apprentice, but the effect's duration would immediately expire if Toson was not bowed.

First, note the standing Errata that affects Goshiu's ability:

'All text saying, "until this card straightens" should read "while this card stays bowed." [JA, 21 May 2003]' (Accumulated Rulings, "Bowing")

Diplomatic Apprentice only replaces Toson bowing in paying the cost. It does not count as "Goshiu's Personality" when you check to see that Goshiu's Personality is still bowed.

If I have 2 DipApp, can I bow Toson, and then the two followers to produce 3 effects that cause an honor loss of two on the same personality, or 3 different ones?

Yes you can. That's pretty awful.

And, more awful again... when my next turn starts, I can decide no to unbow Toson, but the 2 DA unbows... the effects that I cause in my previous turn are still active? First turn, if Chieh bows, loses 2+2+2 for a total of 6 points. In my new turn... still remain that 6 points, and I can use the 2 DP for increase the effect to 6+2+2 = 10?

Um ... yuck ... yeah ... I don't see anything in the rules stopping this little reign of terror ...

question about target

Just a quick question. On cards like Dirty Politics, when it says another player, could you use it on any player or just an opponent or ally? Thanks in advance.

[MARTY] Any player who isn't you.

Farmlands

Is Farmlands considered a "Farm" for the purpose of Simple Huts?

No. "Farmlands" is all one word. You can't break it apart into "Farm" and "lands"

OK, that looks like everything from Wednesday, May 6, 2004 that wasn't handled in-thread. If I missed your question from this day, please repost it with the flag [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
