Question
Can Shosuru Maru Target a player who has 1.no peeps 2. all bowed peeps for purposes of Whispers?
Sure. Maru only requires you to have a legal target of another player. The fact that her effect requires someone else to target something they can't target doesn't impact the legality of you taking the Action. Only if YOU can't target something you are required to target is your Action illegal.
Turn of Fortu
Just wondering, does Turn of Fortune allow you to redirect an action to an illegal target?
No. Page 74 of the Diamond Edition has the last paragraph of "Targeting and Redirection." It is kind of orphaned from the rest of the topic because you have to turn the page to get there and it is the only text from that section, so people tend to skip it. Common thing that happens with Web Page or email content when it is below the point you can see without scrolling down.
Anyway, that commonly overlooked section says this:
"You can redirect an action or effect only to something else it could have targeted originally."
Speed of the Plains
Elemental Air Battle: Once per turn, without bowing this Shugenja, immediately take two additional consecutive Battle and/or Open actions. If this Shugenja has the Air trait, you may use this action if this Shugenja is not in the current battle.
Does attaching the spell to an Air Shuggie let you ignore Presence, Relevance, or both? It doesn't specifically address either, but if it doesn't bypass at least one of them, the extra effect doesn't do anything.
That second clause is there to override the Rule of Relevance, which would normally require the Shugenja be in the battle to cast the Spell.
Tacticia
If a Lion Personality has the Tactician trait from Kenson Gakka, and then gains the real tactician trait thru other means during the battle, Moment of Brilliance, Akodo Minako with a formation in play ect., can that personality now gain force bonusesfrom their Tactician trait or does the Stronghold effect still apply?
I think I already answered this question today. Please folks, don't repost your questions until you check the digest for the day you actually posted your question. If that digest isn't out yet, don't repost until it does come out and you find your question has actually been missed.
Anyway, to rehash, both the Tactician Trait and restriction granted by Kenson Gakka go away if the Personality has Tactician from some other source like Moment of Brilliance, Fan of Command, or the Printed Tactician Trait after an effect that removes Tactician (Spyglass) wears off.
Isawa House
Guard/Resolution
Can the Isawa House Guard be used to prevent a shuggy from bowing during the resolution phase of the battle (whether the house guard is in the battle or not)? From reading the rules it's a little ambiguous as to *exactly* when the end of the battle occurs (during resolution, end of resolution, after resolution). In other words, what's the definitive marker for "end of the battle" after which no "during battle" triggers can occur?
Hm ... again with the reposting the question without waiting for the reply in the digest. As a rule, please wait until the day's digest marked for the day you asked the question before you repost it. If you are uncertain about time-zones, just go by the date listed in the Yahoo! groups archive called "L5R-CCG-archives".
I can't answer everything on the fly, folks, not while I'm volunteering to do this pro bono. Wife, 9-5 job, deck building, tournaments - you know the score.
Anyway, on to the answer -
You can't use the House Guard to prevent this kind of bowing. It says, "while in an army." Attacking and allied units "return to their controller's homes, bowed." They didn't bow while in an army. They went home bowed. When they are going home (the same time they are bowing), they are not part of any army.
Rules Question - The Outer Darkness
Shugenja A has The Outer Darkness attached and has bowed your Unit B. You are resolving a battle at one of your provinces as defender. Do you need someone in the battle to move Unit B in or does the fact that you will be moving a unit in give you presence?
Moving the unit into the battle qualifies as, "Gain a unit in the battle as an unconditional result of the action" (Diamond Edition Rulebook, pg 80)
Lotus at Dusk passing{Rules}
If I have lotus at dusk in play and pass my first action then play an action on my second opportunity does my tactician gain +2F, what if I reverse the order? If I pass both opportunities do I gain +2f and +2f?
You know, I'm not sure. I think there should be a hard-and-fast rule on whether or not extra opportunities to play any Open or Battle actions are just like the regular opportunity in the rulebook.
If they are, then you could pass. If they aren't, then they would be like Superior Strategist - you must play an Action as instructed, with no opportunity to pass.
I'd like to know what Jeff thinks on this, since the new set introduces a lot of extra action effects.
Forwarded to Jeff.
OK, that's everything that wasn't handled in-thread from 28 April 2004. If I missed your question from the 28th of April or dates prior, please repost your question with [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
