TERRAINS clarifications

QUESTION ABOUT TERRAINS:

Are terrains considered as BATTLE Action?

Terrains are Battle Action cards. Playing one by its own text is a Battle action.

If its True, therefore, it is legal to Cancel a Terrain(being played in a battle) by KYUDEN IKOMA or FAITH IN MY CLAN. Right?

Right.

Here's the scenario: We are resolving BATTLE1 and as a defender's first BATTLE ACTION, my opponent plays "COME ONE AT A TIME". I'm aiming to cancel the whole Terrain itself with my KYUDEN IKOMA's REACTION Ability since accdg. to what i've understand that Terrains are BATTLE ACTIONS to(so it's legal to cancel that with K.IKOMA).

Here's the question: 1. Does K.IKOMA cancels the whole Terrain Card? 2. Or K.IKOMA may only cancel the BATTLE ACTION granted by the card to "Issue a challenge"? If this one holds true then my opponent may play the BATTLE ACTION again that Issue a challenge leaving K.IKOMA's reaction useless. :) Thanks.

You may do both, actually. But as you point out, canceling the second is useless.

Card Effect Durations

'Got some questions regarding EFFECT DURATIONS...

Supposed we are resolving a current BATTLE ACTION SEGMENT.... BONUSES/PENALTIES that came from a BATTLE ACTION CARD or BATTLE ACTION ABILITIES are EFFECTS, right? Ok.

Anything a card or action does that isn't a cost is an effect, more or less.

Here's the question:

1. When will an effect produced by a BATTLE ACTION CARD(e.g. STRENGTH OF PURITY) lasts? This is a bonus from a BATTLE ACTION CARD that do not specify how long it will last ... until end of the battle? or until the end of the current turn?

End of the turn. [DE p. 70]

IF it'll last until end of turn THEN: -a 3PH Personality targeted by STRENGTH OF PURITY even when moved out in the current battle will still have the bonus of +3F/+3C until the turn ends. Any succeeding bonus are CUMMULATIVE even if this personality moves into a new battle being resolve(e.g. move in by T.ASSAULT) right?

All bonuses with a "+" or "-" sign or that say they are bonuses, pelanties, additional, or cumulative will stack.

Rules question: Boastful proclamation

Will Shrine in sun cancel a boastful proclamation if play[ed] between the event being turned up and resolving, and the effect of the person gaining the honour, for example by the opposing player in his turn?

Yes.

Egg Questions

Just a couple of cuestions

1.- When you copy a personality with an item, other than clan sword (Dai Tsuchi), using the egg of p'an ku, does the item also get copied? Meaning, if they copy my 4F Sozen with Dai Tsuchi, his copy will be a 4F Sozen or a 7F Sozen ?

Bonuses from Items are not permanent effects on the Personality. The Egg will not copy them. The new Sozen in this example will be 4F.

2.- When you copy a personality with a clan sword, the force bonus that the sword gives to the personality IS copied, right ?

No. The Celestial Swords do not work differently.

Kolat Assassin and Kurohito

I have a Kurohito Exp.2 in play., and a Kolat Assassin and Rethoric in my hand. My opponent is -16, and no other Personalities or Retainers are in play.

Could I play Kolat Assassin on Kurohito Exp.2?

Kolat Assassin targets "a Retainer" or "a Personality with under 5 Chi". [card text] Kurohito Exp.2 is neither. You can't play it on him.

Rules Questions

I have a couple of questions.

Can the abilites on the Castle of the Wasp be used while it is bowed?

They are not abilities because they do not begin with any of the game's four standard action keywords. These effects can be used while the Stronghold is bowed.

If a spell like Importune Kami or Essence of Gaki Do has already been cast and has a few other shugenja bowed in the ritual. I play Ryoshun' Last Words to destroy the spell, do the tokens go away or do they stay or with Importune Kami, does the increased province strength stay or go away?

Ryoshun's Last Words Kiho Open: Bow one of your Shugenja or Monks to destroy a Spell.

Destroying a card does not normally have any effect on the duration of effects that card has created.

rules for 8 March 2004

In a message dated 3/9/2004 10:49:04 AM Pacific Standard Time, writes: To kill Xushen, the shugenja must produce a ranged 6 attack, which is higher than his total of 5... but that is then reduced to 4, so it's legal. Does Kuro's Fire use the smart card clause to somehow realize that its illegally-large initial ranged attack will be reduced to a legal level once it feels the effects of the Xushen reduction?

Yes. I am lost. Jeff could you explain this in more detail. I don't see how a ranged 5 attack kills Xushen exp.. in this situation.

Easy. It's 5 *after* Xushen's strength reduction.

Consecutive Actions

Something has just occured to me with the handful of items available now (or will be) that attach during battle and do blah.

If a player using Kyuden Gotei bows a naval Card for two consecutive Battle actions, if the first is to attach, say the Blade of Thorns, does the subsequent Fear affect that follows mean that the player has made his two battle actions they bowed a Naval card for?

Blade of Thorns says to gain an additional Battle action [card text]. It really would be an extra action. It would not overlap the second one from Kyuden Gotei.

Question on Kyuden Hida

Hi All,

can the reaction ( draw an extra card) be used if the stronghold is bowed

No.

(keeping in mind that 1 - the stronghold is not a card although it is represented by one

Irrelevant. The rule against using actions on bowed cards explicitly mentions Strongholds as well. [DE p. 54]

2 - It is a react, not an action

Incorrect. Reactions are actions. [DE pp. 63, 74, 75, 98]

Ranged Attack Combining

Ok, the question recently came up, specifically in regard to Nobumoto

Say Nobumoto has a Jade yari attached and the following set of actions occur:

1. Nobumoto performs a ranged attack without bowing, and negates the movement that is sending him out of the battle. 2. Nobumoto uses the ranged attack on the Yari (for some reason) and bows himself to increase the attack by his three.

What happens? Does Nobumoto stay there and shoot, or shoot and go home?

To be more specific, the ruling archive states that when a ranged attack is combined, that it shares all traits (such as targeting vs chi). Does it share abilities as well? When combining ranged attacks, do all cards that are in the attack actually perform the action (and thus adding strength together), or do you just bow additional cards and add the strength of the ranged attack to what is already present by the use of one singular battle action?

All special effects of their ranged attack actions apply. Nobumoto goes home if he combines his attack with that of another card in his unit.

At the same time, if it was a combined use of multiple battle actions, would it assist in dropping the ring of water? (Would a range attack with 3 minor shugenja combined together to give you 4 battle actions to drop the ring?)

A combined ranged attack is one action.

Agasha Chieh Exp Question

Here goes:

I'm attacked by a player who has say 6 peeps one of which is Ashura. I block with Danjuro and leave Chieh at home. For my first action I go crazy with Chieh and Kuro's Fire for 20+ points. With one of my ranged attacks I kill Ashura who then targets and destroys Danjuro. I have some number (let's say 10) of points left to assign as ranged attack. Do I get to continue my action or is Chieh finished because I don't have presence?

Presence and Relevance are required to take the action, and Chieh only needs another unit there when she casts the Spell. Once that is done, its effects are set in motion. The rest of the Spell proceeds as normal.

Questions that came up...

So I'm asking cause I said I would.

The Mantis Bloodspeaker can kill almost any follower, because they have a Chi of 0, correct?

Correct.

If I have the Maw and Ki-Rin Shrine (non-XP) in play, and the Maw gets Force of Will'd, is he dead for 0 Chi, or 7 Chi and 7 PH?

Set Chi to old PH and PH to old Chi. Apply minimums (minimum Chi is now 7 of Force of Will was cast by someone else). The Maw lives at 7 Chi.

If I cast Written in Blood on a base 2 Chi personality with a Clan Sword, and then play Iaijutsu Lesson targeting them (and they accept, volutarily or otherwise) do they instantly die for being 0 Chi?

Yes.

When do we get some 0 HR shugenja followers for Shadowlands Bloodspeakers to use?

As soon as we can figure out a way to print such a thing that won't both cause Phoenix players to complain about other factions getting more support for Shugenja than they are, and cause non-Phoenix players to complain about getting cards that don't help their one most competitive current deck type. Sometime around 2010, I think.

Timing/Duration

I am sure this was covered earlier, but I can't find the ruling.

If my enemy has a 3C (Samurai) personality and play Wounded in Battle, and then a Bloodstrike or something... does he die after the resolution of this battle.

The answer is in the MRP of Wounded in Battle.

"Battle: Give a Personality in this battle -2C. If the Personality is a Samurai, he does not die from having 0 Chi during this battle."

The samurai is totally protected from dying due to having 0 Chi for the entire rest of the battle. When the battle ends, so does this protection. If his Chi is 0 then (or later), he dies.

And for that matter, how long do effects like Wounded in Battle, Uncertainty etc. last?

Until the turn ends unless specified otherwise on the card.

Yumi of Fire

I have a silly question. IIRC It was ruled that the Blade of Thorns could only use the Battle: Fear 3 ability once; when it was brought into play as a battle action. If this is true doesn't that mean that the Yumi of Fire could only use its consecutive Ranged Attacks once and only if it was brought into play as a Battle action? If the Blade of Thorns wasn't ruled this way then please let me know. Thanks in advance.

The Blade of Thorns was not ruled that way. Both these Items' actions can also be used in the normal fashion.

Rules questions

This came up at a tournament recently and I'd like someone to clear this up. Crab was attacking Phoenix with Hida Sozen. Agasha Cheih XP, who was outside the battle, had Kuro's Fire, Isawa House Guard and more force in its unit than Sozen's. If Cheih cast Kuro's Fire, could it kill Sozen? A few questions arose from this. Is Cheih, although in the army, considered opposed to Sozen?

Only while casting it.

Does bowing to cast the spell (thus lowering her units force below Sozen's) prevent Sozen's death, or does the reaction on the House Guard unbow her before the spell effects happen? Thanks for the clarification!

Isawa House Guard straightens her immediately after she bows [card text], so she is straight again before any ranged attack effect happen.

Here's another one: We celebrate a Chrysanthemum Festival and gain another province. Can Heimen Laborers be used to fill that new province face up, or not, since the laborers can only be used when "refilling" a province, and the province has never had anything in it to begin with. (Now that's a semantic splitting of hairs!)

It may be used.

HC Preview: Iuchi Katamari

Does this work:

Your opponent has a 3/3 personality and attaches some random 3/3 item. You normally use overconfidence to bow this personality, but you dont have overconfidence at the time. Later you draw it and you have Katamari on the table. Does the switching of the bonus, even identical, count as a new force bonus to which overconfidence can react.

No. Overconfidence is used when a bonus begins. [card text] Changing a bonus is not the same as creating one.

Additionally, the switch only lasts until end of turn. So at the end of turn when it switches back, can you react with overconfidence to that?

Again, no.

Question reggarding Hitomi Daisetsu.

If Hitomi Daisetsu bows to cast a Flee the Darkness and the other player uses Fall on Your Knees. Daisetsu can still use his reaction to straighten?

Yes.

I think he can since his reaction is "...after Daisetsu bows to cast a Kiho..." even if he bowed to cast a kiho and the kiho was canceled he still bowed for that right?

Correct.

Daidoji Kikaze....

So how this guy works? U can issue challenges? or only action that are not opposing?

He does not work like Chieh. Kikaze only lets you break the Rule of Presence -- the rule that says you have to have a unit in the current battle already, or be using an action that will give you one, to legally use a Battle or Open action. None of your units are considered to be in different places. He will let you play things like Suspended Terrain but not Steel on Steel.

Ruby of Iuchiban Inexperienced

This just came up witha friend of mine. I played the ruby, and next turn as a limited action (because i believe you have to wait to your next limited phase to use it's action)

You don't. There are no "summoning sickness" rules in L5R. You are in your Action Phase, and it has a Limited action on it. You can use it immediately.

I bowed my unit to bow one of his guys. Then on his next turn he destroyed the ruby during his limited phase, he then unbowed his guy. This would not work like that correct, because there is no writing on the ruby saying that when it is destroyed, unbow your guy, just that while it is bowed you cannot unbow your guy, and he was already past his straighten phase, effectively bowing his guy for 2 turns. Am i wrong on any of this? checked all of l5r's faqs and rulings and see nothing of it.

You were correct. As soon as the Ruby leaves play or straightens, the restriction against straightening its targeted Personality ends. That's all. He does NOT get to straighten immediately.
