rules for 19 March 2004

In a message dated 3/19/2004 6:19:01 PM Pacific Standard Time, writes:

About flee not canceling overwhelmed. If an action ever targets, it always targets. [DE p. 72]

Jeff,

I must have a different rule book then you. I can't find this on page 72. In fact I can not find this simple sentence in the rule book.

You quote the rule yourself.

"An action targets something if it uses the word "target" or if any player sometimes has to choose what it affects. If no player, under any circumstance, has to choose what gets affected, the action is not targeted."

If there is a choice at least some of the time, the action is targeted.

If there is never a choice, the action is untargeted.

Also, does this imply that if an action does not give a player a choice of a target does it not really target? "If no player, under any circumstance, has to choose what gets affected, the action is not targeted." So if my opponent has no choice to choose his only remaining personality in the battle to die because of overwhelmed, is he techinically not targetting?

He would have to choose if he has more people in the battle, so his choice always counts as a targeting choice, even when there is only one possibility.

I also found this info on page 73. Targets for an action can sometimes be chosen by a player other than the one taking the action. Deciding which action to use or which card to play is not a targeting decision.

So does this statement go against the current overwhelmed rulings dealing with wedge and flee?

It clearly states that even though the targets are being chosen by a player other than the one taking the action(s) it still is not a targetting decision.

No, it doesn't. It's also two rules, not one.

"Targets for an action can sometimes be chosen by a player other than the one taking the action."

This means an action isn't necessarily untargeted just because the person who played it doesn't choose anything.

"Deciding which action to use or which card to play is not a targeting decision."

If I have two Ratling Conjurors in play, and I decide to use, say, the left one, I am NOT targeting it when I decide to use it instead of the right one. Likewise if I have two Tsuruchi Hiros. Whether these actions are targeted depends on what they do, not on the fact that I could have used a different one.

Moshi Kekeisu

Can moshi Kekeisu's (ranged attack compared to chi) ranged attack be tsuruchi techniqued?

Technically, you can play the card, but it will not increase Kekeisu's attack's strength.

rules for 19 March 2004

Ok, so other than canceling the honor gain or loss before it happens, non-modifiable cannot be change. So here is another question now. What about In Time of War?

Irrelevant. "This applies only to total Family Honor, and does not modifyi ndividual losses or gains." The cap is still the cap. The bonus is not modified. Your total is.

rules for 19 March 2004

Ok I followed up on the rules archive and found this:

In Time of War Reads, "In Time of War For the rest of the game, no player's Family Honor may rise over 5 points from what it was when the turn began. This applies only to total Family Honor, and does not modify individual losses or gains." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Does not limit changes in honor total for increases that are not considered Honor gains (e.g., Experienced 2 Bayushi Yojiro). [Reversal, JA, 16 December 2001] If you exceed the maximum Family Honor allowed, your Family Honor becomes that maximum at the end of the turn. [JA, 1 October 2002]

Which would lead me to believe that I would get the full amount but then at the end of my turn IToW then lowers (in a sense) all honor gains to 5 over what I started with. Since I cannot gain more than 5 over what I started with.

So the last part of the rules archive should read:

If you exceed the maximum Family Honor allowed in a turn, your Family Honor becomes the maximum allowed at the end of the turn. Meaning 5 over what I started with.

No. Your Family Honor is held at or below that maximum all turn long. It does not drop just at the end.

That ruling is in the archive because someone pointed out a technicality that when the cap changes at the end of the turn, any extra gains that it prevented from adding will re-apply and players will get them anyway. This ruling fixes that abuse.

Abilities and Experience Personality Stacking

Kan'ok'ticheck:

Text:

"Unaligned Ratling Chieftain Creature Soul of Tchickchuk Plague tokens do not affect Ratlings. Each other Ratling Personality and Ratling Follower gains +1F while in Kan'ok'ticheck's army. Reaction: When paying for a Ratling, bow Kan'ok'ticheck to lower the Ratling's Gold cost to 0. You may take this action when paying for a Ratling attaching to Kan'ok'ticheck."

Kan'ok'ticheck Exp.

Ratling Clan Champion . Green-Green-White Tribe Chieftain . Creature . Experienced . Unique . Will only join a Ratling player. Ratling Followers gain +1F while attached to Kan'ok'ticheck. After each time one of your Ratling Followers attached to one of your other Personalities is destroyed, you may return it to play unbowed attached to Kan'ok'ticheck

When I overlay Kan'ok'ticheck with Kan'ok'ticheck Experienced,

Do the bonuses to Ratling Personalities and Ratling Followers stack? Do they become +2F? Or do they stay as +1F

What abilities would that personality now have?

When you overlay, you keep everything on the old card starting with an action type keyword (Limited, Open, Battle, and Reaction) and you keep any effects currently active on it. You lose all the old printed stats, keywords, and other traits. An overlayed Kan'ok'ticheck would have only the Reaction from the original. The Follower bonus would only be +1F.

Rules 19 March (Overwhelmed)

What was that I heard about needing 2 Test of Courage to cangel Overwhelmed? Is that accurate?

A Test of Courage cancels an action entirely. It stops everything that action hasn't done yet.

You would need to use the Right Hand of the Emperor twice to keep both units in the battle, though. The Right Hand only stops one movement.

Stand Targets? (was rules 19 March)

Stand Against the Waves doesn't target. You opponent must bow as many of his peeps as you have in your army (assume your army meets the requirements for playing Stand). There is no instance when the opponent targets his peeps. Even if he only has one guy, he's not targeting and bowing that guy. He's bowing as many peeps as I have with Followers. Or everyone.

If Stand Targets, please explain to me that logic?

The first effect targets because there are potential choices involved. At this point, even if it cannot be fully completed, it can be responded to by Reactions to targeting.

If the targeted effect cannot bow a sufficient number of Personalities, the second, untargeted effect occurs as well.

Does the terrain that makes me bow as many peeps as I have bowed holdings target as well?

Yes. You have to pick who bows.

Gunso question

So, if I have 2 or 3 Gunso on a personality, will they give each other the force bonus?

Yes. [card text] They are each a Follower in the other's unit.

On: Gunso
Show of Good Faith and Seppuku

Could you use Show of Good Faith on a dishonoured personality and they force him to commit Seppuku?

While the Personality is under your control, you can do anything with him that you could with someone you brought into play normally, other than move cards or tokens to or from him. [card text]

rules for 19 March 2004

Recently, when someone asked about "Remorseful Seppuku", Jeff said that the personality dies...

"Dishonorably with an Honor loss."

I was told, if the personality was dying due to seppuku, they did not incur the usual honor loss that a dying dishonorable personality would (because it's seppuku!).

I guess I would like come clarification. Thanks!

The exact question asked involved a Personality who could not be restored to Honor due to additional outside card effects. I was not giving a general ruling.

question [Jeff]

The Dark Soul Mask

Text Unique This unit does not add its Force total to its army. Battle: Bow Dark Soul Mask and this Personality to permanently move the mask onto an opposing Personality.

I am always confused by the use of 'permanently'.

It means "until the end of the game". It's a duration other than "until the end of the turn". That's all.

It seems to me that if I attach the mask to one of my personalities, then go into a combat, bow the mask and it's personality and move it to an opposing personality, there it stays forever and ever until the end of the game.

It does stay there until the end of the game...or until something else moves it. Just like if it didn't say "permanently", it would (arguably) return to your Personality when the turn ended... or when something else moved it.

Hidden City

I've forgotten - how long does it take new expansions to become legal for the current storyline simulation?

30 days from release. The official release date is April 26th, so the legality date is May 26th.

For that matter, a hypothetical question: once I have access to Glassblower, I'm curious about its possible combo ability with Crystal Mine. Glassblower is a gold producing holding, thus I think I should be able to use it for the cost of Crystal Mine's ability (bow Crystal Mine and one of your other gold producing holdings to produce 6 gold).

Correct.

The obvious benefit to this is that Glassblower could also before this or at the same time use up its glass tokens, since it does not bow due to its own ability - though not afterwards since I could not use an ability on a bowed card. Do I have this right?

Yes.

Newer Player...Question about game play...

My question is this....When playing the game, Once you reveal the cards in your Provinces during the Action Phase, if you reveal a holding and can pay for it...does it stay in that particular province or does it move to a seperate spot, like next to your Stronghold to be used to produce gold?

No where in the rulebook does it say that it "attaches" to the provence, only that "all Holdings come into play bowed."

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

You can't buy Holdings in the Action Phase, regardless of how they got turned face-up. Dynasty cards are bought in the Dynasty Phase, near the end of your turn.

Any card you bring permanently into play that doesn't attach to one of your Provinces goes into the one general-purpose area known as your "home". This is technically also the place where your Stronghold and Wind are. It's a catch-all area that holds everything that is neither attached to one of your Provinces nor defending or attacking a Province during an Attack Phase.
