L5r-ccg Digest, Vol 9, Issue 40

A quick question:

My opponent reveals an Imperial Quest and targets one of his Personalities with over 2 Chi to bow him. In his Action Phase I play a Bonds of Fate targeting the quested Personality. What happens?

a) The Personality straightens and become dishonored. b) The Personality straightens. c) The Personality continues bowed.

Still being discussed by the Rules Team.

Tribute vs. Strange assembly

This came up in a friendly game with a friend of mine. If I play tribute to your house to lower his personal honor back to his starting, If strange assembly comes up can he win immediately or does he wait til the tribute wears off?

He must wait (unless, of course, his starting Family Honor is at least 8 points above what he needs to get to to score an Honor Victory).

Iuchiban

If i cancel iuchibans (once per turn) duel, can he do it again that turn?

Yes. Canceled actions don't count against the number of times they can be used.

Battle actions?

Do open actions and reactions taken during battle qualify as battle actions for the purposes of the Ring of Water?

They don't qualify as Battle actions for any purposes. Only Battle actions do.

L5R encyclopaedia

I was thinking of purchasing the L5R encyclopaedia, but am afraid that AEG will print an "updated, Diamond version" some time soon.

Can anyone from AEG confirm if there are currently any plans to do so?

There are no current plans to produce a Diamond-legal Encyclopedia. If we do print one, it will be near the end of the environment.

Rules Questions

Does "The Mountain Does Not Move" stave off Chi Death until the end of the turn, or does it work more like "Feign Death" in this regard?

The Personality will still have 0 Chi after his destruction is negated, so he will just try to die again.

Questions

Couple questions: 1 - Isawa Wazuko has the water trait for purpose of Renewed Energy?

She does not have the Water trait for any purposes. Only her action has that trait. Traits on a card's actions do not apply to the entire card UNLESS it's an Action card (or Kiho, which is technically an Action card).

2 - Earthquake has the earth trait?

The card itself does not, for the same reason and because you cannot use just the "Earth" in the title.

3 - If I have one unit in battle and the opossing player use an overwhelmed can I cancel it with Flee the darkness? Or it does not target?

If an action ever targets, it always targets. [DE p. 72]

However, you can never cancel Overwhelmed with Flee the Darkness in a two-player game because Flee can only cancel an action that is targeted at one of your Personalities by another player. Your opponent's Overwhelmed forces you to target your own Personality.

Keyword

Hi, Lets see if I understand this right. About keyword... If a card requires an shugenja that has been targeted by an action (like danjuro) it can be minor shugenja because he has the keyword?

Yes.

If it requires the water trait (like Renewed Energy full power) it can't be isawa wazuka cause her ability has the water trait but not her?

Correct.

TRAINING GROUND CARDS

I know that this question was already answered b4. Just to confirm, are TG cards legal for Tournaments?

The four new promo cards in The Training Grounds became legal when Reign of Blood did. They are allowed.

Honor Modification Question

Ok, so Kakita Mei Exp does her little duel trick and the other player refuses and takes the honor loss. Now here's the question. I understand that I cannot modify the loss, but does this only refer to increasing or decreasing the honor or does it refer to anything that could be used to affect honor.

Anything that affects the loss. Changing the amount, changing who suffers it, changing it from a loss into a gain, negating it -- these are all examples of modifying it. Copying a loss is NOT modifying it.

(i.e. I play dirty politics to cancel the honor loss, which in a sense is a modification.

Losses aren't canceled. Losses are negated. Actions are canceled. But anyway, Dirty Politics won't work very well. It will fail to negate the loss, then it will produce a 0-point gain (since it didn't negate a loss).

If that is the case then what about rhetoric wouldn't that also be non-allowable?)

Rhetoric would also have no effect on it.

Kuruma Data vs Moshi kekiesu

can Moshi kekiesu target the personality with kuruma data with her ablitiy

No. Kekiesu is only allowed to break the rule that a Personality cannot be targeted if he has Followers.

Togashi Tashishai

Togashi Tashishai 3f/3c 6/7/3 Dragon Clan Ryuy-Dragon Emissary Nonhuman-Cavalry

I know I read it somewhere, but can't find it at the moment. Isn't Tashishai considered a Courtier?

No. Only "Diplomat" is equivalent to "Courtier". [DE p. 65]

Egg of P'an Ku and Shiba Danjuro

This just occurred to me,and I'm trying to verify it.

When the egg of P'an Ku enters play,it becomes a copy of any one personality in play. That means that the egg has to target said personality, right?

Right.

If so,and the personality is a shugenja, then Shiba Danjuro can redirect the whole action unto himself, effectively resulting in an egged Danjuro-probably

Right.

silly rules question...and more...

Specifically, this regards Yajinden. If he steals a personality, and that personality bows during the course of his turn, when (if) yajinden straightens and the personality returns to its former controller, does it come back bowed or straightened?//

Since straightening both at the same time is not impossible, you would do that and return the stolen Personality unbowed.

A few Question

First, I want to get a clarification on wording issues. This is a result of the recent ruling on CotW and Kuro's Fire.

From looking at page 71 in the diamond rulebook I see the following rules:

<snip> 2.) Actions on an Item, Spell, or Ancestor are performed by its personality. 3.) Actions which involve one or more Personalities or followers in their cost, [...], are performed by those cards. </snip>

And from the CotW: <snip> Once per turn, one of your Mantis Clan Personalities need not bow to produce a single or combined Ranged Attack that targets opposing cards. </snip>

So my question is on the difference between "perform" and "produce."

"Produce" means "create and be the source of the effect".

"Perform" is a game term whose definition only matters when the word "perform" appears on a card.

In the situation where a shugenja casts kuro's fire:

By page 71, the personality would be "performing" the action, but the spell would be "producing" the the ranged attacks.

Correct.

And since CotW specifially states that the PERSONALITY must "produce" the ranged attack, keeping the personality from bowing would not be legal. Is this the reason for the current ruling?

Yes.

If this is true, sould the ruling also include Taut Bowstrings?

It does.

Second question is on the card Strange Alliance

<snip> Strange Alliance Limited: Target a Dishonored Personality. Until the Personality leaves play, he may not be restored to Honor, and may neither be targeted by nor perform Political Actions. </snip>

After I target a personality with Strange Alliance, could I then target them with Remorseful Seppuku?

Yes. The Samurai fails the definition of "perform" for Remorseful Seppuku because it is not playable only on your own Personalities.

Rule of thumb: if you can make other players' cards "do" it, it isn't "performing".

What would happen? Would they die honorably, dishonorably (with no honor loss), or dishonorably (with an honor loss)?

Dishonorably with an Honor loss.

Third question is on Cloak of Night: <snip> Limited: Bow this Shugenja and destroy Cloak of Night to attach a Spell, Follower, or Item from your hand to one of your Personalities, face-down and without cost. While face-down, that card is not in play and does not affect play. As an Open action any time later this game, you may turn the card face-up to bring it into play. If the card is not a legal attachment at that time, discard it; otherwise it enters play without cost </snip> I am a bit confused about the "legal attachment at that time" clause versus the "open action" clause. If I cloak a follower (excluding Traveling ronin), how could it be a legal attachment at anytime other than my Limited phase?

It means to check versus any attachment retrictions when the card is revealed rather than when it is first put face-down. For example, if a Personality already has a Weapon, I can use Cloak of Night to play a second one face-down. Then, if the first is destroyed, I may now reveal the face-down one and have it attach without being discarded because it is not now violating the "one Weapon per Personality" limit.

Personality A has a "cloaked" Ogre Warriors. I declare an attack and assign said personality. At some time during the battle, could I take an open action and attach the Ogre Warriors? But it is not a "legal attachment at that time" because page 60 of the rulebook states that attachments of followers happens as a limited action during your action phase, or does this card override the rulebook an allow you to attach?

Well, for one, there is that.

Two, the rule is not that "all attachments of all Spells, Followers, and Items in any way, shape, or form must be as a Limited action to your own people and nothing else is ever legal" (which is how some people interpret that paragraph). The rule is that there exists a Limited action of attaching a card from your hand to one of your own people. If you have other ways of creating attachments, those are fine too.

And finally, Birth of the Sword and Shadowlands: <snip> Birth of the Sword Each player gains two Honor and may draw one Fate card. </snip> Since a shadowlands player cannot gain honor, would they be able to draw a fate card. Wouldn't the effects of the event be ended after "gain two honor?"

The effects are "gain two Honor" and "draw a Fate card if you want to". They are separate and independent.

Bloodspeakers.

Does the bloodspeaker trait allow you to cast Maho Kiho's and attach Maho Spells? Or do you need to be a Monk/Shugenja? Also, can only bloodspeaker Monk/Shug's cast Maho stuff?

"Bloodspeaker" (and "Policial", and "Elemental", and "Maho", and "Siege", and "Berserker", and...) means nothing in the basic rules of the game. It does not create any universal new capabilities or restrictions. It's just a trait for other cards to interact with.

Is there an advantage to using bloodspeaker Samurai? (other then their nifty innate abilities.)

Only the advantages that the rest of your deck capitalizes on.

Kuro's Fire

Does each ranged attack from Kuro's Fire count as a seperate Battle action?

No.

crane clan champion

the crane clan champion can have a duel of personal honor does that mean you use personal honor vs. personal honor instead of chi?

Correct. The standard results are the same though: the loser dies. (Many players believe that duels of Personal Honor always dishonor the loser and duels of Force always bow the loser, but these are misconceptions.)

Togashi Shozo/Shrine to Fukurokujin

Shrine to Fukurokujin You may have no more than one Shrine to Fukurokujin in play. Bow Shrine to Fukurokujin to produce 2 Gold. Limited: Bow Shrine to Fukurokujin and one of your Personalities to draw a card. Show the card to your opponents; if its Focus value is greater than or equal to the Personality's printed Chi, discard it.

Togashi Shozo Dragon Clan Monk - Tattooed Once per turn, before you draw a card, instead look at a number of cards on the top of your Fate deck equal to one plus the number of Elemental Rings you control and draw one of those of your choice. Leave the remaining cards in their original order.

Can I use the power of Togashi Shozo with Shrine to Fukurokujin?

Yes. You still have to show the drawn card to your opponents and possibly discard it.

Question about moving clan swords

Ok i'm a little confuser about this switching chi and ph when this includes an item on the pep...

It works like this. Whenever you set a stat directly to a certain value (like Force of Will setting a card's Chi directly to what it's Personal Honor is, or the Black Heart of the Empire setting a card's Force to 0), you throw away any earlier math. The latest effect gives you the card's new current total. But any modifications that were present before are still there, so if they go away, the total changes accordingly.

Restoring the Doji treasury

"Each player may search his Dynasty deck for one Gold-producing Holding, lower its Gold cost by 3, and put it into play bowed, paying all remaining costs."

That's the text for this event.

I had an argument with a friend of mine, but I was forced to concede. he didn't want to shuffle after the event resolved for him. It doesn't say you have to shuffle your deck! Is there a superseding rule somewhere that mentions whenever you search your deck that you'd have to reshuffle?

Cardinal Rule #4 [DE p. 34]. Always shuffle a deck after searching it.
