Some Reichin's Helm Qs Plus some Dojo Raiden Qs

Okay, Let's say I've got Tamori Chieko(1/3 with 2PH and no relevant abilities) out with Reichin's Helm, Ryoshun's First Gift and Kuro's Fire attatched.

Chieko enters a battle and Chasing Osano-Wo's herself, bowing the Ryoshun's First Gift to remain unbowed. Does she gain +4 Force(her current force + PH), +5 Force(her force + PH with 1 spell/kiho cast, and if so, which counts?) or +6 Force(her force + PH with both the spell and Kiho cast)?

+6F.

If she then cast Kuro's Fire, what's the total RA strength and how many can she make?

Up to 7 attacks with a maximum total strength of 11.

Other Question, how does Dojo Raiden effect Zashiki Warashi, specifically the chi loss portion?

"-2" is one numeral. [DE p. 102] Increasing it by one produces "-1", then "0", then "+1", and so on.

If the Dojo Raiden has been Sezaru's Gift'ed couple times, what happens?

It would increase by 2, 3, or 4 each time.

New Watch List Cards

I don't know why you think that answer is valid for the question that was asked. He was specifying why design chose to require a Lion personality, rather than any personality. It limits the deck-styles and out-of-clan possibilities for this particular stronghold, which seemed unnecessary.

It does, in fact, limit out-of-clan Personality use, which is fully intentional. It did seem necessary to us.

Ring of Air Q + Hoshi Chuichi Q

Ok, say that I have Hoshi Chuichi out, and I play Purity of Spirit on an opposing Shadowlands personality. The card states "The caster need not bow if the target is Shadowlands". Can I bow him anyway, even though it says I need not?

Yes.

For the Ring of Air, if I have Ryoshun's First Gift on a Personality, and I play, for example, a Chasing Osano-Wo using that personality to cast the Kiho, and bow Ryoshun's First Gift to prevent the personality from bowing, does that count as a casting of a spell for the purposes of playing Ring of Air?

Yes. Both Chasing Osano-Wo and Ryoshun's Last Words are cast.

Ie. if I did this, then played a card such as Flee the Darkness or Purity of Spirit, does that satisfy the three spells and / or kiho's being cast?

Yes.

New Watch List Cards

Thanks for the detailed response, however I think the same could have been accomplished by bowing any of their personalities in the battle and not making them a lion one. What is your opinion on whether this opens lion up for suffering early province losses as compared to other clans? My feeling, solely based on my play experience, is that lion suffers the most from early province destruction due to slow gold production.

Lion's gold production is the fastest in the Diamond environment. It is one of the reasons they are doing so well.

No change to the stronghold ability, other than making its activation mandatory, can possibly make Lion more likely to suffer early Province losses than anyone else.

Doji Nagori, kolat assassin, sepukku

I'm either dumb or confused. can someone explain to me how this works?

How can a personality seppuku to reduce honor loss from a Kolat Assassin?

Because seppuku is done as soon as the Personality gets targeted by Kolat Assassin, not when the honor loss actually occurs. [DE p. 88] This is before any effects of Kolat Assassin have occured, so the Personality is still alive.

The first Nagori commits seppuku, then Kolat Assassin tries to kill him and fails, then Kolat Assassin causes a 4 point loss which gets changed to 1, to which the other Nagori reacts with Rhetoric.

rules for 23 Feb. 2004

Hida Katai's ability states

Crab Clan Samurai € Yu 2 Once per turn, you may attach a Follower to Katai from your discard pile as if it were in your hand.

Can I do this in both my turn and my opponent's turn?

Yes. However, Katai does not give you any actual method of attaching a Follower to him. Once per turn, he allows some other card or game effect that puts a Follower onto him from your hand to use (a dead or discarded) one from your discard pile instead.

So, I can't attach followers during my opponent's turn barring some method to attach followers as open actions,or some other way to bypass the restriction to attaching followers during the limited phase.

Correct.

Wanton Destruction question.

If you win both duels created by a Wanton Destruction, does that qualify you to play the Ring of Fire, or do the Duels have to come from different cards, or with the other player having a chance to play an action in between?

You just need to win at least two duels. Wanton Destruction creates two duels. Win both, play the Ring.

Rule Question

Is returning The Path of Wisdom to your hand considered playing the card?

No.

Doji Nagori, kolat assassin, sepukku

That having been said, if I have a Dishonored Samurai in a battle, and someone wants to shoot him with a Ranged Attack, can I seppuku? It's an action that's going to cause me an honor loss... right?

No. Kolat Assassin causes an honor loss. Making a ranged attack does not cause an honor loss. It kills something (maybe).

Beserker rage + carrier pidgeon

When U use beserker rage it says ' the beserker bows when the battle ends, an effext that cannot be negated, and cannot straigten until your events phase 2 turns from now' Now does Carrier Pidgeon count as negating this or straightening the card.

Carrier Pigeon absolutely counts as straightening a card. "Straighten that unit and move it into the battle." [card text]

i.e. is it legal to carrier pidgeon a personality after they perform BR on the opponents attack phase?

It is legal to play. There is no rule in L5R that says you cannot play an action when you know some of its effects won't happen. However, it will not straighten the Personality. Nothing can straighten that Personality until your Events Phase two turns from now. Carrier Pigeon will move the whole unit in and only straighten every other card in the unit.

Blood Pact Question

The card states:

Give +1/+2 force to one of your personalities and -1/-2 to an opposing.

Does this require an opposing personlity, or are they two seperate effects?

Both.

Blood Pact has two effects. They are both mandatory and they both require a different target. You cannot take any action in L5R unless you can pick all the necessary targets.

question

If I bow for the favor, can I use carrier pigeon to straighten up my personality and move it into the current battle?

Yes. (I am assuming you are talking about lobbying on your turn and using Carrier Pigeon on your opponent's.)

Doji Nagori, kolat assassin, sepukku

If any part of an action is targeted, it is a targeted action. The issue isn't whether you know the Honor loss is going to happen, the question is whether the action caused the Honor loss.

What if "Honor and Glory" has resolved, and I want one of my Samurai to issue an "Iaijutsu Challenge"? Can he seppuku upon issuing the challenge?

By intent, he should be able to.

Forwarded to the Rules Team.

A few rule questions

1. My opponent plays Show of Good Faith and steals one of my personalities. He then proceeds to kill my personality he now controls. If one of us plays Feign Death on this personality, the personailty will come back under his control. But does the effect of Show of Good Faith (can't attack) wear off?

It wore off the instant he left play. [card text]

2. My opponent attacks my provinces A and B with a Yogo Soto on each province. During battle at province A, he uses Soto's ability to switch location with the other Soto. As a reaction, he bows his stronghold and uses the Right Hand's ability on the Soto who's leaving prov A, trying to keep both Soto's in province A.

What happens?

a) Both Soto's end in province A. b) the move is simultaneous, which means canceling it will cancel the whole thing, each of the Soto's will stay in its province. c) Nakata, get off my list.

From the archive, B. Only the correct term here is "negate". The Right Hand does not cancel anything.

Doji Nagori, kolat assassin, sepukku

Why would one of your personalities be allowed to commit seppuku from being targeted by YOUR Kolat assassin

Because that's what the rules say. It's also nothing new.

(and why would you want to target your person?)?

Because sometimes you can get a beneficial net effect out of it. There's no reason to make something unlikely illegal.

This seems very similar, to me, to why you can't seppuku the honor loss from an Ambush:

Um....you can.

COTW question

Castle of the Wasp: Once per battle, you may target the current Province with a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards to lower its Strength by the Attack\222s

If I have an attacking army at Province A and an attacking army at Province B and I am resolving Province A. Can I have an attacking card, like Moshi Amika at Province B, Province a Ranged Attack and target the Province A to lower its Strength by the Attack\222s?

No.

rules for 23 Feb. 2004--Ring of Air / Rules Question

2) If I'm in battle and I just took my 4th battle action (which also happens to be my 3rd kiho action) can I play Ring of Water from my hand, Introspection off of it to get Ring of Air, and then play Ring of Air? or vice versa?

Yes and yes.--(jeff)

Ring of air:play after casting three or more spells/or kiho in one turn.

So if you have played 3 kiho in one turn, you may choose to play the ring of air whenever you want, even during battle resolution, even(I think) during the end phase and so on.

Not true. You must still play it immediately following its play condition.--(jeff)

Isn't that a contradiction? Shouldn't you then have to be required to play the Ring of Air/Water before taking a reaction (Introspection). Otherwise what would be the difference in taking 1 action to get the Ring of Whatever and however many actions in between enter play and playing the ring?

It is always possible to play more Reactions to the same original trigger until one of two things happen: A) All players elect in a row not to react anymore, or B) The trigger itself gets removed or mutated into something that can no longer be responded to.

A Reaction puts the game "on hold" right where it was until the Reaction finishes. That includes preserving whatever triggers are still "live" and legitimate to respond to. This is not the case when you are talking about delaying an arbitrary length of time to a later phase that same turn.

The thing is, Reactions can occur even during other Reactions. [DE p. 75] So you can have several layers "on hold" that become live again once these lower stages of Reaction are done.

So the two Ring example goes something like this:

Player 1's response to the fourth action: play Ring of Water Player 2's response to the Ring of Water: none Player 1's response to the Ring of Water: play Introspection Player 2's response to Introspection: none Player 1's response to Introspection: none. End. Player 2's response to the Ring of Water: none Player 1's response to the Ring of Water: none. End. Player 2's response to the fourth action: none Player 1's response to the fourth action: play Ring of Air Player 2's response to the Ring of air: none Player 1's response to the Ring of air: none. End. Player 1's response to the fourth action: none Player 2's response to the fourth action: none. End.
