Ikoma sume & destroying an army

Lion Clan Historian * Soul of Ikoma Kaoku Reaction: After a battle resolves in which an army containing your units destroyed the opposing army or a Province, bow Sume to permanently give each of your Personalities in that army +1F/+1C. Sume does not need to be in the battle to use this ability.

In that text, it explicitly says that destroying a province will trigger his ability. Is my text wrong, or can he trigger off destroying a province?

He can. [card text]

Question on Kaiu Hisayuki (Silence)

He also gets A extra 1 F if you are playing a RED Deck ,so Two of them Can Take a Province. The bonus does not come from a card in the unit, but the stronghold.Just thought I share this goodie(If no one has brought it up)

That doesn't work. Hisayuki only gets extra Force from "actions on cards that are not in this unit." [card text] Razor's Edge Dojo is a Stronghold. Strongholds are not cards.

Rules Question: Ring of Air

I have a questions regarding the ring of air. Suppose I bow a monk to cast my 3rd kiho in a turn. If I understand the ruling correctly, to play the ring of Air, I have to play it as a reaction immediately after he bows before the kiho is resolved.

No. You play the Ring after all costs have been paid and all chances to cancel the Kiho before it begins resolving have gone by without the Kiho actually being canceled. This is still too late to react to the bowing itself. The Ring cannot straighten that caster.

Simple Question

I have a simple question about spells: What create the spell's effect when a spell is cast? That is the spell that create it or the shugenja?

Effects come from the cards they're written on. Spell effects normally come from the Spell.

Kitsuki Kiyushichi

Ok. Thanks for the reply to my last question. I thought everything was fine until someone pointed out to me that the current timing of seppukku is not immediately upon the decision being made.

"If a player opts to have a Samurai commit seppuku, the Samurai must commit seppuku as soon as it's known that an honor loss will occur. That may be immediately after being targeted by a card (e.g., Ambush), or after a decision is made (e.g., Iaijutsu Challenge). [VRD, 30 November 2000]"

That archive entry is out of date. The latest rulebook is two years newer. Seppuku is done as soon as the samurai performs an action, gets targeted by an action, or makes a decision that will cause an unconditional honor loss to his controller. Seppuku beats all Reactions taken "after" refusing a challenge.

Questions

If a personality attempts to perform a ranged attack and it is cancelled, but his player uses the trait on Castle of the Wasp to prevent the bowing, must she now bow the personality to perform his ranged attack?

No.

If a player has her first action targeting a personality "protected" by the trait of Razor's Edge Dojo cancelled, must she discard again to perform another action targeting the RED player?s personalities?

Yes. She must discard the first time each phase she targets the Crab player's Personalities with an action, and since her action was canceled, she hasn't taken an action yet.

Your ring of air could be played after the whole spell resolves... Works this way with the flee... You say you're gonna kill this follower that follower and that pep. The opponents flee's so you stopp the current effects the followers are still destroyed

I thought that announcing all targets of an action was required before starting to generate its effects, thus Flee the Darkness would cancel the whole action before generating any effects, whereas e.g. Emergence of the Masters cancelled by A Test of Courage would still grant its Force bonuses. Might I have a clarification?

Sure. Consecutive ranged attacks are a special case. They are NOT all targeted at the very beginning of the action. [DE p. 98]

Daisetsu v. Overconfidence

If Hitomi Daisetsu casts Chasing Osano Wo on himself and I wish to play Overconfidence in response, would it be legal for me to pass on my opportunity to play a reaction, wait for my opponent to utilize Daisetsu's reaction, and then play the Overconfidence?

It's not only legal, it's mandatory that you wait. You CAN'T do it in the other order. Costs are paid before effects happen in L5R, so a Reaction to a cost (Daisetsu) must come before a Reaction to an effect (Overconfidence).

Ring of Air timing question

So I have the Ring of Air in my hand. For my third spell I cast Aid of the Grandmaster. I play the ring before I search for a card by the current timing. I then want to play Introspection. Do I do this before searching for the Aided card, after searching (and thus shuffling the card I aided for back into the deck), or can I choose?

Leon, get off my list.

For the rest of you: before searching due to the Aid's effect.

Temple of Hoshi

With temple of Hoshi as a stronhold May I use the Ring of Air when one of my dragon clan personalities that is not a monk or a shugenja cast a kiho ?

Yes. This is a REVERSAL.

Yoritomo Utemaro Ruling

Jeff,

Would it be possible to have an official statement (and/or Errata) added to the l5r.alderac.com/rulings archive or website concerning Yoritomo Utemaro's ability?

Well, we can't make errata, because explicitly stating that he can put those Followers on anyone's Personalities wouldn't actually change how the card works. Utemaro can put his tokens on anyone who can attach infantry Followers.

In my local playgroup there seems to be a heated argument on whether he is allowed to attach followers to other player's personalities. The main argument is over page 60 of the rulebook under "Followers, Items, Spells, and Ancestors" under which it states that "You must attach these cards to YOUR personalities..."

Yes. And then it says, "This attachment happens as a Limited action in your Action Phase." Tell your friends they're taking a sentence out of context.

I'll see about having Zen put an entry in the ruling archive when he gets back.
