Rules for 2 December 2003, Part 2

Zen Faulkes, sent 3 December 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

Rules Question: [Jeff, Zen]

Can a player who controlls a Shugenja that has Kuro's Fire attached, along with a follower or an item that can bow itself to produce a ranged attack, "combine" the first ranged attack from Kuro's Fire with that of the follower, and use the Stronghold trait to prevent himself from bowing, then go on to make more consecutive ranged attacks from Kuro's Fire and remain unbowed throughout the duration the spell?

No (Archive, http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/#Stronghold_boxes).

When targets are chosen: To Do What We Must

When are chosen the second target of TDWWM? Before the costs are paid (before destroying your personality)? or after?

Before.

Agasha Hamanari TDWWM Hoshi Chuichi, - Chuichi flee the darkness Hamanari is still live to use is reaction, and cancel flee?

Yes.

Even if flee is canceled (Hamanari or FoyK) Chuichi now is bowed and gain +2/+2, his force now is 4 (personality and unit force, as Chuichi add his force even while bowed) 4 is more than Hamanari's Force plus personal honor (see TDWWM). Chuichi survives even if Flee is canceled?

Yes.

question or Jeff A.

Strength in Numbers for purposes of playing its 2nd action.. must you have 3 three cards that have any of the 3 keywords or 3 cards that have the same keyword?

Same keyword.

Another set of Rules Questions

I have a Konetsu (4 chi) with a Diplomatic Apprentice (0 chi) attached. A 4 point honor gain happens. Can I Play Rhetoric, announce that I'm using Konetsu to redirect the gain to myself but instead bow the Diplomatic Apprentice, or would I not be able to because the Apprentice has a 0 chi?

Yes. Diplomatic Apprentice is not performing the action, it's simply taking the place of one part of the cost.

I have a Konetsu (4 chi) with Kaede's Fan attached and the 4 point honor gain is created (by, say, my opponent paying full for an Akodo Mino). I announce that I'm playing Rhetoric. Does the gain turn into a 5 point honor gain?

No; the gain was redirected, not created (Kaede's Fan card text).

Doji Jotaro does not need to be in the current battle to dishonor an attacking personality, I only need to have someone else be at the battle, correct?

Diamond rules, pg. 81: correct.

I cross 40 honor on my turn (I was below to start my turn). My opponent controls Hantei XVI. I play and cast Call the Spirit on him. At the beginning of my next turn, which happens first: I win via honor vicory or I lose control of Hantei?

Cardinal rule 3. Active player picks.

Rules for 1 December 2003, Part 3

[I]f you're still faced with the choice of bowing or dishonor, that Rokuro cannot prevent the bowing from Unrequited Love?

To be more precise than is probably necessary: It can prevent it, but the effect is the same as if you'd never bowed the Personality in the first place. So it is a rather pointless action to take.

Rules Question

If I attack with 3 units, one of then is Sozen (which is the bigger one) and my opponent plays a Overwhelmed, I must send home the other 2 units because I can't destroy Sozen, right?

Correct.

If I attack with Tatsuzo with a follower, and the opponent plays a Overwhelmed, can I cancel it bowing the follower?

Yes. Units always contain a Personality (Diamond rules, pg. 105)

Do I target Tatsuzo or the Overwhelmed doesn't target the unit?

I don't understand the question.

Reactions and Targetting

Since Reactions generally don't have choices involved, do they target?

No general answer to that.

If a personality tries to perform a political action and another player playes Enough Talk, does it target the original personality?

Yes. (It was for that reason why the Gold Edition targeting rules were implemented in the first place, among others.)

Question Flee the Darkness

The defender has no one present at the current battle nor any of his provinces. He has 2 shugenja in his home. He passes, I play No Hiding Places and shoot one of his shugenja. Can he play Flee the Darkness to cancel my ranged attack?

"During a battle" is a duration, not a location. Yes.

two questions

Is Peasant Vengeance an action performed by the follower that bows?

Yes (Diamond rules, pg. 71).

Can a player play a Reaction in a battle in wich it has no units?

Yes (Diamond rules, og. 80-81)

Ring of the Void errata

Please, could you add an entry in the acumulated rulings for the Ring of the void?

I don't how understand how anyone could make even a slightly plausible case for playing Ring of the Void without a Personality. I'm not convinced it's a problem. Plus, I'm not about to start adding Archive entries for every possible misconception that people have out there.

Questions about the current battle.

A personality saying bow this personality to do something or target something in the current battle would need to be in the battle right?

No. "Current" means "the one resolving."

Is saying "in this battle" and "current battle" similar?

Often, but not identical.

Would a card saying do xxx to a card "in this battle" need to be in this battle to perform the action?

Yes (Diamond rules, pg. 81).

backlogged Reign of Blood answers

Is this a reversal of Zen's ruling?

Look, citizens, anytime Jeff and I differ, Jeff wins. You don't even need to ask.

Rules for 2 December 2003

I'm confused.

Not as much as I am. I win. ;)

How are your two previous rulings different from my question concerning Flee and Keen Eye for Stand or Run and Show me Your Stance?

One is wrong. Hint: the one where I gave a reference to the Archive is the right one. Keen Eyes can't be played in response to targeting or paying costs for an action that generates a challenge (Archive).
