Is it legal to Spearhead a unit that bows due to the ending of Call to Arms' effect [?]

Yes, *if* that unit was in the last battle to resolve.

Overwhelmed and Ring of Earth

you said the that an army of two units, one with the Armour of Earth and one under the effects of the Ring of Earth that had Overhelmed played on it would have no option but to destroy the highest force unit. This doesn't seem to be consistent with the Flee the Darkness ruling.

The rulings are different because the cards are different. Flee the Darkness responds to targeting. The Ring of Earth does not.
