Rules for 19 August 2003, Part 2
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Greetings,
Rules for 19 August 2003
In other words all previous traits do not affect the game after you have overlaid a card over a previous version. Right?
Not exactly. A trait that was given to a Personality as some sort of "permanent effect" can survive an overlay; the changes to Faction alignment via Oath of Fealty, for example (see Rules Archive, Specific Cards, Actions, Oath of Fealty for more details).
Newei at Dishonor
Does Jester it give the bonus when it's bowed?
Yes (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 55).
Can Jester double the lost of refusing a Iaijutsu Challenge?
No. The loss is not due to "one of his or her own cards" (card text).
If a personality commit seppuku, does "No Mercy" eliminate the player when it comes to -14?
It depends. Seppuku reduces the amount of a loss, it doesn't create a new honor loss. The question you have to answer is, what generated the loss the Personality was responding to by committing seppuku? If it was one of your own cards, No Mercy can eliminate you.
Beeing dishonerd or re-honred is political?
No. Neither is an action, and only actions are Political.
Tch'Tch Warrens / No Mercy question
If a Rat player using Tch'Tch Warrens snags a card that causes an honor loss for playing it from someone else's discard pile, and then plays it and then No Mercy resolves, does he lose the game if he reaches -14 honor?
Jeff Alexander's already answered this, but just to reiterate in the "daily Q&A post": you lose. "One of your own cards" is not equivalent to "a card you own."
Corrupted Dojo in Diamond/
Corrupted Dojo is diamond bugged but I don't see it listed in the diamond spoiler on Aeg's site. I hope it was just left off.
As others have pointed out, the Diamond spoiler is for Diamond Edition only. Plus: The checklists on Steel and Iron include whether cards have the Diamond kanji or not. They're formatted very similarly, so it's a simple matter to merge checklists of different sets. They're at: http://l5r.shorturl.com
Tacs, ISOTF
Isn't the tac force bonus the result of an ability on the personality[?]
Show me where it says "Force bonus." Hint: It's not on the Personality. Tactician Personalities have a trait printed on them. That trait allows them to perform an action printed in ink *in the rulebook*.
However, the personailty is still the card usng the abiliity, performing the action. Therefore, the action's source is that card, the tactician personality.
"Performing" an action is not the same as the source of an action. For example, Personalities "perform" actions on items, but the source of the action is still the item. Yes, this causes the wordings on some cards to be... subtle. Unfortunately, this is the legacy of having the term "perform" used but never defined in the game for about five years.
And anyway, at one point, it was on the personality...
I don't think that was ever the case.
Just because the action is printed in the book as opposed to on the personality, to save space, doesn't mean that the force bonus is originating from 'the rulebook'.
I'm afraid it does, and has for a very long time. Again, this is not a new ruling.
Hunting Tiger
Does this [Razor's Edge Dojo] work the same with Hunting Tiger?
Again, repeating Jeff's answer: Currently, the two are both worded as costs, and work the same. This won't be true in Diamond, because Razor's Edge Dojo is changing.
Tacs, ISOTF
[In Search of the Future] is in Diamond to slow down Lion[.]
I disagree. Free force bonuses are far more widely distributed than just Lion clan. Decks of that sort can easily run ramant without some sorts of controls in the environment.
Question about I Give You My Name
I play I Give You My Name and I decide to get a Tsuburu no Oni from my deck or a Kyoso no Oni. Would I have to pay the cost of the Oni from being into play, it means, Would I have to sacrifice _another_ personality (for Tsuburu) or destroy a holding (for Kyoso)?
Careful. Not all oni are worded the same. Some have non-Gold costs (Tsuburo no Oni), and some have entering play effects (Kyoso no Oni). This can lead to rather different answers to what you might think is the same question.
In this case, the answer does turn out to be the same, because the only thing the spell waives are Gold costs and restrictions.
Bonuses into Penalties redux
Can Political Entanglements (PEs)turn a bonus on a Personality into a penalty?
No (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 31).
what happens if Kurohito or Tanitsu brings in a wind that triggers a personality (i.e. Any of the "costs 1 less if X is your Wind", or the ones of have special abilities if X is your opponent's Wind).
It'll depend on the particular wording of the card, but traits are always "on" and will act as though the Wind had always been there. In the case of, say, reduced gold costs, it will seldom have any effect for Personalities already in play, unless a card comes up that looks for gold cost (e.g., Thunder Calls to Fortune).
Bonuses into Penalties redux
if something reduces a number, it's a penalty, if something increases a numer, it's a bonus. Right?
Then, under Shadow Beast:
* If given a Night Medallion, its text will change to "each other Shadowlands Personality has +1C, to a minimum of 3." This will raise 1C Shadowlands Personalities to 3C, not 2C. [Netnews, JA, November 1999]
So this is a reversal right?
No, this is not a reversal. The Night Medallion does not increase or reduce bonuses or penalties. The Night Medallion changes numerals on a card directly, and it's very literal.
Consider two cards, where one card says, "gain -1F," and the other says, "lose 1F." Those two are functionally the same, right? Not for the Night Medallion. The Night Medallion would make the first say, "gain +1F", and the other says, "lose 3F."
Rules questions JEFF
Vaughn ruled that you could retrieve with Chuda retainer, cards afected by jama suru's trait (the one that says spell effects from suru are maho).
Jeff beat me to the punch, but again I'll repat it so that this is in the single Q&A post: Vaughn erred. Chuda Retainer refers to "Maho cards." Suru's creation of "Maho effects" does not make a card a "Maho card" by the Keyword Rule in the Gold Edition rulebook (pg. 33): it doesn't put the Keyword in the title, trait area, or as part of the action card ability.
hoseki is a little bit different, it says: this spell is considered a ninja action when used and not a spell effect... so the confusion grows bigger and bigger... it loses the spell effect, but is it a ninja spell action?
It is a Ninja action, not a Ninja Spell action or a Ninja card (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 33 again).
(no subject)
If Shiba Yoma exp is in battle with all shugenja at home or in other provinces and Night Battle is in play, can you take actions in this battle or cast into the battle still?
No. Yoma doesn't say, "treat shugenja as if they were present in the battle." Do you have shugenja? No? No actions for you.
If [Ambush] Strategist is attached to a shugenja with a ranged attack spell, would the spell or shugenja gain a Force bonus?
The spell. But because a spell does not contribute to the force of a unit (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 55) or a Personality (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 32), it turns out to be completely and utterly irrelevent. :)
A Question About Overlaying
if I overlay Kurohito after I have hit 20 I still keep the +2F/+2C?
No (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 36).
