A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Ruling [Jeff]
Consideringthe following combo: I play a Iajatsu Art with Mirumoto Uso (4Chi 3 Ph) against a Personality with 5 Chi and 2 PH. My Personality has Tsutomu no Shiryo attached. I use the ancestors ability to change the duel to PH. He focuses a 3, I focus a Rend the Soul. This changes the duel to a tie. After the duel I play Honorable Sepuku, how much honor do I gain?
8. Your Personality has a Personal Honor of 8 until the duel ends, because focuses last that long. Iaijutsu Art dishonors the loser -- that happens during duel resolution, which is still part of the duel. When Honorable Seppuku is played, your focus is still in effect.
The important thing to realize is that cards like Rend the Soul and Kharmic Strike do not change the duelists' stats when they make the duel a tie.
Rules questions
Now attaching the Imperial Standart is a Political action (H&E Rulesheet) so it can be cancelled by cards that cancel political actions.
Untrue. That rule applies only to actions on cards printed exclusively prior to Gold Edition. It does not apply to any cards in Gold Edition and later or to anything in those rulebooks. That includes attaching a card from your hand.
AEG Online Shop Payment System
What is the paymenent for the AEG Online Shop? (Visa, Paypal, etc.) I'm planning on taking the KYD set(International) and I'm leery of "testing " by placing information for the buyer and payer slots, it may be irreversible, can anyone explain how?
The only method of payment for our web shop and phone orders is a Visa or MasterCard credit card. We also accept checks and money orders with mail-in orders.
Mantis Rules Questions
Is the following sequence legal?
1) Declare a Naval Invasion. (as the attacker) 2) Use Kyuden Gotei's ability to tap one of my naval personalities and gain two consecutive battle actions. 3) Play Jagged Earth (terrain). 4) Play Blackened Sky.
I'm sure you can guess what happens now. ^_^ The part of the sequence I'm most curious about is number 3. Now while I didn't play a terrain as the first action of a naval invasion, I played a terrain before the defender was allowed to play. Is this legal?
Nope. Bullet item #2 from the naval invasion rules:
"Players with units in the Naval army may not play Terrains until after one of the other players passes or takes a Battle or Open action."
Terrains are not prohibited only as your first single action -- they are prohibited to all players with one or more units in the naval army until a player not in that group has had an opportunity to take an ordinary action.
Secondly, is Kyuden Gotei's ability considered a trait (which I can use with my Stronghold bowed) or an action (which I cannot)?
It does not begin with "Battle:". It is a trait. You can use it while the stronghold is bowed.
Question about Ch'tppu'kich
I have a question. My ratling deck played another ratling deck today and a question came up on Ch'tppu'kich:
Ch'tppu'kich says : Bow to switch the printed force of a ratling follower and an opposing non-ratling follower
Player A attacks player B
player A has a ratling peep with a 0 force non-ratling follower
player B has a ratling peep with a 2 force ratling follower
can player A bow Ch'tppu'kich to switch the force of his non-ratling follower with the force of the opposing ratling follower ?
Yes. There are no restrictions on who has to control the two Followers, what traits their Personalities have, or which one needs to be larger beforehand. They only need to be opposing each other. If they are, and you satisfy Presence and Relevance, you can use Ch'tppu'kich.
Another Naval Question
Sorry if this has been asked before, but how does Scout work with a naval invasion? (Assuming a legal naval invasion, so either City of Lightning or The Deathless was used)
Do I)
a.) Get to play the terrain, then take my first action for the naval invasion? b.) Get to play the terrain as my first action for the naval invasion? c.) Get hosed because the naval invasion rules supercede the Scout's ability?
c. (And it's not an "ability" in game terms.)
Armor of Osano-Wo help
With Armor of Osano-Wo, it doesn't say that you have to destroy a province, just declare an attack against one, right? Or do you have to actually win a battle as an attacker, and instead of destroying put the Ring of Earth into play? I'm getting confused....
MRP text: "Elemental Reaction: If you are the Attacker, instead of destroying the Province that this Personality is attacking, put the Ring of Earth into play." If you are the Attacker and about to destroy the Province that the Armor's unit is attacking (typically through battle resolution), you may use the Armor to negate the destruction and play the Ring of Earth.
Can you actually play l5r thru the Internet with a program called Gempukku? Where can I find info about it?
More enlightenment questions
And how does Once and Again actually work? Does the Event's effects repeat twice or what?
Once and Again allows an Event, by title, to resolve one additional time this game if revealed later in the game. This will typically be from another player's deck, though there are ways of reshuffling Events into one's deck.
Some corrections to the Enlightenment questions post
Sorry guys about the earlier "More enlightenment questions" post earlier, what I really meant to post was "What happens to the Elemental Rings that HOshi Tadao puts into play when Solar Eclipse resolves, are they already considered to count towards an Enlightenment Victory? Or do they return to your hand or get shuffled back to your Fate deck?"
The effects "The Ring does not count towards an Enlightenment Victory." and " At the beginning of your turn, two turns after this one, shuffle it back into your Fate deck." are negated.
Scouting Maneauvers
I'd like to know what actions I can cancel with this card... I see that Send Home, Ranged Attacks, To Do What We Must are actions that can be canceled with it but what about Duels?
According to the card, you can cancel any action -- Battle, Open, Reaction, and (in theory) Limited, and not just red-bordered Action cards -- when it targets one or more cards in the Scouting Maneuvers unit. Remember that targeting a whole unit at once also targets just the Personality.
Also there is a card that cancel all force bonus in a battle. I think that to do it, this card targets all personalities involved in the combat so I can cancel what it does.... Is that correct?
No. First of all, affecting "all" things that fit a certain description generally means you are NOT targeting them. Second, there is no rule that says targeting a bonus or penalty applying to a card also targets the card.
So cal Kotei
Are there plans to have a southern California Kotei?
Not one for just Southern California, no. All of California (not just Northern) is Region 2.
And yet another Enlightenment question
Would an Event that was targeted by Once and Again and then shuffled back to it's owner's deck by a Shrine of the Sun resolve another time?
If it is targeted with Once and Again, it may resolve one additional time, by title. Period. That is the effect of Once and Again.
If it was in your own discard pile AND you have not resolved it so far this game, its count for number-of-resolutions so far this game -- again, by title -- is reset to 0.
These effects are technically cumulative, but it's hard. Let's say someone else reveals and resolves Occult Murders. You react with Once and Again. Later, a second opponent reveals it. It resolves, too. Then you reveal it, discard it, and use Shrine of the Sun on it later. Now the game thinks Occult Murders has never resolved AND will allow it to resolve the next two times it's revealed, for any player.
What if the Event is your Solar Eclipse that you have already resolved?
While Solar Eclipse is active, the extra resolution counts from Once and Again are negated.
Does Shrine of the Sun's "If you have not resolved that Event this game, the Event no longer counts as having resolved this game" clause negate Once and Again?
No.
Stupid questions
2 questions.
What´s a nezumi deck?
"Nezumi" is the Rokugani word for "Ratling".
When i attach the celestial sword on shosuro turaki and for ex, she has 10 force by the sword and 1 force by her. I copy the force for a personality with 8 force, I lose the force of the celestial sword or I still adding the force?
If you copy 8F, her new total Force is 8. GE rulebook, p. 32:
] "It is possible to set a card's value directly to a particular ] number. Do not apply any bonuses or penalties already in effect to ] this new number -- in essence, they're already part of it. DO apply ] any later changes as you normally would."
Question about Revering the Past and Imperial Messenger
Can I use Imperial Messenger on Revering the Past?
No. Events are not played.
It's been clarified that I can use it on events, since an event is considered in play during the time it resolves.
Really? When was this?
The funny thing is, its a conditional honor loss. We know that Shame works with the messenger and that Shame is conditional if you target a samurai (sorta). See my line of reasoning?
Then the answer is even more, "no", because Imperial Messenger does not create an unconditional loss. It is not an action that "will" cause a loss.
"Conditional" means "dependent upon a player's choice". [H&E rulesheet] Shame does not create a conditional honor loss. That is why most Shadowlands strongholds cannot use it, whereas they CAN use Iaijutsu Challenge -- the loss from IC only happens if another player makes a certain decision.
will of something
does the kihos will of fire, air, earth, water make us play the rings on the game, to search for enlightment victory?
"Bow one of your Shugenja or Monks, remove this card from the game, and reveal the Ring of Earth from your hand if you don't have it in play."
You "reveal" it from your hand if it is not in play already. That just means show it to everyone. It is not another word for "play". These kihos do not play your Rings for you.
double chi
when we focus "strike of flowing water" and after, a focus 4, for example, using a double chi personality, the focus 4 counts as 16? (4x2=8 ->strike of flowing water/ 8x2=16 ->double chi)
Basically. Strike of Flowing Water doubles the focus value, and Double Chi makes you add the value twice instead of once. Strike would double it to 8, then you would add 8 twice for a total of 16. Don't forget to add Strike's own 3 focus twice, too! After all, you focused it as well.
Questions
My opponent has a shrine to daikoku into play, I bring otomo ambassadors to him, and select my own shrine of daikoku to give to him, what happens?
Giving someone else a Holding is a cost of playing Otomo Ambassador. [card text] If the player cannot receive the Holding you're trying to give him, you cannot pay that cost. If you cannot pay a card's cost, you cannot play it.
More Mantis Rules Questions
Here's the scenario:
I am attacking a province which has 3 Engineering Tokens (placed by Kaiu Hosaru) on it. Are those tokens a legal target for Yoritomo Komori (XP)'s ability?
No. Only cards in or attached to the other army are "opposing".
Rules Qs
1. Three Stone River-for the second part of the terrain, involving Personalities w/ Followers attached. If the Follower has MORE Force than the Personality, does the Personality's Force stay the same, or is it set to the Force of the Follower (in other words, can you "lower" a number to a higher number)?
It stays the same. You cannot lower a number to a higher value.
2. A challenge from Mirumoto Tsuge that is cancelled will not earn him a card, correct?
Correct, unless the action creating the duel is canceled so late that the challenge part has time to happen.
