Jeff Alexander, sent 29 May 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

rules questions

Does "wholeness of self" work in a similar way to "in search of the future", in the meaning of negation of bonuses that cards give to themselves?

the wording on both cards is similar but i am not so proud of my english and rules interpretation to be sure.

the main difference i see is "wholeness" negates modifiers excepts from cards in that unit, and " in search" negates bonuses except from attached cards.

A card is not attached to itself, but it is in its own unit. Wholeness of Self will not negate self-granted bonuses.

By the way wholeness of self negates the modifiers, only during that turn, but if the effect being negated is a permanent one , will it remain after the effect of wholeness expires?

Yes.

for example, i duel a personality under the effect of wholeness of self with Goju Kyoden's ability, the duel is refused, so the permanent penalty for refusal is negated, but only for that turn or simply it never affects the personality?

Only for that turn.

Another question, If i play with ninja can i target an " Oponent's non-aligned with their own clan personalitiy wearing kitsuki kaagi's journal", with traitor's grove?

Yes, by the Smart Cards rule. In that instance, Traitor's Grove has an ability that can target only Ninja cards.

ring of air

hy, my question is this: i need to know which are innate abiliys, for the ring of air sais:

An "innate ability" is an ability on a shugenja card. [GE Glossary] A shugenja card is any card with the word "shugenja" in its title or boldface traits area. Abilities that you bow a shugenja for, but which are not on the shugenja card, are not innate. Abilities that are copied onto or added to a shugenja card ARE innate.

rules questions

Rekai Harriers? if you use there force bonus negating abilty does it make a jade yari attached to the target 0 force?

Yes.

is attaching a weapon a force bonus?

Attaching is not a bonus -- a bonus is a THING, and attaching is something you DO. Attaching an Item does bring a bonus into existence, however -- the Force of the Item, which is added to the Personality's Force.

if so how long is it a bonus just the turn it is attached or is it a constant bonus?

The bonus lasts for as long as the Item is attached.

Stupid question

Running the Shadowed Tower of the Shosuro, it says "Ignore Scorpion clan Honor Requirements if you control no Shadowlands cards."

does that apply also to followers as well??

Yes. And if you can manage to find a Follower with the "Scorpion Clan" trait, it will even matter.

After a battle resolves?

Can you move one of your people from the current battle into a province thats battle has already resolved.

Yes. From the FAQ at http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ccg/faq.html :

] Q: Brand new questions now. Imagine that two of my Provinces, A and ] B, are attacked. My defense at Province A was successful. The ] Attacker is now resolving the battle at Province B. Can I use my ] unit-moving card to move a used defender from the first battle into ] this one? ] ] A: Yes. Although all attacking and allied units bow and return to ] their controllers' homes as soon as the battle they were assigned to ] is over, the Defender's own units do not bow at all, and do not ] leave their assigned Provinces until the entire Attack Phase is ] over. ] ] Q: Can units move into battles that have already finished? If they ] can, what happens when one does? Do we fight the old battle over? ] ] A: Units may move into battles that have already finished. Units ] moved into already-resolved battles don't fight there a second ] time. You don't recompute Force totals just because somebody showed ] up too late to do anything but bury bodies. Strategically, this is ] one way to save a valuable Personality whose army is about to be ] eliminated. ] ] If an attacking or allied unit is moved into an already-resolved ] battle, it will still become bowed, though it will wait and bow ] along with the cards in the last normal battle of that Attack ] Phase.

Question

After looking at Obsidian and Jade; If I target the Maw with Obsidian and Jade and then declare and attack. If I assign the Maw to attack during the infantry phase, neither the defender nor attacker can assign or move anyone into that battle as long as the Maw is there?

From the FAQ:

] Q: Obsidian and Jade says, "That Personality cannot assign or move ] to a battle with other Personalities, and other Personalities may ] not assign or move to a battle with that Personality." Does that ] mean it's illegal for other players to assign defenders against the ] Personality I played this card on? ] ] A: No. Those restrictions apply only to units on the same side as ] that Personality -- units trying to assign to a battle "with" it.

question

If I am attacking and the defender plays Torrential Rain and I cancel it with Kyuden Ikoma, does my opponent get to put the card back into his/her hand?

No, because Torrential Rain is not an Action card.

Question for Jeff A.

Any spell that requires a shugenja to bow + witch hunt + balance in nothingness. Player A attaches touch of death to his shugenja, player B passes, player A bows his shugenja w/ touch of death attached and targets one of player B's peeps, player B plays which hunt, and then player A plays balance in nothingness. Question: Is player A's Shugenja bowed as soon as the spell is cast or after it resolves?

Before it is cast, really, since it is a cost.

Campsite

When Someone attacks a province with campsite with 10 personalties, I have 8 cards and I draw 10 more. :I have to discard until a limit of 8 or I can use all the cards until the and of the battle????

You only need to discard down to your maximum hand size at the end of your own turns. [GE p. 59]

Kakita Chiyeko oddities

I'd like to hear some official explanation of how and why this works that way. Below are some problems that I can't seem to correct.

Chiyeko's ability is, "Reaction: Straighten Chiyeko before she issues or receives a challenge. Bow Chiyeko after the duel ends."

Yep. And that's why she works the way she does.

Q1: Her ability is a reaction to what exactly?

Chiyeko issuing or receiving a challenge.

Q2: Both Judgment and The First One say "bow to issue" which means that bowing is a cost to issue a challenge. It seems logical to assume that if her ability can be used before the bowing it can actually be used any time with the basis of "she is going to duel in the future' reasoning. Or is there a rules based difference?

"Before" on a Reaction means "immediately before". "After" means "immediately after". This is based on page 48 of the GE rulebook: "You must take a Reaction as soon as its trigger occurs."

Q3: If the difference between the cases in Q2 exists then how is Chiyeko's ability used as a reaction to receiving a challenge (as in that case it's actually required to be used before the Challenge action is even taken BUT only in the case one's going to be played)?

The point of placing her Reaction "before" the challenge was to insure it would always go before Reactions that get played "when" or "after" the challenge happens, thus maximizing the number of Reactions that could be used on her behalf under the Gold targeting rules, without adding a bulky and dangerous sentence like "this reaction always happens before any others".

I'd also appreciate if someone would mail me messages concerning Rend the Soul + Doji Reju. There are some oddities in that ruling too (though it makes much more sense).

The ruling in the archive is not up to date on this issue.
