Jeff Alexander, sent 26 April 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Yu + Pick Your Battles

Can you use the Yu ability of your personalities and then play pick your battles in orther to avoid the destrution of them?

Yes.

The destruction of cards in the winning army happens between determining which army has won and destroying the losing one. Pick Your Battles is played immediately before the losing army is destroyed. [card text]

Focusing question

According to the accumulated rulings, "Because focuses provide a stat bonus, effects that prevent bonuses affect focusing. [Reversal, JA, email, 30 August 2000]". Does this mean that a Personality who has an effect preventing him/her from gaining bonuses in the stat the duel is based on cannot focus, or just that the focusing doesn't actually have any effect on the stat in question but is legal anyway

Focusing is allowed but will not raise his stat any.

Actions on items and who performs them

Jeff, a few days ago a question was posted about Shinjo Xushen with a Daikyu. It was ruled that he could only create a ranged 7 if he assigned as infantry. However, after reading your latest ruling and reading the H&E rule sheet that says that the action on the item is performed by the personality, that says to me that Xushen is not only creating his own ranged 4, but a 3+1 from the Daikyu for a potential 8. Can you clarify this please?

A combined ranged attack is one attack (and one action). There will be only one +1 bonus.

If the Mask of the Maw is used to copy The Maw's ability to send a person home from the battle, can the personality that gains the ability actually use it if they do not have the Tactician trait?

No.

Sorry, Jeff, but I would like to have an explanation on this.

An action that counts as a use of Tactician is used instead of the standard Battle action of discarding a card for a Force bonus that Tacticians can take. Since only a Tactician can do that, only a Tactician can do something that's used instead of that.

Kakita Dojo

Is the reaction on Kakita Dojo used before or after focus cards are revealed?

The order of events in a duel is strike, reveal Focus cards, compare Chi totals, determine winner/loser. [GE p. 62] Kakita Dojo says, "Bow Kakita Dojo after a strike is called in a duel to give your Personality in that duel +1C." [card text] "After" on a Reaction means "immediately after" [archive, inferred from GE p. 48], so it must be done before Focuses are revealed.

Shamate Pass Question [Jeff]

Is the word "revealed" strictly defined?

In general, it means "turned from face-down to face-up". There are some contexts where it has a more specific meaning.

i.e. if I use morning glory castle to put someone in the province with Shamate Pass, will they gain the benefit from the region?

No.

cove of cursed blades?

hi , i have a cove of cursed blades in first province and my opponent assigns unit to attack that province and he resolved battle at second province . what happend with the enemy army in first province if i move CCoB with forgery from first province to second province?

Nothing. The Region was not there when they assigned.

Soshi Eiji and Goshiu no Shiryo

Alright, so Heaven and Earth brings up a new question for Eiji.

After a personality uses Goshiu no Shiryo's ability( Political Limited: Bow this Personality, who may then remain bowed, to target another Personality. Until Goshiu’s Personality straightens or leaves play, the other Personality causes his or her controller to lose 2 Honor each time the Personality bows.), can Eiji use his ability on that personality targeted by Goshiu if they have an ability that causes them to bow?

Yes. Key point: Goshiu states that the honor loss's source is the other Personality, not Goshiu.

Question about attachinbg cards

Can i attach a card (like an item or a follower) to a personnality my opponent control ?

No. [GE p. 49]

One simple question

This has probably been answered before, but....

Is casting Secrets on the Wind a political action?

For cards printed in Gold Edition and later, an action is Political if AND ONLY IF it has the "Political" keyword. [GE p. 4] Secrets on the Wind is in Gold Edition without that keyword. [card text] It is not Political.
