A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Rules Question: Moto Chagatai exp
Moto Chagatai exp: Unicorn Clan Champion * Samurai * Cavalry * Experienced * Unique Reaction: Once per turn, when another player moves a unit into or out of the current battle, move one of your Unicorn Clan Personalities into the current battle from any location or from the current battle to another Province.
Does the above text mean that if another player sends home one of *my* units, I can then use his ability?
Yes. You can use his Reaction after any other player moves any unit in or out of the current battle.
attaching items and tokens
"You must attach these (cards of items) to your Personality before you can use them", but...
"You may attach Items to any Personality..."
So, if I wont to attach my Item to other player's Personality it's my free will to do so, I just can not use them, right?
Wrong. Page 49 limits you to attaching Ancestors, Followers, Items, and Spells from your hand to your own Personalities only. The use of the term "any" under Items is used only to contrast them with Followers, which must meet Honor Requirements, and Ancestors, which must meet Honor Requirements and Clan alignments.
Master Smith:
"Place a +2F/+2C Weapon token on a Personality."
There is no yours, (nor any)... so, can I place this token on another player's Personality?
Yes. You are not attaching a card from your hand using a standard game action, so page 49 does not apply.
Rules Question: Patience
Patience Battle: Target one of your Tacticians in the current battle. Until the battle ends, that Personality gains +2F each time you Pass instead of taking a Battle or Open action. This is a use of the Tactician trait.
I'm defending with Moto Chen. My first action is to play this card. He plays Deadly Ground. I pass. Does Deadly Ground prevent me from gaining +2F?
No. Gaining +2F is not an action. Also, passing is not an action, so you are not prohibited from doing it.
ambush+tireless assault question [jeff]
if I play ambush, and my unit is sent home, can I play tireless assault to move t back in?
Relevant text on ambush (from GE version) Limited: One of your units beggins an attack against another player's unit. No OTHER units can be asigned or move to the battle
Since it's the same unit, it can move to the battle right? (usualy it's right away there, and movement cards are from one province to anotehr, but tireless creates a new situation...)
Actually, I think you're right. The original units are not prohibited from moving back in.
Question about Relentless Assualt.
With the wording on Relentless Assualt, where it states that it cannot target a personality that has been in a battle during the resolution phase of a battle that turn, what about a personality sent home via Torrential Rain, or from an Entrapping Terrain. Are they eligible to be Relentlessed, into a different battle, since they one they were in was ended, but did not resolve?
They are eligible. (And you mean Tireless Assault, not Relentless.)
The Code of Bushido and Temple of the Ninth Kami
With The Code of Bushido being played on a personality that has been targeted by the Temple, does it force them to challenge one of the personalites?
In fact, is it the same for something like Iaijutsu Challenge?
Yes and yes.
Question for jeff
If I play with Kyuden Agasha, am I able to play the spell The Wolf's Proposal for 0 gold after playing Scroll Cache?
Yes. Kyuden Agasha will not reduce the Gold cost of a Spell that only costs 1g to begin with. This allows Scroll Cache's discount to happen.
post for 25 April 2003 [Jeff]
After a personality uses Goshiu no Shiryo's ability( Political Limited: Bow this Personality, who may then remain bowed, to target another Personality. Until Goshiu’s Personality straightens or leaves play, the other Personality causes his or her controller to lose 2 Honor each time the Personality bows.), can Eiji use his ability on that personality targeted by Goshiu if they have an ability that causes them to bow?
Yes. Key point: Goshiu states that the honor loss's source is the other Personality, not Goshiu.
Jeff, it looks to me like Goshiu would give the personality a trait with an honor loss, not an action, nor would it link that honor loss to any kind of action. Therefore Eiji shouldn't work for the same reason I can't use him against corrupt gold - the honor loss isn't part of an action.
If a card has an action that involves bowing as part of its cost or effect, then once Goshiu no Shiryo is used on it, an honor loss originating from that card will happen each time that action is used. That card is therefore "a card which causes a non-variable Honor loss to its controller when one of its actions is used."
Ancestors
I have a question and I want a confirmation on a ruling :
The Noble Halls of the Akodo. Putting an ancestor into play requires that your personality bows as a cost, so a player can't attach more than one ancestor at a time to a personality right?
Right, unless you have a way of putting an Ancestor into play without bowing the Personality.
targeting q's
Can Tamori Shaitung exp cancel my opponent's The Wind's Truth. His argument was he wasn't targeting me, only himself as the recipient of the Wind's Truth. We pulled out the rulebook but couldn't find anything definitive.
The Wind's Truth targets the honor gain or loss and the new player receiving it.
And while I'm here, couple other targeting questions. Can Hoshi Eisai exp copy the force of a bowed personality?
No. You cannot target your own bowed Personalities with your actions.
Ratling Names
So I've heard that Ratling names are pronounced replacing the apostrophe with a click and the hyphen with a squeak, but that still doesn't completely clear up how they are pronounced. Are you supposed to say the words click and squeak, or are you supposed to make the sounds.
If you even bother trying to follow that rule -- and most people don't -- you'd make the actual sounds, not literally speak the words.
Bowing
When I´m Using The Towers of the Yago, I can bow a personality to bow a opossing personality without followers or a follower. I can bow a personality with a bowed follower?
The Stronghold says, "Battle: Bow this Personality to bow an opposing Follower or opposing Personality without Followers." A Personality with a bowed Follower nonetheless has a Follower. The ability your Stronghold gives you cannot bow her.
Rules question
Jeff / Zen,
Since an attack isn't "declared", can an opponent with Utaku Palaces straighten a bowed unit if I play an Ambush against it?
Yes.
Rules question
Same question for counter attack. If somebody plays counter attack, by current wording, can the Utaku Palace defender unbow somebody, since an attack was not "declared"?
Yes.
Same question about Shiro Matsu. The attack phase created by bowing the stronghold. Is that a "declaration" of attack?
Yes.
Legal cards
I´m new in the list. The cards of the series: Storm over Matsu Palace (like Focus) and Beiden Pass ( like Sneak attack) Are legal cards in tournament (open and gold)? Somebody can help me with this? Thanks Gralha
Every card ever printed is legal in Open, though you need to know how the Most Recent Printing is worded. The place to check for those is http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/ .
Only some of your cards will be Gold-legal. Most of them, especially the Personalities, will not be. Check the list at http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ccg/gold_checklist.html and focus on the cards from the "GE" Edition to see which ones you have that might have been reprinted in Gold Edition, which is the latest base set.
Superior Tactics
1. If I declare an attack to one single province and use Superior Tactics to move one of my attacking units to another province will this moving unit be able to destroy the province he/she is entering since I didn't declare an attack to it?
2. If I can do this can I also declare I will attack all provinces but move my units into only one of them?
You do not declare an attack against separate Provinces. You declare an attack against a PLAYER. You can then assign some units to each of his Provinces, or all of them to one, or none of them anywhere, or anything inbetween.
Even if you only assign units to one Province, it is possible to destroy other Provinces. Every time there is an attack, there will be a battle at every single one of the Defender's Provinces, even the ones where no one assigns any units. The Attacker chooses the order that the Provinces are fought over. It is possible to move units between Provinces, and if this is done, it is possible and legal to destroy Provinces that had no units assigned at the beginning of the Attack Phase.
Superior Tactics
Hmmmm... Let me see if I get it right
Let's say I attack (assign units to) province A and B. I resolve province A first then go to province B. You are saying that I can use Superior Tactics to bring my unit from province A to B? Is that it?
Only if your unit is still in Province A, which is nearly impossible to do as the Attacker. All attacking and allied units in a battle return to their controllers' homes after that battle. After the battle at Province A is over, no one will still have units in the Province except the Defender.
Gift and Favors
Hi! That's me again!!
What about this card? I've seen some decks at L5RShop.com that use only 1 Gifts and Favors....
Won't I lose the game if I bring my only copy of it into play?
You have NEVER lost the game by bringing a copy into play using its special ability. The newest wording makes it clear:
"Reaction: During your End Phase, if you've brought no Gold- producing Holdings into play this turn, bow your Stronghold to search your deck, then face-down Provinces, for this card. Put the first Gifts and Favors you find into play bowed and shuffle your deck. If you find none, you lose the game."
Timing Questions
Say hypothetically my opponent bows Kakita Munemori to cancel one of my political actions taken by one of my personalities.
I have one of my samurai challenge Munemori with Enough Talk!. Munemori focuses. I strike and play Poisoned Weapons. Munemori wins the duel (so the cancellation goes through) but dies immediately after the duel due to Poisoned Weapons.
Do I have an opportunity to play a second Enough Talk! to challenge Munemori and attempt to cancel his political action (before Munemori dies)? Is is still a legal play, since a personality is still taking a political action (although the personality is dead) which is the trigger for Enough Talk!?
Munemori dies too soon for you to React with another Enough Talk! He is dead and cannot be challenged.
Is a personality targeted with Honorable Sepukku considered to be performing it (and cancellable with Kakita Munemori)?
Yes.
Make them Pay vs I Give You My Name
Can you play Make them Pay on an oni summoned with I Give You My Name?
Yes, if the Oni has a printed cost greater than 0. I Give You My Name says "put the Oni into play, without Gold cost".
Ranged Attack
I don´t know the real name of the card but I think that is "Darkened Sky". It´s the card that you can do all your actions of ranged attack before the next player take a action.
That would be "Blackened Sky".
If he is the first player to take a action on battle obviously, he can use this card. First Question - If I´m the first player, and I take a action, this card has no effect until the end of the battle?
It takes effect immediately, no matter who plays it or how early in the battle it is.
Second Question - If the answer of the first question is yes, in a battle that have allies in play, for example I take a action, the possessor of the card can use it to take all ranged attacks against the player that did not take actions yet????
Only the one person who played Blackened Sky can make ranged attacks during its effect. It does not give extra actions to anyone else.
Question for Jeff
Can " deeds not words " be played during the battle action segment?
Only if you can somehow get it to satisfy the Rule of Relevance. In other words: no.
Battle/Open Actions
Let's say I have two personalities, one inside a battle and one out. The outside personality has an Open action as innate ability. Can I use this ability in the battle for the other personality?
Maybe.
From the FAQ at http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ccg/faq.html:
] Q: The rulebook says Battle and Open actions can both be used ] during battle, but it also says they might not be allowed. ] That's confusing! How can I tell when I can take an action ] and when I can't? ] ] A: During an attack, every Battle and Open action is checked ] against two special rules, called the Rule of Presence and the ] Rule of Relevance. If the action fails either check, it's not ] legal. In a nutshell, these two rules basically say, "You can't ] take a Battle or an Open action unless both it and you are ] somehow involved in the battle going on right now." That's all ] there is to it, really. The rest is nitty-gritty details ] defining exactly what "involved" means.
Looking at the Gold rulebook and the latest rulesheet, you satisfy Presence if you have a unit in the battle already or the action you want to use will give you one there, and you satisfy Relevance if the action adds something to the battle or if it comes from, targets, or affects something already in the battle or the battle itself.
You have a Personality in the battle, so you have Presence. You want to use an Open action possessed by a Personality outside the battle on the first one. That almost certainly either targets or affects it (or both), so that gives you Relevance. Without knowing exactly what it is you're trying to do, I'd have to say there's a very high chance it's legal.
