Rules for 20 April 2003

Zen Faulkes, sent 20 April 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

rules query- open cards

Now, my call in the tourney was that [Ruins of Isawa Castle] could NOT be used to get this kiho [Mercy Shrouds the Earth] after the Deadly hit the table, and the rulings support it:

"Ruins of Isawa Castle

* May not get a kiho that destroys a terrain during Deadly Ground or Night Battle. [Reversal; JA, 25 June 2001]"

I guess I should add "or negates" to the archive ruling above. The ruling in the Archive is still correct, and the box power can't be used.

Some Rules Questions

My opponent assings no defense. I play Volcanic Fields. I can't destroy something, because no one is there. Can my opponent use Volcanic Terrain?

Yes. Presence and Relevence is required for taking Battle actions, but the Battle action is putting the terrain into play. Once the card is legally in play, resolving its effects may not require Presence or Relevance.

Superior Stance - Is it an effect of refusing that the duel is canceled.

The word "cancel" is not used in the text you typed. So the duel isn't canceled.

Or means this card that I gain 3 Honor, but my opponent, for example, does not loose 5 honor and his personality is dishonored from a Iaijutsu Challenge?

Right (assuming you meant to say "his Personality is *not* dishonored).

rule question

will voitagi gain +1/+1 and +1 ph if he wins a duel vs. a shadowlands personality. [using For the Empire]

Yep. Says so in the Rules Archive (http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/rulings/).

rule question

Zen, isn't this an AAA question?

Er. For those of you playing at home, please do *not* call the Alberta Automobile Association.

I sometimes call questions "triple A," which is an acronym for "Asked, answered, archived." And it's true this question was plainly and simply answered in the Rules Archive. But, "a rule of scholarship, grasshopper, is not to use abbreviations or acronyms without defining them at least once."

Rules question: Scouting Maneuvers

Are multiple copies of Scouting Maneuvers targeting one unit cumulative?

Only if you play them one different units. The card says says, "Once during that Province's battle, you may....", rather than, "Your Personality gains the ability: 'Reaction: Once per Battle...'". If you play it twice on a single Personality, both say the same thing, letting you perform the Reaction once.

A Few Questions

If my opponent's peep with the highest force (or his only peep) is bowed or can't be targetted, can he use Overwhelmed?

No. Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 46.

If my opponent uses Overwhelmed to send 2 of my peeps home, can I stop it with A Test of Courage?

Yes.

[I]f I just have one Test, would it cancel the whole thing or just prevent one unit from going home?

Written right on A Test of Courage: "Cancel the action."

If my opponent uses Overwhelmed and my biggest peep is a Hiruma Tatsuzo with a follower, can I bow my follower to negate the Overwhelmed?

Sure.

I use Isawa Taeruko to cast Purity of the Seven Thunders. My Agasha Oshu has Sezaru's Mask. How much chi would he add to the ritual if I used the Mask?

His current Chi. Sezaru's Mask does *not* say a Shugenja "counts twice," it says he or she acts as "two shugenja." Sezaru's Mask is only useful for rituals that look for the number of warm bodies (e.g., Curse of Weakness, Importune Kami, etc.).
