Rules for 18 April 2003

Zen Faulkes, sent 19 April 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

Some verdicts from the Rules Junta:

If Moto Technique is played during a duel of Force, your Moto Personality may not straighten if the opposing Personality has played any face-down focus cards.

If you take control of another player's Personality with Show of Good Faith, who is shuffled back into your deck, the Personality stays where it is.

Rules for 17 April 2003, Part 2

I think you have the wrong part of the Blade in mind.

Oops. I did. Sorry.

If the "Blade bearer" names 3 as the not-allowed value, and I use Oracle of Fire, and happen to pull a 3, does that 3 count?

No. Blade of Truths says a player "may not play Focus cards," which is what Oracle of Fire does. (By rights, the Blade should prohibit the focusing in the first place.)

Rules questions about Morning Glory Castle

if my dynasty is decked out, can I still use the ability to put a personality in one of my provinces[?]

Sure.

Say I overlayed asako misao with asako misao exp, and he dies. do I have now 2 dead personalities in my discard pile or 1?

Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 41. One.

Zen...imperial messenger ?

If I have imperial messenger in play and straight, I can use its ability on any card that causes an honor loss when brought into play?

Yes. That is what the card says, after all. :)

Superior tatics

Can a defender use superior tatics to move a unit from a battle that have already occur (with no attackers) to the current battle?

Sure.

Rule question about I give You My Name

Short answer: I Give You My Name waives only Gold costs and play restrictions (card text). It does not waive non-Gold costs or entering play effects. The trick is knowing which is which. Remember, things preceded by "to" or "for" are costs.

If I use IGYMN to put a Kyoso no Oni into play, do I lose the honor? Do I have to destroy one of my holdings.

Yes: entering play effects.

If I use IGYMN to put an Oni Spawn into play do I have to bow one of my Oni?

Yes: non-Gold cost.

If I use IGYMN to put a Yamaso no Oni into play (the fortification), I can attach it to any of my provinces, right ?

Yes.

If I use IGYMN to put a Baku no Oni into play, do I lose the 4 honor?

Yes: entering play effect.

Do I permanently change its printed force and chi to half the number of cards in my hand, rounded down?

Yes: entering play effect.

If I use IGYMN to put a Tsuburu no Oni into play, do I have to destroy one of my Personalities?

Yes: non-Gold cost.

Do I lose the 5 honor?

Yes: entering play effect.

is there a difference between 'bring into play', 'put into play', and 'enter play' ?

Not really.

Winds, and their absence

What if I don't use a wind? How does the favor work for me then?

Unless you're using the "historic" Favor rules, all Imperial Favor uses are specified by card text. You can use it for any other card effects whose use requires the Imperial Favor. Other people have mentioned several.

Some of you may be wondering where Jeff Alexander is, since he said he'd be back at the start of the week. Jeff is back at the office, but he's working very hard to meet the deadlines for Winds of Change and Diamond Edition. That's left him too busy for daily rules Q&A, so I'll continue to handle it for a bit. (Jeff and Vaughn are still helping me with the hard ones.)

Although I don't say it very often, I am extremely honoured to serve all you L5R players. Whether it's as archivist or deupty rules guy, I feel lucky to be able to help other players, particularly those of you who are new to the game.
