Greetings,

Rules for 11 April 2003, Part 2

[Birth of the Wolf]

I thought because the linking word "and" was used, and the fact that the first sentence says you "may", that even if you didn't, the hand size increase would go through.

Would this be better phrased:

Each player may discard two cards from his or her hand *TO* permanently raise his or her maximum hand size by two.

Er. No. Sorry I wasn't clearer. It was a bit muddled in my head yesterday.

You're reading the card as: "Each player [may discard two cards from his or her hand] and [permanently raise his or her maximum hand size by two.]" I'm saying it's: "Each player may [discard two cards from his or her hand and permanently raise his or her maximum hand size by two.]"

You are correct that those are two effects and that discarding is *not* a cost. Nevertheless, you have only one choice: either both effects try to resolve, or they don't. If it said, "Each player may discard two cards from his or her hand and *MAY* permanently raise his or her maximum hand size by two," I'd agree with you.

Because discarding isn't a cost, you *can* increase your hand size if you have one or two cards in your hand and discard them. But you can't just leave 8 cards sitting in your hand and have your hand size increase anyway.

ruling: Cut and shuffle

When a game is about to begin, and your opponent offers his deck for a cut, can you riff/shuffle it before you cut?

From the tournament rules, a.k.a. Code of Bushido, at http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ccg/code_of_bushido.html

The Duel, point 5: "Each player shuffles both their Dynasty and Fate decks and presents them to his or her opponent for further shuffling or cutting."

[Takes Deputy Rules Guy hat off]

Just because the tournament rules say you *can* do something doesn't mean that you always *should*.

Many players are very touchy about other people shuffling their cards, particularly riffle shuffling. And with good reason. Yes, riffle shuffling is the fastest and most effective way of randomizing card order, but hard shuffles damage cards. I could imagine a player deliberately abusing the rule above to upset his opponent.

Notwithstanding the rule above, I reckon if there is contention over shuffling, it's best to let the judge decide if the amount of shuffling is adequate, or let the judge shuffle.

Personally? I'd concede a game before I'd let someone riffle shuffle a deck of mine with sets of foils and a few Heroes of Rokugan cards in it.

Rules for 11 April 2003

(I'm playing Crane and), I Play Arrival of the Emerald Champion, I Play Make Your Choice on the Emerald Champion, I kill the Emerald Champion with an action like say TDWWM, I manage to get the Personality into a Province during the battle. When the battle ends what happens to the Emerald Champion?

This one (precedent: Hoshi Tadao):

the Discard from play effect on the original AotEC card kick in while the personality is in the Province?

Gold Edition rules, pg. 43: "Effects on a card do not end prematurely if the card is destroyed, discarded, or even sent back into its owner's hand or deck. They last as long as they would have, had the card remained in play." You can consider "Provinces" now added to that list.

Rules question

From the Rules archives it seems that Agasha Hamanari can cancel a Superior Tactics cause the card satisfy the rule of relevance.

Correct.

Rules Question

Can a monk cast a kiho while Solar Eclipse?

Yes (unless said Monk also had the Shugenja trait).

I put the Ring of Earth into play with Hoshi Tadao´s innate ability. Then I change the Ring of Earth with Ring of Fire by using Finding the Harmony . What happens at the beginning of my turn two turns after with the Ring of Fire?

Heh. See above question on Arrival of the Emerald Champion, and the Rules Archive entry on Hoshi Tadao (http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/rulings/). Whatever was going to happen to the Ring, still happens. Where is is doesn't matter.
