rule question

Can I play dark ring of water if I win an ambush? Destorying the opposing army without assigning that unit.

You cannot. The units are considered to have been assigned.

Rule of Presence

Earlier today I ran into an interesting issue: I defend, my opponent Sneaks, Mushins, Plays Street to Street, then Blackened Skies. I lose everything but my archers. I'm assuming I have presence still as it only requires a unit, but I just wanted to double check.

You do not have Presence. You need a unit. With Street to Street in effect, "free-floating" Followers are not in units.

if you attach a badge of purity to a Lion (here I go now) and tac a burning your essence to said personality, to I get to cancel the chi loss or is it a cost of playing the card?

I am going to answer this one in general terms so people stop asking me about particular cards.

GE rulebook p. 39:

] For sets starting with the Fire & Shadow set, only something ] described as a cost or something followed by "to" or "for" is ] a cost.

So unless a card says you need to lose Chi or lower your Chi in order to play a card or create an effect, the loss of Chi is not a cost. Negating it with Badge of Purity will not cancel the action.

Some rules questions..

There is a In Time of War in play. I begin at 0 honor points, and gain 6 honor by 3 Santified Temples. In time of War caps it, so I am at 5 honor. Making some horrible mistake I lose 25 honor in that turn.

Would I A) lose by dishor before In Time gives me back my honor point. B) be in -19 honor.

Again with In time of War, I use Yojiro´s exp 2 ability to jum from say -10 honor back to my original 3 (I am playing Shadowed Tower). Can I gain Sith santifieds 6 more (to 9 ), or I am capped to 3, since it is more than 5 points higher than my original -10?

Your cap is -5. Your honor can't go up past that. Only down.

The Persuasion card says: Political Limited: Force a target player to discard a Fate card. Lose 2 Honor.

Can I use it to (i hope it has more than one use): a) discard the top card of his fate deck?

No.

b) discard a random card of his hand?

No.

c) If i know his hand (ninja spy, shadow stronghold, emperors udnerhand) discard a card of mi choice?

No. The player targeted choses, and the card comes from her hand.

The Curse of weakness spell says: Maho Ritual Limited: Bow this Shugenja and any number of additional Shugenja to target an equal number of units. Until the start of your next turn, effects that would bow cards in those units destroy the cards if they are already bowed. Lose 3 Honor.

Suppose I target all my opponents personalities. In his turns, he attacks and I use the Yogo Towers ability to bow some of them. Then I play torrential rain, making them go home bowed. Would the already bowed be destroyed?

It looks that way.

The same with refugees, block supply lines, etc. etc. etc.

An the last one: Assuming all of my opponets personalities were targeted by With Curse of Weakness can I use this two cards during a battle:

I Play Suspended Terrain Text Delayed Terrain Battle: Bow all units in this battle when the Resolution Segment ends, an effect that cannot be prevented. The units cannot straighten during their controller's next Straighten Phase.

Then

Fight to the setting sun: Reaction: Play this card when a Resolution Segment in which you had units ends. All units in the battle will bow as if they were attacking units.

To destroy all his personalities at the battle?

Yes.

Rules Q [Jeff]

Hello again. Another question from H&E for Jeff. Tashishai has the Dragon Clan Ryu trait. Okay, fine. She also has the Dragon Emissary trait. The Dragon Clan and the Dragon traits are different (e.g. Flight of Dragons, etc.). Does the Dragon Emissary trait differ from the Dragon trait? Or is she affected by cards which affect any Dragon ("this does not include Dragon Clan Personalities unless they are also considered a Dragon.")?

"Dragon Emissary" is not a faction alignment. It counts as two different words. Tashishai is a Dragon.

What is printed?

Can i get a detailed explaination of what is considered printed?

"Printed" means printed, on the card, in ink. Effects that add or remove traits or that modify stats do not change the printed traits and stats of a card unless they explicitly say so.

Copy?

Copying a stat means setting its new current value to the current value of some other stat. If your current total Force is 3 and I copy it, my current total Force becomes 3 as well. And it really is my new grand total -- I do not add any of my current bonuses to it again.

Switching?

Switching is two simultaneous copies.

Re Regions

If i attack shadowlands marsh and destroy as a battle action does the -2f still stay in effect?

No.

When does the effect of such regions take effect and end. Ex. Moat, Temple of new Tao, Shadowlands Marsh. Thanks Again

These are continuous modifiers. They apply as long as their conditions are met and end the moment they are no longer met or the card creating them leaves play.

Re Regions

Or how about it you bow it with the Golden Obi? I think the force penalty DOES stay in effect with it bowed ... right?

Traits are not neutralized when the card they're on is bowed. [GE p. 24] Bowing a Shadowlands Marsh doesn't turn off the penalty.

By the way, you cannot bow it with the Golden Obi. The Golden Obi can only bow an opposing card. Cards attached to a Province are NOT in the defending army and are not opposing cards in the attacking army.

rules questions: regions / focus

1. When you play cards in a duel as "focus", what happens to them next? Are they discarded or do they return to the owner's hand?

They are discarded when the duel ends.

2. What happens when you reveal a region card in a province where there's already a region? Does the new region replace the old one? Is it discarded?

If a Region is revealed in the Events Phase that cannot attach to its Province for any reason, it simply stays in the Province. You may discard it voluntarily during your End Phase that turn, as you can with all face-up Dynasty cards in your Provinces. You are also allowed to keep it there, in hopes it may become legal to play on later turns.

Naval Invasions Rules Question

Does Barricades allow the defender first action during Naval invasions?

Yes. It does not stop the other restrictions due to making a Naval invasion from applying. Note that the Naval army's leader does not have to declare the battle a naval invasion if he does not want to.

One little tidbit about Satomi she is fighting with two weapons and I recall that there was going to be an effort to make sure that if the art showed them fighting with two weapons or they were on a horse they would have appropriate traits.

That was back in the days of WotC, when A) the art director was also the creative director, and B) the art director worked exclusively on L5R.

Question for Jeff

Say for instance I'm playing Morning Glory Castle. I play Jotei. I Oath him or tell him to "Make the Choice". Ok so he is now a Phoenix. He dies. I bring him back on my turn. Ok now here is the question when Jotei comes into play - How much Honor do I gain? 4 as per card text? Or 8 as per Rulebook + Card Text?

His own trait gives you a flat 4, and paying full price for an aligned Personality gives you his Personal Honor, which is another 4. These are two separate gains...though note that Proposal of Peace and Slander will negate both of them.

About no Hiding Place. Does this card work with the spell Arrows of Purity, since No Hiding Place specifies that the ranged attack come from one card, and Arrows of Purity is a ranged attack coming from 2 or 3 cards? Thank you!

Arrow of Purity comes from one card: the one that the card text says performs it. No Hiding Place should probably have specified "an uncombined ranged attack".

Question for Jeff A.

After the event " an empty victory " resolves, for the next two turns can I legally declare an attack and not send any units even if I have units I could send.

"Until your Events Phase two turns from now, if a player has one of the two highest Family Honor totals (or is tied for the highest) when his or her Attack Phase begins, he or she must assign at least one unit to attack another such player."

The card says you have to assign at least one unit. I think the answer is self-evident.

How does Mirumoto Tachiyama's ability work?

Does his force and chi bouns decrease as your opponent loses cards?

Yes. His bonuses recalculate any time the size of your opponent's hand changes.

Rules Questions

1) I defend with Togashi Mitsu and the attacker plays an entrapping terrain. Does Mitsu bow after the terrain resolves?

No. Entrapping Terrain stops the regular battle resolution bowing from happening.

2) Togashi Mitsu is attacking me, with 5 fire tokens, I defend with Akodo Tadenori and play Honor is My Blade. Does Tadenori gain 7 force or 2, likewise does Mitsu lose 7 or 2?

You switch their total Forces. Before the card, Mitsu is 7F and Tadenori is 0F. After it, Mitsu would be 0 and Tadenori would be 7. [GE p. 32]

3) If I focus a Strike of Flowing Water and then on my next opportunity to focus or strike, I play a Strike with No Thought, does that count as 4 or 2?

4) I challenge a random personality to a duel in a battle. Can I use Yoshi's ability after the foci are revealed if he is not in the battle?

Neither the original nor the Experienced Togashi Yoshi need to be in the same battle. The original Togashi Yoshi's Reaction must be used before the first focus, so it can't be used this late in the duel.

5) Does a Bend Like a Reed count as +4 for a personaility with double chi? Likewise does a Strike with No Thought count as +4 for a personality with double chi?

Yes, yes (sort of -- it's not really +4, it's +2 twice).
