Jeff Alexander, sent 4 April 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

No, this message didn't get hung up on the mailing list server. I'm behind by a couple of days.

Question for the Diamond Speculators

Well gold edition wraps there is a very good chance that we'll have resolution to the main story arc. So we'll find out who is emperor/ess and the remaining winds will be kind of defunct. They will still be kicking on (well some of them will I am sure) but they won't wield as much power as they do now. So what I want to know is, will the favour be still wind orientated in diamond?

Yes.

<< That's an important question. For the sake of balancing the fundamental rules of the game and keeping things the way they were before this formally became a cost reduction, I'd have to rule that the 2-gold Faction discount only applies to that one purchase.

Jeff, How does this effect the Alliance event

It does not affect it at all.

and also, does that mean I can not bring dead or discarded personalities back into play from my dynasty deck or provinces and get honor for them again?

Why would you think that?

FOU rulesheet:

"If you bring into play a Personality with your Faction's trait, you may either lower his or her Gold cost by 2 or add his or her Personal Honor to your Family Honor just before the Personality enters play."

That cost reduction (and that one alone) lasts until the Personality is bought, not until the end of the turn. That's all that has changed. If the Personality ends up in a Province again, you once more have the option of lowering her cost or gaining honor.

Okay, stop. The archive entry is not for the Experienced version of Hitomi Reju. That ruling does not necessarily apply to that version.

Granted, although the only difference between the wording of the traits is "Whenever" instead of "If",

That's why I said "necessarily". All I had seen at that point was that a ruling for a different version of Reju was being used. I didn't yet know how similar they were or whether it would apply anyway. I DID know that we'd had a lot of problems with experience level confusion like this with Hoshi Wayan in the past, to the point where I've asked Zen to clearly relable the Archives, and I wanted to caution people about avoiding that mistake.

Toshimofo no Shiryo - Spoiler stuff, you know, in case you haven't seen it.

Toshimoko no Shuryo reads, "No Reactions can be made to a challenge, refusal, or duel involving this personality except reactions that cancel the action or negate the challenge or duel.".

I assume this turns the personality into Yokuan, correct?

Correct.

Hida Sakamoto

Just a quick question, Hida Sakamoto says that he gains +1/+1 in a battle or duel when opposing a crane personality. If Sakamoto is in a battle against a crane personality, making him a 4F/4C, and the crane player then starts a duel against Sakamoto does he gain another +1/+1, making him 5F/5C, since he is now in a battle against a crane and a duel?

No. He either gains the bonus or he doesn't.

and does he keep the bonuses for the rest of the battle assuming there still is a crane alive in the battle.

If he is still opposing at least one Crane Clan Personality, the bonus would stay.

OK, let's make things clear for me : 2-Gold cost for faction is always applicable once rigth (I mean, if I bring a personality into play multiples times a turn, I only reduce the cost once. Example : Nishiko cost 7 so 5 for a Dark Path of Shadow, but If I bring it back again later in the same turn it's still 7 so 5 for a Dark Path of Shadow)

Right.

But if I reduce the cost of a personality to 0 via cost reduction (Toturi XP3 reduce the cost of a samurai to 0 for example) or I reduced the cost by 4 via a Hiruma Dojo for a samurai, the effect last until the end of the turn. In the Bayushi Hisa XP3 example , he cost 9, so 7 for a Scorpion Player, if I bow 2 Hiruma Dojo to reduce his cost to 1, 0 with in clan reduction.

Right.

I bring him into play as explained above. He dies during the same dynasty phase I bring him into play. Just before he dies he goes to replace a Dynasty card. I want to bring him back into play, still during the same Dynasty Phase, what is his cost?

A) 9, 7 in clan B) 1, 0 in clan C) You're not Leon, but get off my list.

B). Cost reductions from Hiruma Dojo et al last all turn, and cards remember what happened to them no matter where they go.

So, then, I can use Tsuruchi Technique or Arrows from the Woods with Daidoji Rekai xp2's Ability to make a Ranged 3 attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks to increase the RA strength, as it does not count as combining?

Right.

It's actually quite simple. "Combining" is when you take several separate ranged attack actions on different cards and use them all at the same time to add their strengths together into one single ranged attack. "Modifying" is when someone makes a ranged attack and then you change it, including making it stronger or weaker or changing its target.

Question for Jeff A.

1. Can a " test of courage target the same peep in a battle twice" ? does it target?

A Test of Courage targets one of the Personalities about to leave the battle, by MRP. It may not be played twice on the same Personality in one turn by the same player.

2.For the purposes of destroying the Lesser Shrine for taking an action that causes an honor loss. Does seppuku count as taking an action, as it say in the rulebook that it is not a reaction.

The kind of seppuku that all Samurai are able to do is not an action, no. Furthermore, seppuku does not cause an honor loss, so it would not hurt the Shrine that way either. Seppuku only modifies losses.

Note that the Lesser Shrine does not say "Destroy Lesser Shrine if you take an action that causes you or modifies an Honor loss." It says "Destroy Lesser Shrine if you take an action that causes you an Honor loss, even if the loss is modified." What that means is the Shrine will still die if you cause yourself a loss but then negate it, reduce it to 0, or redirect it to another player.

Question for Jeff

Show of Good Faith (R Action [FOU] SG): 4G 4Fo * Political Limited: Bow one of your Courtiers to take control of another player's Personality until the end of the turn. You may not declare an attack or move cards or tokens to or from that Personality while he or she is under your control.

If you somehow gained permanent control of the opponent's character (by using Bane of the Anvil, or something else) after you use SoGF on him, can you declare attacks for the rest of the game?

"You may not declare an attack...while he or she is under your control." You cannot attack until the stolen Personality leaves play or leaves your control.

White Guard Question for Jeff

Is this card on the AEG site correct? I have heard 2 different answers. One is hat in fact it is a 3Force 7 Gold 2 Focus follower. The other is, well that. Which is correct?

The better version was correctly identified as an April Fool's joke. 7 gold, 3 Force is the real one.

Rules Questions.

(1)When playing Engage the Enemy, can you target a personality with an unbowed item and no followers, bow the item and the personality with the same Engage the Enemy? It doesn't say bow two consecutive things, so I assumed that you had to have two legal targets when playing the card.

The bowing is not consecutive. Both targets have to be legal at the outset. You cannot bow an Item and then bow its Personality.

(2) Can you use Corruption's Price when a shadowlands holding comes into play?

No. It has to change from bowed to unbowed. Cards are neither bowed nor unbowed while not in play.

Way OT - Konami Code (was - Re: [L5R-CCG] Clans Shirts? )

Actually it was B, A, B, A in some of their later games I never understood why they changed it in some of them. By the way, speaking of games, when the heck is AEG going to get off their butt and make L5R the video game and even L5R the movie?

We can't make an L5R movie. Toshiro Mifune is dead.

Question on The White Guard [Jeff]

The White Guard's Fear effect may only target Infantry cards. Personalities and Followers without the Cavalry Trait are considered to be infantry. Or does this Follower specifically refer to "Infantry" by means of the Foo rule? Because it could easily be read as either (kind of like Dragon/Dragon Clan). I will assume that it is referring to cards which are "Infantry" via the Foo rule (rather than merely lacking the Cavalry Trait), because the word Infantry is capitalized, rather than lowercase. Which is it?

"Infantry" is a game term with a definition. [GE pp. 51 & 73] When a word has a definition, keywords don't matter. [p. 33] Capital letters don't change anything. A card like "Mounted Infantry" is not an infantry card and will not be bowed by White Guard.

An Old Question revisited

Shinjo Leon (with his three force), sits unopposed at 5F province, and plays Rend the Soul.

Rend the Soul relevant text: "If that personalities army wins this battle, the battle is tied instead. Your army cannot destroy provinces this battle."

Part the First: The battle then resolves. Does he tie with a nonexistant army? If so, what happens?

There can only be a win, loss, or tie if there are armies on both sides. [GE p. 58]

He then superior tactics into another batle (which has a 1F opposing unit), and lets *this* battle end. In the next battle, no actions take place.

Well, he can't SupTac AFTER the first battle resolves, because he's no longer in a Province. Let's say he does this before the end.

Part the Second: Does Shinjo Leon take a province. Is it a tie. Both?

Leon has 8F. He destroys the Province. Again, it is not a tie. There are no Rend the Soul restrictions on this new battle.

Part the Third: Does the answer change if goes home from the first battle (if home he does go), and comes back with Rallying Cry + Northern Provinces of the Moto

The answer does not change. This is a different battle, so none of Rend the Soul's restrictions apply.

Question for Jeff A.

Can a Test of Courage cancel a Torrential Rain? How about a Bridged Pass?

Reactions that respond to units leaving a battle cannot react if the units are moving because their battle ended prematurely.
