A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Deck Backing

Oooh! That sounds like a great idea. Is this legal?

Um...no. Paint cracks when the cards bend.

post for 27 March 2003

Since the personality I played SOGF is now under my control and is a crab with the Yu trait (follow me on this one) and I have Kisada's Shrine in play and straightened, after I sacrifice said personality to the anvil, would said personality return to my home bowed under my permanent control or revert back to its original players home?

You are the last person to bring it into play. You are its controller. Also, the restriction against attacking wore off as soon as it died.

Does this ruling go against the Togashi Tadao ruling that no matter where the ring is when the time limit is up, it goes back into the deck? Or is the wording different enough?

Tadao says where the Ring goes when his effect wears off. Show of Good Faith does not -- the change in control merely ends. This does not necessarily send it back to where it was stolen from. It lets control revert to whoever would control it if it weren't for Show of Good Faith.

Rules Question

Phoenix Player Morning Glory Castle Say I have a personality with 2C, and I attach the new follower Zashiki Warachi. Use the action personality goes to 2C-2C = 0C so dies immediatly. If I put here back in one of my province, do I win the PH before she dies again being 0C?

Yes.

Rules Question

There's an interesting question... can you legally bring someone into play that you know will die immediately?

Yes, you can.

Rend the soul preview...

one question though....If someone was to use this in a duel, but it becomes out tied anyway, can you bend like a reed?

You can play Bend Like a Reed, yes, but you will still tie instead of win if your Chi is higher.

and if not, what is the point of the duel focus boost?

It lets you come from behind and tie, on a card that on the whole is not strictly better than Focus or Karmic Strike.

Rules Question:

Honor's Lesson Dojo: Unique. Reaction: Bow after all players pass consecutively in a battle and before delayed Terrains resolve to perform a Battle or Open action.

Armed and Ready: Reaction: Play at the start of a Resolution Segment to straighten all your Personalities at this battle with a Weapon or an Armor (or both).

My question is, does one have to be played before the other? The rulebook says (from what I was able to find, anyway) that the resolution segment starts as soon as both players pass, so it looks to me like they trigger at the same time. But I'm still not sure, so what's the word?

The Resolution Segment doesn't start when all players pass. The Battle Action Segment ends, with Delayed Terrains resolving immediately beforehand (not simultaneously) [FOU rulesheet]. Honor's Lesson Dojo must be used first.

Badge of Purity

Badge of Purity

Will not attach to a Shadowlands Personality. Reaction: Bow Badge of Purity before this Personality receives a Chi penalty to negate the effect or destroy the token creating the penalty.

VS

choke the soul "Limited: Bow this Shugenja and destroy this Spell to target a Personality. Until that Personality leaves play, he or she permamently has -2C immediately before bowing as the cost of an action. If the Personality dies, cancel that action."

contemplation of Osano-wo Open: Bow this Shugenja to make all players draw one card or to make all players discard one Fate card of their choice. This Shugenja loses 2 Chi permanently.

Drain soul Maho Open: bow this shugenja to bow a personality with less chi. This shugneja permanently loses chi equal to the difference between thatpersonalities chi and his or her own. You may not take this action during a battle. Lose 2 honor.

and with the new follower shashiki warashi

what happend with this chi loses when this Penalty is permanently if i use the Badge of Purity?

The Chi loss on all these cards is an effect. It would be negated. Everything else would still happen.

can is use Badge of Purity with Bayushi Yogiro exp2 to raise the family honor and don't lose chi?

No. That IS a cost: "permanently lower Yojiro's Chi by 1 TO ..." If you negate it, you either have to pay it again or let his action be canceled.

Focus 5

When do you figure which army counts as "that Personality's army"? When you play the card, or at resolution?

At resolution.

No Hiding Place. [Jeff Please]

Now I have 2x No Hiding place in my hand and I control a Shugenja with Fires From Withing Attached. Can the Shugenja, when attacking, target 2 personalities in the defender's home if I use 2 No Hiding Place when he bows for 2 consecutive attacks?

Yes.

Rule question.

Does winning a battle include destorying a persons province or army?

"Winning a battle" means having a higher total army Force than an opposing army of at least one unit during the Resolution Segment. Destroying an opposing army due to a tie in Force is not winning, nor is destroying a Province when there is no defending army.

If yes, I have a question about rend the soul.

Mat sends 3 units to province A Player B defends with one unit.

If mat plays rend the soul on one personality and then moves that personality out of the battle will the battle not be tied because the personalty targeted wtih rend the soul is not in the battle?

It can win now instead of just tie. "That Personality's army" will change if the Personality moves. It's different from "your army" in the next sentence.

If mat has force enought to take his oppoenents province now, will the clause that this province can't be destoryed clause still work for that battle because the text links it to the battle it is played in but not the personality?

That clause stays in effect on the current battle no matter what moves where.

Rend the Soul - Rules Question

I know this is going to come up sooner or later so I may as well ask it now. If Doji Reju (any version) wins a duel in which he focused Rend the Soul, does he win or is it a tie?

This sounds like the Hida O-Ushi Exp2/Heavy Shadow of Fear ruling. Both their traits trigger once, then stop.

If Reju is ahead in Chi (or whatever stat is used in the duel), Rend the Soul makes it a tie, then Reju turns it back into a win.

If, however, it's truly a tie, then Reju turns it into a win, then Rend the Soul turns it back into a tie.
