Jeff Alexander, sent 1 April 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

MGC + Shamate Pass question

Does Shamate Pass work on Personalities placed in a province by Morning Glory Castle? In other words, do such Personalities count as being "revealed"?

No and no. A card already in the Province must go from face-down to face-up.

Moonblade

Was Katana of the moon supposed to be unique?

No.

Easy Questions for Jeff

1) Scorpion player Bob attaches the Celestial Sword of the Scorpion to Yogo Tjeki. Scorpion player Freddy casts Masters Imprisoned on Tjeki. Freddy then attaches the Celestial Sword of the Scorpion to Kwanchai. Next turn, does Tjeki come back? If so, does he have the sword with him?

Yes, no.

2) I'm playing Morning Glory Castle. a) I use Asahina's Blessing on Shiba Tsukune. She dies and goes to the top of my deck. I then use Quest for Guidance. Does Shiba Tsukune go into my discard as honorable dead allowing me to bring her back?

If the last reason you put the card in your discard pile was by "discarding" it, she is not Honorable Dead.

b) My opponent is also playing Phoenix. I target my opponent's Shiba Tsukune with the Asahina's Blessing and then Quest for Guidance. Does his Shiba Tsukune now go into my discard as my honorable dead?

She goes into your discard pile, but not as Honorable Dead.

3) I use Path Not Taken on Bend Like A Reed.

Leon, get off my mailing list.

Blessing of Isawa goes off and I attach the Path Not Taken to personality Bobby(after playing when a personality strikes). Later, Freddy is in a duel and my opponent strikes. I use Bobby's ability to "Play this card when a personality strikes...". Does Bobby disappear to my discard pile as he was just "played"? What if it was Bobby in the duel and he does disappear... who wins the duel???

There is no difference between Action cards that needlessly remind you to "play" them when you play them and ones that don't. Bobby will not disappear.

Bobby, Freddy, and Hantei

So, it's Bob's turn and Fred plays Plans within Plans. Bob launches a Shiro Matsu attack against Fred and invites Sam to ally. As Fred's first action, he targets one of his defending personalities with Ambush and targets Bob's Hantei 39th (12th Black Scroll has been used). Hantei 39th dies and Bob loses. Do we still resolve the Shiro Matsu attacks?

Forwarded to the Rules Team. This question is actually rather important. People don't get Hantei the 39th-ed out of the game during battles, but they can be dishonored out.

Rules Question - Relentless Assault

card says that his force become twice his printed force. Is this considered a bonus ?

If his total Force goes up, then yes. [GE p. 31]

In search of the future says to lower to 0 all foce bonuses. Would the beserker with Berserker Rage be affect by in search of the future ?

If Berserker Rage increased his total Force, he would.

The way I see it, berserker rage is not a force bonus, it is setting a new force value for the personality, similar to personalities who copy another one's strenght, they are not getting a force bonus.

Well, the rulebook would disagree with you. Sorry. :)

Also, if the battle is in a province with Akui Cliffs, would in search of the future prevent the loss for all with less than 4 chi ?

Not at all. A loss is not a bonus. It's a penalty. In Search won't change it.

Rules Question - Ashura

1) If I play TDWWM on my Ashura, I destroy my Ashura as a cost. Which effect happens next:

a) TDWWM finishes resolving, and then Ashura's trait kicks in; or b) Ashura's trait kicks in, and then TDWWM finishes resolving.

b.

Either way, I get to destroy two Personalities if there are two legal targets right?

Right.

2) I play Overwhelmed on my Ashura...same question

a) Overwhelmed finishes resolving and then Ashura's trait kicks in or b) Ashura's trait interrupts the Overwhelmed.

b.

Hesitation question

If I play hesitation in my opponents turn during his action phase, he then passes on his next action (coz he has to), then I pass. Does that end the action phase for him?

If it's a two-player game, this ends the Action Phase.

Obsidian and Jade question

So, here's my questions: Can I play multiple copies of Obsidian and Jade on one of my persnalities? Can I play Obsidian and Jade on one of my personalities that already has the Shadowlands trait?

Yes and yes.

P.S. Obsidian and Jade effectively turns one of your personalities into the Crab Clan Oni, not into Okura no Oni, right?

Right.

Forgotten Tomb Questions

What exactly consitutes a full turn with Forgotten Tomb?

Count only your own turns. [GE p. 39]

Also, Can you place personalities under it when it is bowed?

It's a trait, not an action. [GE p. 33] Traits are not rendered inactive when a card is bowed. [ibid.] So, yes. You may bring cards into play from it while it is bowed, too.

Make a wish questions.... (hope they haven't been asked & answered already) [AEG]

Like, can I play with a torn card? I mean, if I carefully tape it back together, or glue it, and play in sleeves? I've seen people play with cards with corners missing, folded cards, proxies (Thundercats come to mind) - all in sleeves of course - so why not a torn card?

Technically, torn cards, altered cards, and proxies are not permitted in sanctioned tournaments. Tournament Organizers are free to change the rules if the changes are announced at least 30 days ahead of time. Even so, I would strongly urge them not to allow the same Make A Wish card to be used more than once per tournament.

Secondly, are these going to be available indefinitely? I mean, should I buy enough *now* for every tourney I plan to play in in Diamond, or will I be able to buy them as I go along over the next few years?

If the current run sells out, we will print more at the first convenient moment. That's not to say that if we eventually run out, say, another eight years down the road, we'll make more.

Questions for Jeff

A couple of odd questions. 1. Can Agasha Hamanari react to an Avoid Fate being played? (This on my own turn & on my event)

Yes.

2. Can Mujina Gang, when being played, discard the Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng?

Yes. And since the Mask isn't being destroyed, the Personality does not die.

A few questions

In a game of scorpion vs scorpion player, things get like this: Player A has Kiyo EXP with celestial sword of the scorp and Paneki with a follower. Player B has Paneki EXP. Both players are at 2 province left. Player A attacks. Player B defends on the other of his provinces. Player A destroys province and his personalities bow. (He has Call to Arms and gold). Now it becames tricky: Can player B, in the resolution of his battle take, use Paneki EXP hability to get Kiyo EXP with the sword, bowed, in his battle ?

Yes.

Player B has Presence (he has a unit in the battle).

Player B has Relevance (he is using the action of a card in the battle, and he is also moving something into the battle).

Paneki Exp. says "this battle" and is in the battle being resolved.

Paneki Exp. can target a Scorpion Clan Personality belonging to any player, and move them into the current battle no matter where they are. [card text]

Another one. Lion vs Shadowlands. Lion attaches the celestial sword to one of his personalities. The Shadowlands reacts with Muchitsujo, and attaches the sword to one of his shadowlands personalities. Can he do that ?

No. The Sword must go on a different Personality that the Lion player could have played it on originally. [GE p. 47]

Last one, just a confirmation: A ninja personality with poison dartgun and Tsuruchi Tech, can blow up any personality with up to 5F even if he has followers, isn't it?

Yes. The Poison Dartgun does not have a restriction against being modified by other cards, and Reactions like the ones on Tsuruchi Technique and Arrows From the Woods that increase ranged attack strength are not the same as combining ranged attacks.

Ok Jeff then what if, I am facing Reju xp2 in a duel. I focus Kharmic Strike, then I focus Rend the Soul. What would happen if my personality would have won the duel?

Karmic makes it a tie. Reju makes him win. Rend makes it a tie.

At worst as both texts appear to be Traits the active player should be able to decide the order of the effects - each only resolving once.

Yes, but how can an "If you win..." effect resolve if you aren't winning?

Golden Obi + To do what we must

Okay, this probably was asked before, but I want to be sure...

Can I use the reaction of the Golden Obi of The Sun Goddess to avoid the destruction of the personality I sacrified with To Do What We Must ?

The destruction of the personality is a cost, but the Golden Obi does not prevent the destruction... well, actually it does, but the word "prevent" is not explicitly written on the card, it is written that the obi is "destroyed instead", is it the same ?

Yes, it's the same. The Golden Obi negates the destruction, and in doing so will prevent the cost from being paid and cancel the action unless you go ahead and destroy the Personality anyway.
