Jeff Alexander, sent 28 March 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Anvil of despair and SOGF

Supposing that I play chow of good faith, can I take control of a clan champion even though most say will only join X players when X is the champions clan?

No. You can neither play nor steal a Personality who will not "join" you.

Can I play show of good faith on another players personality, then sacrifice the said personality to the anvil of despair to boost a weapon?

Yes.

Since the personality I played SOGF is now under my control and is a crab with the Yu trait (follow me on this one) and I have Kisada's Shrine in play and straightened, after I sacrifice said personality to the anvil, would said personality return to my home bowed under my permanent control or revert back to its original players home?

You are the last person to bring it into play. You are its controller. Also, the restriction against attacking wore off as soon as it died.

And for the love of all that is holy, supposing that the players personality that I SOGF'ed had the clan sword, and I was sacrificing this person for my own clan sword of the same clan, would the new sword 1) be playable (following the unique rules and timing issues and 2) have the original force and chi bonuses printed on it, PLUS the old force and chi bonuses that the old personality had before being SOGF'ed in his army? And if not, how would this work if it does?

You can't start playing a second copy of a Unique card if there is one already out. The combo doesn't work.

Lastly, just as a reminder for myself, is it true that the courtier and magistrate traits are on in the same??

No. Courtier and Diplomat are the same. [FOU rulesheet]

Old Monk Advisors

I need to know what the Monk Advisor Follower from Scc edition is cable of doing.

If you put it on someone else's Personality, typically nothing. He'll just destroy them with their first Open action, which he can use freely since he's the card's controller.

If you somehow get to use their Reaction, "Once per game, the player who put this card into play may assign this unit as if he controlled the unit, if the player who controls the unit does not assign the unit or tries to assign it to the opposing army. This may result in a player with units on both sides of a battle."

You would take the Reaction as soon as one of those conditions occurs, even if it means assigning the Advisors' unit out of order from the rest of your units.

* Also regarding the play of this card, will it be legal to substitute in additional Make a Wishes for destroyed ones in the course of a tournament?

No. Your deck will permanently shrink upon its use. If your deck falls below the format legal minimum, you are eliminated before the start of the next round, if there is another round.

Aren't you required to use the same deck every round? So if you use Make A Wish, and then are forced to remove it since it has been ripped up and is no longer legal, wouldn't the deck then be illegal?

No. Special allowance will be made.

And thank you to everyone for pointing out it doesn't count towards your deck size. This card really did go through a lot of tweaking, and I don't have a physical copy to look at yet.

Rule Question

This is just a quick question just to make sure I have it right. Tokens are permanent unless the card says specifically otherwise, correct?

Yes. [GE p. 39]

What if the Ambush targets at least one personality in the battle?

*sigh*

Ambush can be legal. Shiro Matsu won't be.

Rules Questions - Part Two

1) If Shrine of the Sun is used to cancel Chrysanthemum Festival and your opponent only has one province left, would he immediately lose the game?

No. The Province is not an "ongoing effect". It will not go away.

2) Defensive Duty comes is used to place a personality into a province that has plain of fast trouble attached, does the personality still die at the end of the battle

He is still "discarded", not destroyed. He will leave play and go to your discard pile, but he will not count as Honorable or Dishonorable Dead, and cards like Kisada's Shrine cannot prevent it.

and does the province still get the bonus even if the personality is in play.

Yes.

3) Are the Shadowlands personalities that are revealed with Tsuno Attack considered Honorable Dead?

If they are destroyed while honorable during the battle, yes. Any that survive and are "discarded" are not.

imperial funeral

Player A have Doji Nagori in play and Player B resolves an Imperial Funeral. Can player A lose some honor, use Nagori and don't lose any honor for Nagori because he is bowed?

No. Player A cannot use Nagori on his own losses. He can only use Nagori on player B's losses. [Nagori card text]

Can Player A react to B Player's honor loss by using a Nagori and thus not lose any honor for Nagori?

Yes, because Imperial Funeral starts with the person who reveals it and it was revealed by Player B. [MRP] If the Funeral had been player A's, the answer would be no because player A would have to make all his bowing choices before player B loses or gains any honor.

Badge of Purity[JEFF]

This seems like a silly question to ask but I like clarity.

Badge of Purity:

It negates the penalty only.

Thoughts on Previewed Cards

All this talk about Matsu Watako and Tireless Assault made me wonder. What is the timing for her to attach the follower to herself? Legal, or too late?

Legal. Targets are chosen before costs are paid.

Also, on an older card. With the terrain Imperial Proclamation, if one of the two people being sent home is kept in due to Test of Courage, is the other one also staying, or still sent home?

A Test of Courage cancels the entire action causing the send-home. [card text] Both units stay.

Can they Confusion the terrain at resolution, or only when it is originally played?

Reactions must be played as soon as the trigger occurs. [GE p. 48] The Favor is discarded when this Terrain is played because it's a cost. Confusion needs to be used then, not later.

Question about Poison Marsh (w/cameos by Bobby and Freddy!)

Poison Marsh

Region * Unique

After each time a personality assigns or moves to attack this Province, give that Personality a -1C Poison token. For the rest of the game, that Personality may, as a Limited action, bow to remove that Poison token.

My question: If Bob assigns Freddy to attack this province, he immediately gets the -1C Poison token. Let's say Bob has Freddy's shugenja buddy Zokusei move the Poison token (w/Sympathetic Energies) to his opponent Fred's personality, Bobby. Who has the ability to bow and remove that particular Poison token?

a) Freddy, because he was the original one to get the token, and thus was given the ability to get rid of that token. b) Bobby, because he now has the token, and the ability to get rid of the token comes with it. c) This is way too much like a Leon question, and thus, I should be dragged out in the street and shot.

Forwarded to the Rules Team. The answer will either be a) or d): Freddy, but he can still only remove it when it's on himself, so neither one can remove it while it's on Bobby.

How to play

Hi, I'm kinda new to this. I have been playing the d20 rpg of L5R, but I really want to learn how to play the card game. Does anyone know how I can get a copy of the rules?

You can find the rules online at http://l5r.alderac.com/ccg/rules.html . The main rules are available in either pretty PDF form or basic HTML. The latest rulesheet addendum is available only in PDF. (PDf files requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view. The Reader program is available for free from http://www.adobe.com for a variety of Windows, Macintosh, and Linux environments.)
