Jeff Alexander, sent 22 March 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

The same old mistake! (Jeff, re: Kanashimi, Stolen Records)

A while back you guys quickly changed the card draw them out when you saw how well it was used in combo with Stolen records. Now, I have to wonder, did you guys purposly overlook that ruling when you made Kanashimi?

Kanashimi costs 12 Gold even in-Clan, causes a large Honor loss, has low stats for its cost, has weak other advantages, is Unique, and can't be drawn directly by other cards. Furthermore, 12 Personalities DO NOT GET PLAYED unless they do something major.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't kanashimis reaction be used when you play draw them out, but instead of all but one of the cards, you nuke their whole hand.

Do you have the right titles? Draw Them Out causes their next five draws from their own card or Stronghold effects to be discarded. Kanashimi makes each draw it responds to cause a discard. They do combine, but in a straightforward way: if your opponent draws a card due to his own cards or Stronghold outside his End Phase, he will discard that card and one other of his choice.

Qs about target

What targets: Badge Of Purity?

The effect it's negating or the token it's destroying.

and Golden Obi (the anti kill part)?

The destruction effect.

and Whistling Bulb Arrow?

The Personality it's on.

Tattooed followers

Can you attach tattoos to tattoed followers?

Point #1: Tattoos are not "attached". They are often left physically on the card they're played on to remind everyone that they happened, but they are technically like most other Action cards: they are played, they have an effect, then they go to the discard pile.

Point #2: There is no general rule against it -- but then, there are no general rules about Tattoo Action cards at all. As a family of cards, all their special rules are on the cards themselves. To date, every Tattoo Action card has only been playable on Tattooed Personalities by its own card text.

Whats the purpose of tattooed folowers other than maybe storyline consequences?

There are a few cards besides the well-known Tattoo Actions that interact with the Tattooed trait. Most of them are in the Open environment.

Ruling Questions

1.) Can Hunted only target samurai? it's worded weird enough that it seems it has to be a misprint but I can't find any official errata...

It does seem to be confused, doesn't it?

I'm going to say read the "target samurai's controller" phrase in the second sentence as "wanted Personality's controller"

2.) Are attacking units bowed immediately after each individual battle, or after the attack phase in general?

After each battle. [GE p. 57]

easy ranged attack question

I dont usually play ranged attacks so this one should be an easy one for those of you that do...

for spells like fire from within or cascading fire... with the consecutive attacks does that mean you can kill a follower in a unit and then kill the personality or do you have to do all your targeting 1st AND then kill things?

Consecutive ranged attacks are targeted and resolved individually, one at a time. You wait until each kills its target (or not) before picking a target for the next.

Ninja Thief reads: "Limited: Move an Item from a Personality to another Personality who can legally attach it. Lose 3 Honor." Moshi Hinome reads:"...Open: Bow Hinome to remove all Aura tokens from a Personality who has at least one and add that number of +1F/+1C Aura tokens, plus one, to another Personality."

Jeff, I'm confused.

Why would Moshi Hinome target first Personality at all? Both action cards are searching and targeting for X. The fact that it happens to be on personality A is merely a necessity of X being in play in the first place.

Hinome has to target some aspect of the source -- otherwise, how would you know what tokens to remove? But she affects all the tokens on the source Personality. That makes that aspect of her action a general effect, and thus non-targeted. The only thing left for her to target is the Personality.
