Jeff Alexander, sent 25 March 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

post for 21 March 2003

Youre right, I mixed the card names up. Can Kanashimi be used to kill an opponents hand if I play stolen records.

Yes.

One Life, One Action

One Life, One Action Reaction: Play this card after another player resolves an Action card from his or her hand. The player cannot play any copy of that Action card for effect for the rest of the game, but the player may still use it for its Focus value.

Q: If the opponent plays an Action card which I cancel with a Reaction from something like Faith in My Clan, Oracle of Thunder, Fall on Your Knees, etc., does that Action card still count as having been "resolved" so that I could also react to it with One Life, One Action to prevent another copy of it from being played for the rest of the game?

Canceled and resolved are mutually exclusive. You cannot play One Life, One Action on a canceled action.

post for 20 March 2003

Deadly Ground prohibits the use of the Drum of Water during resolution.

The same would go for the reaction on Armor of Osano-wo, since Provinces are destroyed during resolution, correct?

Correct. Deadly Ground stops all Reactions taken during the Battle Action and Resolution Segments except those that destroy Deadly Ground.

Tsono Sochi question

Card says Negate all honor gains

does this mean that instead of gaining X honor, you lose X honor ?

No. "Negating" an effect in L5R means preventing it from happening. It does not mean turning a number negative.

Overwhelmed and Targeting...

Yes. The only things Overwhelmed targets at the very beginning are "the" opposing player (that's important -- there is always "the" opposing player, it's "AN" opposing player that may or may not be present) and your own Personality.

Does this mean you have to have a legal target (i.e. an unbowed, targetable personality with the highest force in your army) to even play Overwhelmed?

Yes. [GE p. 46]

A Question About the AEG Guys

Do any of the AEG guys browse the individual Clan mailing lists?

I know Mark Jelfo, Rich Wulf, and I do, as do many of our playtesters, Bounty Hunters, and other associates.

rules question.

"Bringing Cards into Play", p. 25 of the Gold Edition Rulebook says:

'Before using a card, you must bring it into play, observing all restrictions, choosing all targets, and then paying all costs.'

Does that mean that the order of bringing a personality into play is:

1. Bring the personality into play, observing all restrictions. 2. Pay the cost of the personality.

or is it

1. Pay the cost of the personality. 2. Bring the personality into play, observing all restrictions.

1. Satisfy all restrictions and targeting requirements. 2. Pay all costs. 3. Bring card into play.

Rules question...

This came up in a game and I wasn't sure how to rule...

The Dragon player attempts to attach the Dragon Sword without cost to Togashi Hoshi. The Shadowlands player redirects the attachment with Muchitsujo to Rosanjin. So... a) The sword attaches to Rosanjin without cost? b) The sword returns to the Dragon player's hand because costs weren't paid? c) The Dragon player must pay the cost of 8 gold if possible as he has already announced the attempt to attach?

a). Muchitsujo reacts to the attachment, not the targeting. It does not react until all costs have been paid and the Sword is already on its way to the table.

Kyuden Ikoma up on Alderac

This does lead me to another question. In the Herald when talking about re-introducing Mantis, they talked about the number of boxable personalities for each Faction and how each Faction has the same number. Is that number based on the Faction as a whole, as in, if you count every stronghold they have X people total, OR is it there are X boxable people for each stronghold?

There was at least one Stronghold with X first-turn people. The numbers weren't perfectly identical -- Uniques like Rohiteki and Chian skew the count a little.

Military advisor question

Can you use this ability more than once per battle? Can you use the ability once per battle?

It's usable any number of times. All you need is the money to pay for it. Remember, too, that you can't do something like spend 6g for +3F with an ability like this.

Morning Glory Castle Question

Would I may put a personality back in my province if dinasty cards are consumed (I can't refill my provinces)?

You may put the Personality into a Province that does not have a card in it, although you cannot put a Personality into a Province that is not allowed to hold cards (like one with Togashi's Shrine on it). Discarding an existing card is not a cost of the action.

Or if I bringed a region in play this turn in that province (is the province refilled inmediatly)?

Provinces are always refilled immediately at any time they become empty. [GE p. 22]

So, if I don't have any card in this province because of any reason, may I use the Phoenix Stronghold ability?

Yes.

Rules Questions about Kyuden Ikoma [Jeff]

Do canceled action cards go to the discard pile?

Yes.

In particular in relation to Uona Sensei (only affects the opponent if they have her)and Quiet Tombs (affects both players)

These will both prevent the Action card from being retrieved.

What happens if I use Kyuden Ikoma to cancel the Battle action on the Armor of Sun Tao, speicifically

Does the Terrain? a) Go back under the Armor ready for use again b) Get canceled and put aside to be returned to the armor after the Battle c) Get canceled and put aside to be returned to the controlling player's hand at end of turn?

d) Stay in the discard pile because it cannot be "returned" to the player's hand if it was not played from the hand.

This weekend's Rules Questions for Jeff

1. Can you use Code of Bushido when someone refuses an Iajutsu Challenge? It seems to me that the person doing the refusing isn't taking an action...

Code of Bushido is usable if the samurai takes an action OR "creates an optional effect"...such as refusing a challenge. It's usable.

2. Can Agasha Hamanari cancel a Sneak Attack? (ie. is it considered to be "affecting the battle")

Sneak Attack affects the battle. Hamanari can cancel it.

So. For some reason my Shiba Sukune dies a horrible, horrible death. I bow my stronghold and replace one of my provinces with her. I unbow my stronghold by winning a duel with Yasuki Hachi. Turns out that not a turn before, my Shiba Aikune suffered the same dismal fate that Sukune did. I bow my stronghold and replace the Shiba Aikune that is in my honourable dead pile with the Shiba Sukune that I placed in my province just 2 limited actions and a reaction ago. Is my original Shiba Sukune now honourable dead? Or did she stop being honourable dead after I brought her back to life?

Forwarded to the Rules Team.

Jeff, booster/sealed deck question...

When between rounds WHEN specifically is swapping of cards between your deck and your extra cards allowed?

I would expect before your paired up again correct?

Correct.

rule question

poison weapon / kharmic strike question

a 3 chi haigotsu challenges my perosnality to a duel.

they focus a kharmic strike.

I strike and play pw.

Does pw end the duel without resolution saving my personality?

Yes. Poisoned Weapon kills the other Personality in this example as soon as it's played, which is between the strike and duel resolution.

Rules Question

Is Bonds of Fate (played "[d]uring an Action Phase") playable during an Attack Phase created by an Ambush? If so, how about one created by Shiro Matsu?

No and no. You can't be in two phases at once. If it's an Attack Phase, it isn't the Action Phase.

rule question

I play Cowardly Conscripts and assign them as a lone defender. Can I play Overwhelmed?

Yes.

Question for Jeff A.

1. Blessed Dojo + Facing Your Devils.. Does the Shugenja targeted with BD get the +2 Chi bonus during the Duel created by FYD?

Yes.

2. Hamanari + Spirit Guide... If I have a SG attached to AH and I use AH's reaction to cancel an action card, then straighten him with SG, can I use his reaction again during the same turn? (each printed instance can only be used once per turn?)

Each printed Reaction can be used once per TRIGGER, not per turn. Hamanari can be used again on a different Action card.

questions.

* Kanishimi is controled by my opponent and he uses stolen records on me, I start drawing he discarding, if I draw Ring of the Void, can I put it into play before he makes me discard it?.

Yes. The Ring is played when it's in your hand. Kanashimi is used "after" you draw it. [card text]

* Wich player has the first option to play a reaction after an action is played?

GE rulebook, page 48:

] If more than one player wishes to take Reactions at the same time, ] first consider the exact wording of the Reactions. A Reaction taken ] "before" its trigger, for example, is always playable before one ] taken "after" its trigger. If the Reactions have the same wording ] for when they're taken, the chance to take the first Reaction goes ] to the player to the left of the one who caused the trigger. For ] things like the beginning of a phase, treat the active player -- the ] one whose turn it is -- as the one who caused the trigger.

* I controll Jester, and play Iai. Challenge on one of my opponents personalities, he refusees, can I double the lose with Jester?

No. Refusing an Iaijutsu Challenge is neither playing a card nor performing an action. Jester's Reaction can't be used. [card text]

On: Jester

* Bayushi Kwanchai is in play with armor of the mountains in play but outside of the current battle. I play Iaijutsu duel against one of my opponents scorpion personalities, what happens when Kwanchai tries to replace the personality in the duel? (current guesses: it does, but it dosen´t enter the batlle, she can´t because she can´t enter the battle).

Kwanchai does not move when he replaces another Scorpion in a duel. The Armor of the Mountains has no effect on his Reaction. It will work just like it always does.

* When the steel throne wants to use it´s reaction, does it bow the courtier that has it attached, or does it bow itself?

The Throne. (The card says "it". People aren't "it"s.)

* Followers can use their actions if their personalities are bowed?

Yes. [GE p. 24]

( A diplomatic apprentice attached to a bowed personality, for lobbyng attemps?,

That doesn't work because you must target a Personality to bow when you lobby, and you cannot target your own bowed Personalities with your own actions.

or to a Doji Jotaro to dishonor an additional personality? .

That doesn't work because the action is on Jotaro, and actions on bowed cards cannot be used.

A big point I need to make here about Diplomatic Apprentice: it does not have an action. It has a TRAIT that kicks in when its Personality tries to take an action. The rule on page 24 does not apply to Diplomatic Apprentice.

A spearman for a ra 2 attached to a bowed personality in a battle?)

That is legal.

rule question

after I use oracle of voids ability to draw up to 5, do I get to draw one during the endphase? essentially brinning my hand up to 6.

If you choose to use its Reaction before your normal draw, yes. The Oracle can be used at any time "during your End Phase", before or after any other card-drawing effects, and using it does not consume any of your draws.

Rules Question

Does Quiet Tombs stop the Shadowed Towers reaction ability to recycle the action?

I'd say yes. The trait beats the Reaction.
