Jeff Alexander, sent 5 March 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Daigotsu Wind

So it's a lobbying effect that won't trigger effects that would be usuable in a normal favor attempt. No ability to use enough talk, political warfare, scorpion distractor, crane armor, or any other method to cancel or contest it?

Nothing that reacts to a Political action, no. Things that react to lobbying efforts, like The Perfect Gift, are allowed.

corrupt/tainted rule...

I think that part of the problem with the guidelines for tainting/corruption is that they're one-sided; it's easy to find a way to make a clan more corrupt, but there's no simple, reciprocal way to purify it.

Wrong: play the Clan uncorrupt. Simple. Reciprocal.

daigotsu Favor question

Do any of these ways not work for getting or using the imperial favor while having daigotsu as your wind?

"Do any not work"... Great. Now I can't answer "yes" or "no" because it will be confusing.

All these questions are easily answered using the following guideline: when you have Daigotsu as a Wind, your standard lobbying action and your Wind action are not Political, but any other action that involves acquiring or using the Wind remain unchanged. If they were Political actions before, they still are.

Shoguns fealty.

Works for getting the Favor if and only if you're not Shadowlands. [card text] Using the Favor once you have it depends entirely on your Wind.

Selecting the chancelor.

It works for getting the Favor, with or without Daigotsu. Using the Favor depends entirely on your Wind.

lobbyists

Their trait works for any lobbying. Their action is Political and can't be used by most Shadowlands players. Using the Favor depends entirely on your Wind.

show of strength. Private augury Doji tanitsu miya Hatori Soshi kiyo

These cards' actions are Political and can't be used by most Shadowlands players. Using the Favor depends entirely on your Wind.

Daigotsu Wind

Jeff, if for example, you have the daigotsu wind, you're using the imperial palace of fu leng, and you have a 4 force shadowlands personality, but your oponent has a 5 force personality, but less than 15 honor, can you lobby for the favor using your unmodified 15 honor? he has more force than you, so you do not substitute your family honor for force, meaning that you keep your 15 honor...

I mean, are you forced to swap your honor total for your current family honor if it would decrease your total honor (real or virtual/force based)?

If anyone at the table ties or beats you in total printed Personality Force, your true Family Honor is used for all players' lobbying attempts.

If you have the single highest total, that number is used in place of your Family Honor for all players' lobbying attempts.

This effect is not optional.

Card Slots

Does this mean every starter will come with all five winds and if so, will it replace one of the other fixed cards or will be in addition too?

It will be in the fixed section, replacing another card.

Daigotsu Wind

No, it's specificaly noted in the rulebook that anything that asks for a value un a card/token that doies not have a value for it finds 0. If you search for a geisha assasin's PH, you find 0, but in fact it has a - PH.

This is really picking a nit, but it doesn't have a "-". It doesn't have anything at all. (It's still interpreted as a 0 when you need to know what value it has...you got that part right.)

odd question

Little confused on this. Can I play a to the last man and a pick your battles as a reaction to the same battle I am looseing in?

By card wording, Pick Your Battles must be played first ("before your army is destroyed" versus "after a Resolution Segment"). [GE p. 48] Unless you have only one unit in the battle, Pick Your Battles removes To the Last Man's trigger by stopping your whole army from being destroyed. To the Last Man therefore cannot be played. [ibid.]

3 quick questions for the rules team

1. do farmlands count as a farm?

No. You can't yank a part of a keyword out of another keyword.

2. I know that tsuno is a fmily name, but what about naga?

No.

3. does berserker rage count as a force bonus, or just simply an increase in printed force?

Point #1: a brand new increase in Force IS a bonus, by definition. [GE p. 31] Note that a number is not considered to be receiving a new bonus if it's only increasing because an existing bonus got larger or an existing penalty got smaller or ended. [FOU rulesheet]

So, if his total Force is higher after the Rage than it was before, yes, he received a bonus.

Point #2: Berserker Rage does not change the card's printed Force. It changes the card's current Force to a number that is derived from printed Force. [card text]
