post for 11 February 2003

Jeff Alexander, sent 12 February 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Rules Q

Does using Judgement of Toshiken during a duel negate the focus value increase on items for shiryo shinjo players?

It ignores them. Judgement of Toshiken says to use the cards' printed focus values, which Shiro Shinjo does not change [GE p. 32]

A couple more questions about Yu...

1. Just to be absolutely Sure, the use of Yu is a RULEBOOK effect (particularly in terms of Vengeful Dead) right?

Right. [archive]

2. Here's the Situation: A purple army is attacking me en masse, including several personalities and a moto chagatai with the Celestial Sword (force = 12) I am defending with 4 guys, 2 Hida kosho (yu 5) and 2 Hiruma Tatsuzo (Yu 4)

I lose the battle, and all personalities are still present on both sides when the battle ends. Here's the question:

If I use the Tatsuzo's Yu first, destroying 2 4 force personalities, can I then use the Combined Yu of my 2 Hida Kosho's to destroy the Chagatai with the Sword attached (his force should now be 10, though the results of the battle will not change)???

Yes. The destructions caused by Yu are sequential, not simultaneous. [rulesheet] Chagatai's sword bonus would drop every time a Clanmate died.

clan letters

Just wondering if there is an update to when we can expect to see the new letters.

Ray says the ones he's seen on the site are the most recent ones he has.

Gold-Legal Checklist Questions

I've recently been looking on Alderac's website and saw the Kotei tournaments. I became interested in attending one and began thinking about the decks I might build.

I saw the gold-legal checklist (http://l5r.alderac.com/ccg/gold_checklist.html). Somewhere on the website it suggests that all Gold edition cards are Gold-legal. Here, however is a list of Gold-legal cards that do not include a number of the cards from Gold edition (especially a number of them of which I was particularly fond).

So how should I interpret this? Is this card the definitive list?

No. As the website says, that list only covers up to A Perfect Cut.

Can I only play in the Kotei with the cards listed above? Or am I missing something, somehow?

Every new card printed after Gold Edition that's Gold-legal has the symbol on it (save for seven from Dark Allies, which are listed in every rulesheet since Broken Blades as well as possessing the "DA" signifier in the credits line). Since these cards exist only with the bug, you'll know they're legal. That's why we stopped updating the list.
