post for 10 February 2003

Jeff Alexander, sent 11 February 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Week of the Ratling question

This was answered a while ago...we're getting foil Sharp-Sharp Sticks.

Keep in mind, many Ratling players aren't exactly thrilled with this.

1. They're getting an excellent Personality. 2. They're getting a card box that will be in higher demand than the others because it's *different*. 3. No faction got a brand-new, never-before-printed weapon.

False Scroll

False Scroll Reaction: Destroy False Scroll after a player brings a Black Scroll into play from his or her hand to shuffle that Black Scroll into its owner's Fate deck. Limited: Destroy False Scroll to shuffle a Black Scroll into its owner's Fate Deck.

Is it possible to use the False Scroll's limited action to re-shuffle a scroll from the discard pile ?

No. [GE p. 46: "You may only target cards in play."]

rule question

I have several people tell me different things on this.

question 1.

can you tactiction after a test of courage is played on a tactiction?

a) yes.

b) no.

question 2.

can you tactiction after you play inner fire?

a) yes.

b) no.

As has been pointed out already, no and no. Taking the Battle action of discarding a Fate card for a Force bonus targets the Tactician who does it. [GE p. 65]

Region Question.

Alright, second day back on the list and I have another question. Yay. Anyways, my new question deals with regions. I.E. specifically ones that have ablities like Farmlands and Ruins of Ostan Uchi, etc. etc. When these cards are flipped over, do you instantly have the ablity to use their effects (farmer token, pop opponents campsite, and so on) or do you have to wait till next turn?

Regions that get revealed during the Events Phase enter play at the end of that Phase. [GE p. 49] This is before the Action Phase, which is where Limited and Open actions are used. You can use a Farmlands the turn it appears.

It was to my understanding that you immediately could use them, but one of my groups wished me to ask. So, is it immediate, or delayed?

Immediate. L5R does not have a "summoning sickness" rule.

honor loss questons

there are a few events that cause honor losses. Imper Fun, dealing with Shadows, a matter of pride. out of these events are any of there honor losses considered 1 whole honor loss or multiple losses. i want to use bayushi kaukatsu with these events to cause major honor loss

Any card that's worded to cause a loss "for each" or "for every" certain condition will generally create multiple losses. A Matter of Pride causes one large loss (per player) because the amount is worded as "three TIMES" the number of Shadowlands cards, not "three FOR EACH".

Ruling requested: Bonds of Fate

We've had some problems with this card at our local groups:

The point of contention is that the card specifically states it may be played during the "Action Phase" thus restricting it from being played during the "battle action segment" regardless of it being an Open action and satisfying all other requirements for battle actions.

So is it self restricting or can it be used in battle?

It says to play it during the Action Phase, and that's what it means. It's self-restricting.

Ruling requested: Bonds of Fate

To build on this...

Can it be played during an Ambush?

No. Ambush creates a new Attack Phase that interrupts the Action Phase. [archive]
