post for 4 February 2003

Jeff Alexander, sent 5 February 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

SoGF + Shrine of Evening Star

Scenario: Player uses Show of Good Faith to borrow a personality, and destroys it.

While the Shrine is clear that the personality is not required to be in the Shrine player's discard pile, the question is which player's control the returned personality will be under.

The player whose discard pile it's returned from.

If the personality is considered to be under the control of the player who controlled it at the time of its destruction, then a player can use SoGF to steal a Personality of their Clan permanently.

That looks legal. The prohibitions against attacking or moving cards only lasts while the Personality stays under control the first time. As soon as the Personality leaves play or control, those restrictions end.

Does the use of an attached card also target the personality to which the card is attached?

I can't answer that with a simple "yes" or "no". Some do, some don't.

That is, if Chen bows to use the Horsebow, is he precluded from using the Daikyu (or Horsebowmen or Archers or any other item or follower with a Ranged Attack) later on in the battle, simply because Chen is now bowed?

Actions on unbowed cards attached to a bowed Personality can still be used [GE p. 24] provided their actions don't target him or require him to bow as part of the cost. Something the Gold rulebook doesn't mention, since it came up after it was printed, is that Spells are an exception to this rule.

Right, so just to clear things up:

You can combine any ranged attack on a personality with ranged attacks on one or more items, if the personality doesn't have to bow to make the ranged attacks on any of the items?

You can combine a ranged attack on an item which requires the personality to bow with ranged attacks on one or more other items, if the personality doesn't have to bow to make the ranged attacks on any of the other items?

You can't combine two ranged attacks printed on the same card.

You can't combine any ranged attack on a personality with one on an item if the personality has to bow to make the ranged attack on the item, regardless of whether the personality bows for his or her own attack?

You can't combine ranged attacks on two separate items if the personality has to bow for both ranged attacks.

Why write five different rules when there are only three?

1. You can't combine two attacks on the same card. [GE p. 63]

2. You can't combine two attacks if you can't pay both their costs. (This is pretty much fundamental across all effects in the game, and even all effects in all other CCGs, if you think about it.)

3. You can't combine an attack from a Personality with one from one of his Items if he has to bow as a cost of the Item's. [GE p. 63]

And that's it.

And what about combining Ranged attacks on personalities with Ranged attacks on Spells? Can one substitute "item or spell" for "item" in the above, or is there more to it than that?

Go by the way the rules are written: Spells aren't covered by exception #3.

coming into play..

Check Kolat Duplicate: "Honor is not gained when these personalities enter play." You gain nothing and he is not rehonoured. However, if he's entering play dishonoured for some other reason, for example, The Company You Keep, he will be rehonoured, I think.

A Personality who enters play dishonored still produces a 0-point gain if paid for in full, and would not be restored to honorable status.

question

Can a personality's personal honor ever be higher than 5, or is it capped?

There is no general rule limiting the maximum value of any Personality stat.

Questions for Jeff

Can you use We Will Have Revenge after refusing an Ia Challenge? Yes.

Do I understand it right that the penalty for refusing the challenge (lose 7 honor and dishonor personality) is NOT a part of a duel but a consequence of the refusal, thus making it possible to play WWHR, because when you lose honor, the duel has ended (in fact, there has never been a duel) ?

Whether the loss is caused by a challenge, duel, or refusal is irrelevant. It's caused by the Iaijutsu Challenge CARD, and We Will Have Revenge cares about only that. (Defend Your Honor works the same way, and has for a long time.)

Now for the Vengeful Dead lot, just clarifications, also:

A personality killed as a result of an Ambush cannot be targeted by VD. By the same reason, it can't be targeted if he died from a We Will Have Reveng, isn't it ?

Dying from being in a tied or losing army during battle resolution is not considered dying due to a card effect, regardless of whether a card started that battle.

Another one: Someone Iaijutsu Challenges me, I refuse and commit sepukku. Will this dead personality be targeteable by Vengeful Dead?

No.

The last one (this a little hard for me): a 3 Chi personality duels one of my personalities. We both focus, rising the personality chi above 3. Someone calls strike, we reveal focus, I'm loosing badly. I play a Poisoned Weapon. He will still win the duel, but die after it resolves due to the -3Chi Penalty. Could the other player chose that personality when VD resolves to kill one of my personalities ? The archive says that 0 chi is not a card effect, but I still have doubts about it...

He cannot choose that Personality. The archive is correct.

Extending the last question: If I had played Kharmic Strike, could his dead personality be chosen as VD check personality on his discard pile?

No. The death is still caused by the card that started the duel.

Rules Question

This question has to do with Hiruma Ryuchi's ranged attack.

Hiruma Ryuchi "Crab Clan Hunter * Samurai Battle: Once per battle, make a Ranged 2 Attack without bowing. This is a Ranged 4 Attack instead if it targets a Creature."

This is from the rulebook All Ancestors and Experienced cards are Unique. All Mujina and all cards printed with the Ratling trait are Creatures. All Creatures, all Oni, all Goblins, and all cards printed with the Naga trait are Nonhuman. All Skeleton, Skeletal, Zombie, and Necromancer cards are Undead. All Oni and Undead cards are Shadowlands cards.

Is a ranged attack against a shadowlands card considered to be made against a creature?

From the very rules you quote, the only traits that make something a Creature implicitly are "Mujina" and the PRINTED word "Ratling" (i.e., bringing Toku into play from a Warrens deck and playing Oath of Fealty will NOT turn him into a Creature). If it doesn't have the "Creature" or "Mujina" traits and it doesn't have the printed "Ratling" trait, Ryuchi's ranged attack strength against it is only 2.

Show of Good Faith Question

Since Vengeful Dead is getting a lot of play lately, I have a question for everyone: With Show of Good Faith, if I borrow someone and kill them, they do go to my dead pile - do they return to their original controller's dead pile at the end of the turn?

No. [archive]
