A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Private Dojo/Carrion's Breath
Carrion's Breath Open: Bow Carrion's Breath and target a unit to raise the strength of all Fear effects on cards in that unit by 1 for the rest of the turn.
Private Dojo Reaction: After one of your Personalities enters a duel, raise a Personality's Chi (or other stat used in the duel) by one of his or her non-variable Fear strengths until the duel ends.
Q1: Can the effects of Carrion's Breath and Private Dojo be combined?
Yes. Private Dojo utilizes the card's current Fear strength, which includes all bonuses.
Q2: In the above example, if you have two each of Carrion's Breath and Private Dojo, could they all be used to raise Voitagi's Chi from 2 to 12 for that duel?
Yes...although note that Carrion's Breath is not a Reaction. If you haven't used it by the time the duel starts, it's too late.
Cancel Rallying Cry?
Oracle of Thunder Reaction: Bow Oracle of Thunder and pay 1 Gold to cancel an Action card played when there is already at least one copy of that card in its player's discard pile. Remove all copies of that card in that player's discard pile, including the one just played, from the game.
Faith in My Clan You may play this card only if a Clan Champion from your Faction is in your army. Reaction: Cancel an action.
Q1: Oracle of Thunder can cancel Rallying Cry if one is already in the opponent's discard pile. If you are the defender and have a Clan Champion (e.g., Yoritomo Kitao Exp) in your army, can Faith in My Clan react to Rallying Cry and cancel it?
The Defender's units stay in their armies until the Attack Phase ends. [GE p. 57] This is after attacking units go home bowed, even at the last battle. Faith in My Clan is playable and can cancel Rallying Cry.
Q2: Are there any other possible ways to cancel a Rallying Cry?
Suspended Terrain won't cancel it but will make it useless. There are more canceling options in the Open environment.
So is it Mantis or Yoritomo's Alliance now?
I was going through the rules archive at l5r.alderac.com today, and I happened accross what I thought was a rather interesting comment under the Kyuden Yoritomo, Kyuden Kitsune, and Yoritomo's Alliance stronghold sections. It read as follows: " Personalities swearing fealty or otherwise joining gain the "Yoritomo's Alliance" trait. " This was in addition to comments for the two later strongholds that their players are of the Yoritomo's Alliance faction. Now, as far as I know, the Yoritomo's Alliance faction has never officially transitioned to Mantis entirely in the rules, even though it has in the story... so what I'm wondering is, do the rules for those old Mantis strongholds apply to the modern ones as well? If a Mantis player using City of Lightning plays Oath of Fealty, do his out-of-faction personalities gain the Yoritomo's Alliance trait?
Yes. That is the trait listed in the current rulebook.
Multi question
I play alot of multi, but have a question that popped into my head recently...
Battle occurrs with several players. I am invited by both sides but dont send any units.
Can I still use At Your Command?
When invited as an ally by both Attacker and Defender, you may move units into either of their armies until such time as you finally do move or assign something. This "locks you in" to that one side only.
MoneyLender Question
you can't, moneylender only stores standard gold and gold that pays for holdings as long as i know.
You cannot pay to add tokens to Moneylender with gold that can only be spend when playing or paying for a Holding. You're not paying for a Holding -- you're paying for an action.
rules question
If a personality gets a permanent stat increase through something like Plains Above Evil or other card effect, is this a bonus that can be negated by In Search of the Future or other card effects?
Yes. "Permanent" only means it lasts all game. It does not mean the bonus is immune to alteration.
FOU Questions
The Anvil“s Blessing: Political Limited: Reveal an Item from your hand and target an opponent's Personality who can legally attach it. That opponent decided whether your attach the Item to the Personality, paying all costs, or you discard the Item and the opponent loses 3 Honor.
If I use this action to attach Kiseru (Any time this Personality would straighten, he or she does not straighten unless you discard a card from your hand.) that personality would only starighten if I discard a card? or if his controller discard a card?
"You" means the controller of the card [Glossary], and all cards in a unit are controlled by whoever controls the Personality [GE p. 25] The other player would need to discard.
If I bow Tamori Tsukiro during a battle for a range attack, can destroy a follower and then destroy the personality if both are under 4 force?
No. Tsukiro's ranged attacks are simultaneous. [card text] Since they are all made at once, you cannot wait for some of them to destroy cards before you aim the rest. All your targets must be picked at the beginning -- and you cannot target Personalities with ranged attacks when they have Followers.
A champion“s strike ( Battle: Target one of your Unique Samurai in this battle to destroy and number of opposing Followers with a total Force less than or equal to your Samurai's.)
Can I use it to destroy a number of followers with a total force less or equal to my samurais force or destroy all followers with total or less force equal to my samurai force?
I'm going to have to say the first, for two reasons: it matches what the card says, and I can't figure out what you mean in the second part.
Question on Yoshi no Shiryo
My defending army includes Kuni Utagu Exp. with Yoshi no Shiryo attached. The attacking army includes two bowed Personalities with Weapons. We both pass, and the attacker plays Armed and Ready. May I bow Utagu to cancel Armed and Ready?
My reasoning was "yes," since any action taken at the start of Resolution is still taken "during" battle, as per the wording on Yoshi no Shiryo. Was this correct?
Yes.
rules questions.
I was reading the card Balance in Nothingness, which reads "Reaction: Cancel an action or Event targeting one or more of your bowed Personalities", and I have a few questions concerning this card. 1) Could it stop a spell. It does not say action card so I would that that it would stop any action that would affect my bowed personalities. My reasoning for this is that useing a spell is an action (either open, limited, battle, reaction).
Correct. "Action card" means Action card, but "action" means anything anywhere that starts with "Limited", "Open", "Battle", or "Reaction".
2) Also would this card work for a ranged attack or any other action that affects the bowed peeps.
That "affects"? Not necessarily. It has to target. For instance, it can be used against Occult Murders but not Peasant Revolt.
