Jeff Alexander, sent 21 January 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Precise orders+norikazu exp2

can you combo precise orders and norikazu exp2 to force your oponent to remove multiple cards from his deck?

No. Norikazu does not have a limit on how many times his ability can be used. He has a limit on how many times he can target the same thing, which is different.

Thoughts on how much a bye should be worth...

Anyone have any exp with this? Thoughts? Negative or positive feedback wanted! :)

The bye'd player is not to blame for not having an opponent. That's exclusively the responsability of the TO. For that reason he shouldn't be ever penalized by this.

If there are an odd number of applicants, this can make it very hard on the TO. He either has to forbid one person from playing or somehow produce one extra player.

Likewise, players can and do drop out of the tournament between rounds -- often without informing the TO. After the first two rounds of Swiss in a large tournament, it is not unusual for players to discover -- after the round begins -- that they've been paired against opponents who are no longer present. The TO *can* be more diligent about this, but it effectively requires taking a new roll call before each round...and again, there is the issue of an odd total attendance roughly half the time.

So making it exclusively the TO's responsibility to prevent byes doesn't give us a solution to the problem.

Rules question for Jeff

If a player has no units in a battle after the resoulution segement can he or she play a Rallying Cry? Does RC target?

Yes, he can. No, it doesn't, by targeting rule #3.

Rules Question: Shiro Shinjo

I understand that the wording "items you own" to mean items that were in my deck when the game began. That being the case, when does the game technically begin? I thought it was when we revealed strongholds, but some local players believe that it doesn't start until the player who goes first flips over their dynasty cards, and thus the +1 Focus value bonus doesn't have an effect when cutting to see who goes first. So when does the game technically start, and is this stated in the rulebook or rulesheets anywhere?

Forwarded to the Rules Team.

a few question

im sure it'd been asked already but i've missed it if it has shiba tsukune 1kyod is not unique does this mean i can have all 3 in play at the same time?

If a card does not have the "Unique" trait, you may have three of it your deck and any number of it in play. Period. The presence of other cards with that title does not matter.

can i overlay her exp 3 version and still have 2 others in play if so?

Yes.

can i have both her 1kyod and her exp 2 non 1ykod in my deck at the same time?

Yes.

if so could i have both in play at the same time since she is truly not unique

Yes.

egg of pan ku if i copy a personality of my own, then have an exp version come face up could i overlay on the egg of pan ku

Yes, assuming it's not illegal for any other reasons.

Whither Gold?

I for one am certainly hopeing that the ability to sanction "Gold" tournaments does not dry up come October.

The ability to sanction them isn't going to change at all.

Rules question

Does Judgment of Toshiken make Double Chi work again for the challenger of Revealing the Ancient Wisdom? I ask because of the line "The Double Chi trait works as usual" on JoT. Maybe I'm being too much of a literalist, but it seems like this works.

"As usual" for the Revealing duel is "not at all". You do not gain the benefit of adding your focuses twice.

2 Questions

Greetings,

Being the stubborn lot that my players are, they have insisted that I ask the following questions. First off is Daidoji Ekiken vs A Test of Courage:

Daidoji Ekiken

Crane Clan Harrier * Samurai Reaction: Bow Ekiken after a personality with lower Chi assigns to attack one of your Provinces to send that Personality home. The Personality may not assign for the rest of the Attack Phase.

A Test of Courage

Reaction: Play this card when an action is moving one of your target Personalities out of battle. Cancel the action. You cannot bow the Personality to take actions or target the Personality with actions until after the turn.

Can the Test be used against Ekiken? I do not think so, due to the fact that when units are assigning, they are not in a battle just yet.

It's a close call, but I'm going to agree with you.

Next: Tsudao vs. another battle:

Toturi Tsudao The Sword * Political Battle: Discard the Imperial Favor to send an attacking or allying Personality home from this battle, bowed. You may take this action during a battle in which you have no units.

Play A declares an attack on player B and neither call for allies. Player C, being the honorable bastich that he is, has the Favor and is using Tsudao. In the battle, he chooses to use the Favor to send one of player A's units home from the battle.

The conflict arises when one of my players declares that the person with the Favor has neither Presence nor Relevance. I have countered that the cards always take precedent over the rules, such as in this situation. So, who would be correct?

You again. Tsudao, by card text, does not require Presence, and sending someone home from the current battle has Relevance because it affects (and, in the case of Tusdao, also targets) something in the battle. There is no rule that you have to be an ally to play actions -- the only extra rule is that you have to be an ally, Attacker, or Defender to move your cards into the battle.

A question about tacticians

I've a question regarding use of Lion Scout and White Shore Plain terrain. If i use one of my tacticians for something (superior strategist, ranged attack of Fujimaro, ...) and i use the reaction on Lion Scout, will they still gain force bonus through the terrain? I think not ('cause the wording on the terrain) but i want to be sure.

You won't get the terrain bonus. White Shore Plane looks at whether you've used the Tactician trait, not whether you've used it the maximum number of times.

Rules

I have trouble regarding timing.

I have a Wish Granted in hand. My opponent attack me on a province with a face up personnality. I Defend with one personality. I lost the battle, his total army force during résolution is more than my Province Strengh + my total defending army force.

Can I react to the death of my personality during resolution with my A Wish Granted to bring my face up personality in play before the province is destroyed?

No. When the Attacker wins a battle by that much, the defending army and the Province are destroyed at the same time. [GE p. 57] A Wish Granted is played "after" your Personality dies [card text], which is also after the Province is gone.

And a linked question, mainly because of Bayushi Sharaku. If he's destroyed in a province or discarded by someone else than me, his power DOESN'T trigger right?

If the Province is destroyed, you can't use his Reaction because he isn't being discarded from the Province -- he's being put into the discard pile because the place he used to be no longer exists.

You also cannot use his Reaction if you were not the one discarding him -- though if you are the cause, the discard can be for any reason.

Whither Gold?

That poses an interesting question... What will happen with the organized play rankings when Diamond is released?

They will add "Diamond" to their list of sanctionable formats, I would imagine.

quick citadel of daigotsu question

Can you use way of death for the fear 3 effect with the citadels ability to bow personalities with unbowed cards?

No. The Citadel's special effect cannot be used with cards that can't bow, like Action cards played from hand.

MoneyLender Question

A question came up in a game the other night re Moneylender and Bushi Dojo:

Moneylender: You may pay any amount of Gold when paying for Moneylender. Put one Coin Token on it when it enters play for each Gold paid. Bow Moneylender and remove any number of Coin tokens from it to produce an equal amount of Gold. Limited: Bow Moneylender and pay any amount of Gold to add one Coin token to it for each Gold paid.

Bushi Dojo: Bow the Bushi Dojo to produce 6 Gold when paying for a Follower or an action that creates a Follower token.

So can one use the Bushi Dojo to produce 6 coin tokens for Moneylender? We allowed it for the sake of friendly play, but on reflection, it seems that the BD produces gold only "when paying for a follower or action creating a follower token" and this combo shouldn't work.

This seems crystal-clear to me. Moneylender itself is a Holding, not a Follower, and its action does not create Follower tokens. The Bushi Dojo can't pay to recharge it.

ring of air ????

Ring of Air "Play this card after the third Spell effect your cards create and/or innate ability your cards use in one turn. Elemental Benefit: Once per turn, whenever a card creates a Spell effect, you may redirect the effect to another target."

Walking the Way "Limited: Bow this Shugenja and destroy this Spell to get a card from your Fate deck and add the card to your hand. Shuffle the deck."

Can a Walking the Way be "taken away" with ring of Air.

This is a Target question, "your deck" and "your hand" refers to the caster, can I use the Ring of Air to make it like I cast the spell????

The answer is in the Gold Edition rulebook on page 47:

] You can redirect an action only to something else it could have ] targeted originally. Should you redirect an action, treat it ] as though it had been aimed at its new target all along. You ] cannot redirect untargeted actions or actions that give no ] choice for their target (such as a card that targets "your ] Stronghold").

So: no.

More imporantly, this answer has nothing to do with whether you're in the Action or the Attack Phase. Razor's Edge Dojo requires you to discard if you target his Crab Clan people "while they are not in an army." No one is in an army when the attack is first declared.

Shouldn't that be "Yes, you do have to discard"? Since no personalities are in armies when OiC is played, and OiC targets a personality, won't OiC therefore be targetting a personality not in an army and trigger Razor's Edge Dojo to force the discard?

Um....yes. I somehow managed to read Razor's Edge Dojo backward. You do have to discard to target them when an attack is declared.
