Jeff Alexander, sent 18 January 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

heres a rules question :)

during a battle, player A has bunch of units in the battle. Player B drops encircled terrain, and then player A & B take a few turns trading actions like pumps and ranged attacks. Once they both pass and Encircled resolves, player A drops A Test of Courage to prevent a 2nd unit from going home.

Does it cancel Encircled? Does it just leave the AToC'ed peep there?

It cancels Encircled. [Test of Courage card text] No units are sent home.

I am thinking now it cancels the Encircled, but the mechanics of a card being in play for a while and then being canceled seemed wierd to me.

It is possible to cancel an action after it's been played. It's even possible to cancel an action after it's already produced some effects, which is why the rulebook tells you what to do when that happens.

Couple of rule questions

Here are a couple of rule questions:

First, is Outmaneuvered in Court considered to be played during the Action Phase or the Attack Phase?

Outmaneuvered in Court is played "when an attack is declared". [card text] Attacks are declared in the Declaration Segment of the Attack Phase. [GE rulebook, p. 51 and Turn Sequence] This is largely irrelevant to your question...

Specifically, if my opponent is using Razor's Edge Dojo, would I have to discard a card to target his personality with OiC? I think I don't have to, but just wanted to make sure.

No.

More imporantly, this answer has nothing to do with whether you're in the Action or the Attack Phase. Razor's Edge Dojo requires you to discard if you target his Crab Clan people "while they are not in an army." No one is in an army when the attack is first declared.

Second, if a personality I have stolen from another player (such as with Show of Good Faith or Kolat Master) is killed while under my control (by my card effect), the personality goes to the discard pile of the original owner, right?

Wrong. GE rulebook p. 60:

] Destroyed and discarded cards leave play and go to their ] current controller's appropriate discard piles

If he then gets Vengeful Dead, can he remove the dead personality from his discard pile and destroy one of mine?

The dead Personality that you stole is in your discard pile, not his. He can't remove it for Vengeful Dead's effect. (But you might be able to for your own Vengeful Dead!)

cards for koku

I just noticed the new cards for koku up on the website. Looking at my Heralds, I see they are the ones from Issue 5. The latest issue I have is 6, though. Does that mean that we can order ones from issues 5 and 6, or just issue 5? Or is it the wrong cards for koku list?

You can order cards from both the website and the latest Herald, even when the two lists are different. As a small bonus to Herald subscribers, the cards for koku list on the website does not get updated instantly.

Whither Gold?

How many Gold cards will see any play in the Open environment? How many "balanced" Gold personalities will fit into the Uber-decks, full of boxable province-killers and too-powerful holdings?

The only Personality that can possibly find space in a deck already "full of boxable province-killers" is a boxable double-province-killer.

A card that's worse than the best existing cards won't get used, regardless of whether it's a little worse or a lot. If Gold hadn't come along, the Open environment would either contain boxable double-province-killers by now (and have average game lengths even shorter than then 3-5 turn range it had following S****t W**s), or it wouldn't contain them, meaning the expansions that would have been produced between September, 2001 and today would have had as much impact on Open as the actual Gold expansions have.
