Rules for 29 November 2002

Zen Faulkes, sent 30 November 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

Some Fall of Otosan Uchi information showed up, so I can answer this one now...

FOU Question: Glick and Shiba Takeishi

I have 2 copies of Glick in play, loyal to the Phoenix Clan[.] I have used Inspiration on each of them this turn. I also have a copy of Shiba Takeishi in play. If one of the Glicks is destroyed, Takeishi gains +1/+1. I then destroy the other Glick to return the original to play, unbowed, beacuse of Inspiration. Takeishi gains another +1/+1. Can I repeat the Glick-for-Glick exchange, with Takeishi gaining +1/+1 for each time a Glick is destroyed, ad nauseam?

Yes.

If so, do I lose 3 Honor every time a Glick is returned to play[?]

Yes.

Can we assume the same thing for Test of Might and Matsu Dometai? Currently, he can focus during test of might, but the focus of force can not go higher than his chi during the duel. So it is almost an autoloss for him.

Correct.

Is it under review as well?

No.

Questions

Does "A Wish Granted" let you ignore the honor requirement of the card you're bringing into play, too?

No, but it doesn't need to. See Archive, general rules, Honor Requirements.

Ring of Water: How does it interact with the following two cards: Armor of Osano-Wo: since the Ring says "_after_ a battle in which you... destroyed an opposing army or province..." and the armor says "Instead of destroying the Province that this Personality is attacking, you may put the Ring of Earth into play.", I assume you cannot play both Rings after the same battle.

You could. You could respond to the Province destruction with Armor of Osano-Wo, and to the army's destruction with the Ring of Water (that the Ring of Water can be triggered when you smack an army is a fact you quoted yourself!).

Surrender: Can I still play the Ring if I don't destroy the entire army, and instead choose to spare units?

No. Destroying some cards is not destroying an army (see Dark Allies glossary definition of an army: "*all* units").

The clause is not "while Atoshi remains bowed", but "until Atoshi straightens". If he never bows, he never straightens, right? This means the people in Lockdown stay in Lockdown, while the eager apprentices keep bowing people each turn. Oh boy. Official ruling, please?

We did that over a year ago and put it in the Rules Archive. I could see how you might have missed it though, seeing as how it was cleverly hidden under the entry for "Kakita Atoshi." ;)

Boastful Proclaimation causes an honor gain at the start of that player's NEXT turn. In Time of War check each player's Family Honor at the start of every turn. The original question was: which happens first?

Likewise, if something gives you 3 Honor at the start of your turn, it would only be consistant to rule that there is no moment of time, not even a tiny one, where your turn has begun but you haven't gotten that 3 Honor yet. Thus that gain will always sneak in before In Time of War makes its check of your Family Honor, adds 5, and sets its cap.

First - this means the player can win by Honor through this, right?

Yes. Precedents: see Archive, Events, A Soul of Thunder.

By strict wording bowing Atoshi isn't a cost it's an effect!

Continue to treat it as a cost for now. Because there are several existing rulings by Jeff that say bowing Atoshi is a cost, I'm not about to change them.

Fu Leng and his clones

I play monk. I bring Hantei the 38th in play. Then, i play Oath of Fealty and attache Shiryo No Tetsuya to him. So now, his name is "Hantei the 39th", and he is unique. Is my Shadowland opponent allowed to bring his "Hantei the 39th" in play ?

No. (The Rules Junta is having a discussion about numerals, though.)

Omoidasu

The wording on Omoidasu is a little unclear, but it seems that it bows after the battle, so if you want to gain two honour after destroying a province, you have to Rally, right?

I'd say no. It requires the Personality "is in an army that destroys a Province"; that's present tense.

A couple of questions

Are the printed in the box Stronghold legal for tournaments as were before gold edition? Are they considered the original stronghold?

Not sure what you're asking. If you're asking if you can use a cut-up box in a tournament, sure.

And my opponent plays a Focus 5 in a duel against [Mirumoto Zenko + Shinsei's Staff + other weapon]. How much does his Focus aport to his Chi?

Not such what "aport" means, but... There is not a single correct answer. This one falls under the third cardinal rules: when two effects create conflicting effects simultaneously, the current player picks the order.
