Jeff Alexander, sent 27 November 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Question on Reacts.

Okay, after this past weekend when I was rudely introduced to the Counterattack, Rally, Counterattack combo I started thinking. Is this possible with any other evil react combos? Could I Pick your battles twice with a Yu deck litterally knocking off an entire army while also To the Last Man-ing it?

Pick Your Battles has no effect on how many cards the Yu trait can destroy. Also, playing multiple Pick Your Battles in one battle is no different than playing only one, regardless of whether Yu is involved.

Playing multiple copies of To the Last Man is legal and will force two separate destructions. It's potentially very nasty, especially if your opponent has to destroy extra Force because he can't match the required amount exactly.

FOU Question

I was looking at the ability of Kyuden Doji and the question came up. Could I bow an attached Diplomatic Apprentice to have a samurai accept a duel?

Yes.

I would automatically say yes except for that ruling made on Atoshi.

Atoshi is only odd because the duration of his effect depends on how long he stays bowed. Technically, you CAN bow the Apprentice instead of Atoshi -- it's ineffective, not illegal.

Oracle of the Void honor loss Q

Is the honor loss from using the Oracle of the Void's second ability one honor loss, or a separate honor loss per card?

Separate.

Duels of personal honor

FROM THE RULES ARCHIVE: "Because focuses provide a stat bonus, effects that prevent bonuses will affect focusing (e.g., Monsoon, Naga Guard). [Reversal, JA, e- mail, 30 August 2000] "

A dishonored personality's focuses (in a duel of PH) will not raise the PH during the duel, correct?

For now, consider this correct. It's under review, though.

way to cancel reactions????

Fall on your knees. Faith in my clan. ------ reads You may only play this card if a clan champion from your faction is in your army. Cancel an ACTION. Not a reaction. Or does this term action mean ANY red bordered fate card? Kiho? Reaction?

It means any action -- any "Limited", "Open", "Battle", or "Reaction" action appearing anywhere on any card or in any part of the rulebook.

Could you use Superior Strategist to fetch and play Traveling Ronin?

No. [card text] Unlike Faith In My Clan, Superior Strategist says "Action Card", so only a card possessing an appropriate Battle or Open action and a red border matching the picture on page 13 or 18 of the rulebook can be retrieved.

Little fuzzy on this one...Jeff...

With all the previous talk about targeting/costs/ect ect in the past couple of months, I am having trouble figuring this one out. (maybe im just slow...:) )

If Dairya exp 2 uses his ability (battle: once per battle, destroy a personality with higher chi.) and it gets canceled with Faith in my clan/Flee the darkness or any of a zillion other cancel action cards, is it considered to have occured?

No. [GE p. 45]

On: Dairya

ie Could Dairya just do it again next time its his controllers action?

Yes.

Rules question

If I named 4 with the Blade of Truths and then on my first chance to focus played "No more games, Yasuki" would the random card be chosen from those that are not a 4 focus value, or from the entire hand? If he only had 4 focus cards would he then not be able to focus?

"No More Games, Yasuki" says, "The focus is chosen randomly from the cards that player can legally focus." If that player cannot focus 4s, he chooses randomly from the rest. If he has nothing but 4s, "No More Games" does not force him to focus. So, he strikes. This is all straight from the cards.

Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng (exp)

Third, though, I'd like to ask about traits sticking or leaving on an overlay. If I overlay the Porcelain Mask exp over the Porcelain Mask nonexp, I'll still remove a single +1/+1 Porcelain token each turn, right?

Right.

Since traits of overlaid cards go away, I won't be removing 2 per turn.

Correct.

Also, the "Porcelain Mask is destroyed when it has 0 tokens" bit goes away as well if I understand correctly (because it isn't printed on the experienced version).

Also correct. Nothing happens when the Experienced Mask runs out of tokens.

Also, I'd just like to confirm that coming in to play effects don't happen when "stuff" gets overlaid just like when personalities are overlaid, right? That means I don't lose 6 honor if I overlay the experienced Mask over the non-experienced mask.

Right and right.

Finally, since it's printed on the card, all your Shadowlands personalities (including the one wearing the mask) gets +1/+1 as long as you have the mask in play. When the mask is destroyed, all your Shadowlands personalities lose 1 Force and 1 Chi only until the end of the turn because a duration is not specified, correct?

Correct.

way to cancel reactions????

reactions are actions. Also I believe that a spell, or kiho would count as an action for Faith in my clan wouldn't it? I know that reactions do, just not sure about kiho's or spells.

Answered above.

New dragon and already a question

*Mirumoto Tachiyama (uncommon)

Btw, one question: does his force/chi bonus change during a battle if the opponent plays a few cards from his hand? Or does the bonus stay fix from the time he is assigned? And similarly for a duel: if my opponent has a full hand and discards all his cards does Tachiyama's chi go back down to 2?

Tachiyama wins 2 bonuses (F & C) at the moment he is opposed, either in battle or duel. As there is no stated duration, those bonuses last until the end of the turn. So, if your opponent plays cards, or focuses, it won't change the bonuses, for they've already been calculated. Or i think so( i hope i made myself clear).

Sorry, but this is not correct. Tachiyama's bonuses DO have a stated duration: "While opposed by one or more Personalities in a battle or duel". As soon as he's not opposed, the bonuses end. They are also continually recalculated as your opponent gains or loses cards.

New dragon and already a question

I'd be curious as to how [Tachiyama's bonus] interacts with In Search of the Future...

In Search of the Future will change his Force bonus to himself to 0 for as long as he is opposed in that particular situation.

Recycling?

Can Limited Kiho's that are not inherently keyworded "Political" be recycled when cast by Tamori Shukuen if playing The Shadowed Tower stronghold?

Yes.

Two rules questions

In Time of War has resolved and in one of the following turns player A gets a Boastfull Proclamation. Player B cannot destroy the province, so next turn Player A gains three Honor. Can player A choose to gain the honor before In Time of War checks his Family Honor, thus gaining eight that turn?

He can't choose to -- it happens that way regardless. It's analogous to the Geisha Assassin/Fortress of the Dragonfly combo.

Player A attacks player B with three units, player B defends with two 4F Personalities without attachments. Player B bows one of his units to play something. Then player A plays Overwhelmed, he destroys his highest Force unit. What are the options for player B? Can he: a) destroy the unbowed Personality b) destroy the bowed Personality c) return both Personalities to his fief d) only return the unbowed Personality to his fief

a, b, and c. He can target his own bowed Personalities because it's not HIS Overwhelmed action.
