post for 14 November 2002

Jeff Alexander, sent 15 November 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Chithith

Chithith is to be played as printed. Since Kihos target their caster, his trait prevents him from casting Kihos unless he has a non-Ratling Follower.

The Fall of Otosan Uchi questions

As per our normal policy, I am not going to be answering any questions on cards or Strongholds for The Fall of Otosan Uchi until, at the very earliest, we have the actual, physical cards themselves in-house so I can be sure of having absolutely accurate card text. I will be archiving FOU questions I see on the list until then and answer them all when the time comes.

Rules Q

Outmaneuvered by force, cancels a politcal actions by a player with less total force in their feif. Do bowed personalities (units) count towards that players force total?

and

Rules question (JEFF)

When playing Out Maneuvered By Force, do you count all force in the Home or just the unbowed force?

For purposes of playing TDWWM if the opponents unit's peep is bowed does his unit count as 0 force for targeting purposes of TDWWM?

From the FAQ:

"Even when a unit is just one Personality card with nothing attached, there's still a distinction between individual card Force and total unit Force. Some cards and game effects, like To Do What We Must and the Resolution Segment at the end of a battle, care about one, and some, like Test of Might and ranged attacks, care about the other. You need to read the card or the rulebook carefully and decide which kind of Force it refers to.

"Q: Do I use the rules that make bowed cards count for zero Force all the time, or just in the resolution of a battle?

"A: All the time. This is important, since there are cards that care about total unit and army Forces outside of resolution, like To Do What We Must and Outmaneuvered by Force."

Togashi Iroshi and Tamori Hiroko

How does Tamori Hiroko's reaction interact with Iroshi's ability? Basically, does one wait to use Hiroko's ability until after Iroshi's ability, or during?

As soon as the discard happens. During.

- i.e. when you have the top 5 cards of your fate deck in your hand, and you discard a card to show and take a tattoo into your hand, do you wait until Iroshi's ability fully resolves, so that the rest of the top 5 cards are on the bottom of your deck, or can you bow Hiroko at the time of the discard while the top 5 cards of your fate deck are "in limbo"?

It happens before the remaining four cards are moved to the bottom. You would draw the top card of your deck and then move the remaining three to the bottom.

When you use the Hound of the Lost's Reaction, you must target one particular Follower in the unit that the Fear is targeting. If Tenshu doesn't have any, the Hound's Reaction can't be used. The only way this combo works is if Tenshu has at least one Follower and all the cards attached to him are already bowed. This would bow one already-bowed Follower and Tenshu himself.

Care to explain how does this exactly work? sorry but I don't get it... you can use the hound of the lost ability if they have a bowed follower only???

I'm only addressing the combo you're trying to make work.

The Hound of the Lost's Reaction cannot be used if the unit you're Fearing has zero Followers. The Hound of the Lost's Reaction targets one Follower (the one you are choosing to bow regardless of Force), and you cannot take actions in L5R if you can't pick all the targets they need.

Now, to make your combo work, you also have to take into consideration the restriction that the Citadel of Daigotsu does not let you affect a Personality with Fear if the Personality has any unbowed cards attached.

To use the Hounds, Tenshu must have at least one Follower. To use the Citadel, Tenshu can't have any unbowed Followers. So, YOUR COMBO can't work unless Tenshu has a bowed Follower. Is it clear now?

Togashi's Shrine Preview!

What set was Doji's Shrine released with?

It has not yet been officially released.

Kyuden Gotei

Just to check, cause I don't have the current text on Blackened Skies with me (plus, I may be missing something):

If you use Mushin ('cause, remember, official policy is not to answer questions about non-released cards and non-cards) and your first action is Blackened Skies, doesn't your first Ranged Attack of the Blackened Skies "count as" your second Mushin action, thus effectively making the Mushin useless?

No. Blackened Sky inserts all its extra actions before Mushin's second.

On: Mushin
rule questions

1) is dying because you have 0 chi a rule book effect or a card effect?

Rulebook effect.

If some action or event gives a personality 0 chi, are they considered to be destoryed by a card effect?

No.

2)Is ambush declaring an attack?

Yes.

this applys for actions or events that say you can't declare an attack. i.e. akodo ginawa or Show of good faith.

Ambush would be illegal after either of these.

3) Is dying during the resolution of an ambush considered dying due to another players card effect if someone played the card against you?

No.

4) with Vengful dead if a player has no personalities to target but his own, must a player target one of the personalities they control?

Yes.

(it can be bowed or unbowed because an event is not an action right?)

Right.

another rule question

Vengeful dead.

because of the last sentence "this event resolves each time it is reveald, for all players"

does this mean that when it resolves both players must select an honorable dead personality each time it resolves?

No, it means the Event resolves every time any player reveals it. You don't get to be the sole player capable of resolving it if you're the lucky one to have yours resolve first.
