Hiruma Archers Focus Value [Jeff]
All of the copies of Hiruma Archers that I own have a Focus value of two, but I have heard from others that their copies have a Focus value of three. All of the other "Clan" followers from the same expansion have a Focus value of three. What is the correct Focus for Hiruma Archers?
I don't know of any versions that have 3 Focus. Looking at the files I believe were used in printing, I can't find any that don't have 2 Focus.
If your friends actually have 3 Focus Hiruma Archers and they are also from An Oni's Fury, they'd be played as written since neither the 2 nor the 3 is more recent than the other.
Question for Jeff
Can " fall on your knees " cancel " pick your battles" ?
No. Pick Your Battles is not played in the Battle Action Segment. "Battle resolution is the only time the phrase 'destroying an army' is satisfied." [GE rulebook]

JA: He must send home the one unit he can.
You pick an alternative you can satisfy and do as much of it as you can.
Jeff,
Take your Street to Street ruling into consideration. You ruled that you can attach Followers to your bowed Personalities, because you are targeting the Personalities with your opponents action. I think that in the case of Overwhelmed, you can target the 'Tested' Personality because you are targeting him with your opponents action.
It doesn't matter how similar they are. The situations are worded differently. The rulebook prohibits targeting your own bowed Personalities with your actions, but A Test of Courage prohibits targeting with any actions at all. It's a straightforward application of exactly what's written on the card and in the rules.
rule question
A quick question about Solar Eclipse and the spell The Masters Imprisoned: Solar Eclipse resolves while a unit is in limbo because of the spell, what happens? A) The unit returns immediately to play; B) The unit returns normally; C) The unit is in limbo until the effects of the Solar Eclipse wear off; D) It's in limbo for ever; or E) Something else...
The unit returns to play for the rest of the turn and leaves play again from the end of the turn until the Event wears off normally. (I can't figure out the difference between your A and B answers.)
Q. Suspended terrain
Situation: I have a personality in battle when Suspended Terrain resolves, but this personality is not in the battle (is in home or in another battle) when the Resolution Segment ends.
Q: This personality is bowed and cannot straighten during their controller's next Straighten Phase?
No. Only units in that battle when the Resolution Segment ends are affected. [card text]

Which trait would you check for Tamori Shukuen (the courtier that can cast limited kihos as a shugenja)?
Either just as a Courtier or as both a Courtier and a Shugenja, since you have a choice whether or not he casts the Kiho as a Shugenja.
post for 4 November 2002
Greetings,
If you force of will him (no 12th black scroll destroyed) he has 0 chi and 10 personal honor, and dies. per card text he is sent home bowed instead, but as FoW lasts until the end of turn, he will die again, in an infinite succession. how should this be handeled in tourneys? just leave him bowed until the end of turn?
Correct.
This ruling doesn't make any sense to me. If you have to bow him to prevent his destruction, how can that be done if he is already bowed?
Bowing him isn't a cost. You don't bow him to save him, he is automatically saved and bowed as a result.
Now a new question. The interaction of Flattery and Test of Courage came up this past weekend.
Flattery 0G 3FV You must have cards in your hand with total Focus values greater than the opposing army's force to play this card. Battle: Discard cards from your hand one at a time until the total discarded Focus values exceed the opposing army's force, to end the battle without resolution and send all units home without bowing. You may take this action during a battle in which you have no units.
A Test of Courage 0G 2FV Reaction: Play this card when an action is moving one of your target Personalities out of battle. Cancel the action. You cannot bow the Personality to take actions or target the Personality with actions until after the turn.
Actually two questions came out of our discussion. Since the effect of sending all units home is specified on the action, does AToC cancel the action?
This is in the FAQ. Reactions to units leaving a battle cannot be played in response to units going to their controllers' homes because a battle ended prematurely.
If not (and I'm guessing the ruling will be no), is AToC playable to keep one of your attacking personalities in the battle even though it is over (similar to the way defenders stay).
No.
post for 5 November 2002 / Jeff... Nother card question...
During a battle,
Defender has plain of fast troubles at his province.
He has a face down card currently at that province.
Defender then plays defensive duty
Now the defender can bring in the personality for free per the Plains. Will the personality be discarded now that it has entered play?
Yes.
Either way if the personality has entered play, will the province still gain the + or is it only while the card is sitting face up in the province.
What happens if the battle does not have a resolution. entrapping terrian, flattery
There is still an end to the battle, so Defensive Duty's final effect still happens and the Personality goes to the discard pile. This is not a destruction; cards like Kisada's Shrine can't be used to bring him back.
