Jeff Alexander, sent 6 November 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

State of the Game (long..please forgive me)

TypePersonality TitleMuchitsujo Rarity/EditionR Broken Blades Text"Unaligned Onisu of Chaos * Nonhuman * Cavalry * Unique * Shadowlands * Lose 5 Honor. Reaction: Bow before another player attaches a card from his or her hand to one of his or her Personalities to redirect the attachment to another legal target. Reaction: Once per turn, after a unit assigns to a battle during a Cavalry Maneuvers Segment or moves into a battle, bow that unit."

If I bring an Item into play can another player bow Muchitsujo to attach that item to one of his cards?.

When redirecting any action (or even a non-action effect), the new target must be as legal as the old one. You cannot normally attach Items from your hand to your opponent's Personalities, so Muchitsujo cannot normally force you to attach them there either.

If you force of will him (no 12th black scroll destroyed) he has 0 chi and 10 personal honor, and dies. per card text he is sent home bowed instead, but as FoW lasts until the end of turn, he will die again, in an infinite succession. how should this be handeled in tourneys? just leave him bowed until the end of turn?

Correct.

So if I have Dakosho in play as well, does my Dakosho get infinite force (as technically Hantei dies and bows infinitely)?

No. A card has to go from unbowed to bowed to trigger Dakosho.

Some rules questions

1. When a trait gives a force bonus for "being in an army", when does it apply (eg: Yu-Pan)?

It begins as soon as the Personality assigns or moves into an army and lasts until the Personality leaves or the battle ends.

1b. What if it's for being "opposed" (eg: Mu-Dan)?

It begins as soon as the Personality assigns or moves into an army and there is at least one opposing unit; or, if the Personality is already in an unopposed army, it begins as soon as a unit assigns, moves, or is created in the opposing army.

2. Can these be overconfidenced?

Yes. The MRP of Overconfidence does not require that the Force bonus come from an action.

3. If the overconfidence is legal, can one Fall On Your Knees either of them?

Only if the bonus begins while in a Battle Action Segment. Fall On Your Knees is not playable if the bonus (and thus the Overconfidence) happens when the unit assigns, for example.

FTH and Solar Eclipse....what was final ruling???

I remember this discussion a few weeks back, but as I was busy with other stuff I didnt really read it all the way through.

Do rings put into play with FTH and/or Hoshi Tadao count towards the elemental victory if Solar Eclipse goes off?

They count while Solar Eclipse is suppressing Spell effects and innate abilities, which, by MRP, is only until the end of the Event's first turn.

kuni Yori w/ imperial palace of Fu leng

If im using the 1000 years of darkness stronghold Can Kuni Yori exp3 get other people's DEAD non Shadowlands personalities and return them into play, or is that go against the stronghold restriction"?

By an old ruling, it's legal.

Who's army is it?

If 2 players ally together who's army is it?

The attacking army belongs to the Attacker. The defending army belongs to the Defender.

BUT...if a card talks about "your army", there's a very good chance it means "the army you have units in", so it might be playable even if you're only an ally. The entire text of the card needs to be considered.

Jeff... Nother card question...

During a battle,

Defender has plain of fast troubles at his province.

Plain of Fast Troubles Battle: If a face-up Personality is in this Province, bring the Personality into play, waiving all costs and ignoring Honor requirements, as a defending unit in this battle. (You can do this even if there are no attacking units.)

He has a face down card currently at that province.

Defender then plays defensive duty

Defensive Duty This card may only be played by the Defender. You may play this card in a battle in which you have no units. Battle: Search your Dynasty deck for a Personality card and put it face-up in the Province disacarding any cards already in that Province. Raise the Province's Strength by the Personality's Force. Discard the Personality when the battle ends.

Now the defender can bring in the personality for free per the Plains. Will the personality be discarded now that it has entered play?

Yes.

Either way if the personality has entered play, will the province still gain the + or is it only while the card is sitting face up in the province.

Defensive Duty does not say how long the strength bonus lasts, so it's good for the rest of the turn, no matter what happens to the Personality.

Engage the Enemy question.

Engage the Enemy Battle: Bow and destroy one of your Tactician Personalities to bow up to two opposing cards. This may not target a personality with attached unbowed cards.

My question: when bowing two opposing cards (like a follower and the personality it's attached to), is this a simultaneous effect or two seperate actions for the purpose of the "may not target a personality with attached unbowed cards" part of the action?

It is simultaneous. You cannot target a Personality with unbowed attached cards, not even if he only has one and you're targeting it with the other bowing effect.

Rules question

I've scanned the rules archive but did not find my answer.

Card is Private Augury:

Kiho Political Limited: Bow one of your Shugenja, Monks or Courtiers to take the Imperial Favor. This counts as a lobbying attempt. The personality you bow must have the highest Personal Honor or be tied for the highest among all Personalities in play that share any of those traits.

Do a personality only check other personalities that share his trait or all traits?

Only the ones that share his traits. [card text]

Meaning do a courtier checke only courtiers or also monks and shugenja?

If the Personality you bow is just a Courtier, you only check all other Courtiers. If she's a Monk and a Shugenja, you check everyone else who's either a Monk or a Shugenja (or both). Etc.
