Jeff Alexander, sent 30 October 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Odd Thought (RULING)

"No More Games, Yasuki"

You may play this card face-up as a focus in a duel to force the opposing player to focus, if able, at his or her next chance to focus or strike. The focus is chosen randomly from the cards that player can legally focus."

Ryokan's Sword

When this Personality focuses, you may play your Fate deck's top card as the Focus card. Do not look at the card until someone strikes. If you cannot focus with the card, discard it when you reveal it.

If I am duelling a Personality w/ Ryokan's Sword attached, and play "No More Games, Yasuki," can I "randomly" choose to make him focus the top card of his Fate Deck, as it is by card text legal for him to do?

The choice to focus from the top of the deck still belongs to the sword's controller, and if it's taken, nothing is chosen randomly -- the top card of the deck is focussed.

Question about Timelines and sets...

Is Scorpion Clan Coup considered part of the TOV timeline? TOV was released in Sep 97 while SCC was released in Dec 97, Jan 98, Feb 98.

Scorpion Clan Coup covers the time period prior to Imperial Edition. Many of the Personalities and Events in SCC would be anachronistic by the time the Day of Thunder happened.

The Fall

Does anyone know why previews for The Fall havn't started yet, I coulda swore they were supposed to start yesterday but everyone beens silent about it...just wondering.

The previews start late this week or early next.

post for 28 October 2002

1.Matsuo is a *non-samurai* so he can attach Tonfas.

2.Matsuo can attach two weapons.

3.If he attaches ono/no-dachi/etc. *first* he still can attach one more weapon.

4.Tonfa says if you have a Tonfa attached and no armor you may attach another Tonfa (not another weapon, even though Tonfa is a weapon).

5.If his second weapon attached is a Tonfa and he has no armor, does the text on Tonfa allow him to attach another Tonfa?

Yes.

Moving Question

if I bow my Port Town, can I move units from home to the battle , or does it have to be from another battle ?

They may come from anywhere, since there are no restrictions on Port Town regarding where they have to come from.

Diamond Story Arc (Story peeps)

A pair of questions re: story arcs and such.

1) Am I correct in assuming the Four Winds arc will finish with Fall?

No.

2) Will the Favor remain split in Diamond, or will the 'classic' favor come back in?

The split is working nicely.

Rules Q

Does starting the game with a card or effect "in play" trigger entering play effects as the game begins?

Forwarded to the Rules Team.

(sans sujet)

Just a few Ruling Questions :

1 - Is Miya Yemi ability Political? I should say no, but want to be sure

Ah! Thanks for helping find an omission on the Broken Blades rulesheet.

The answer is "yes". Backpedaling to the Dark Allies rulebook for a moment (which has the complete rule), for cards printed before Gold Edition, an action is Political even if it doesn't have the "Political" keyword if the action modifies an honor loss or gain or if it requires discarding the Imperial Favor as a cost. [p. 4]

2 - Is a Diplomatic Apprentice is attached to Shosuro Yasuko, can I react to the Declaration of an attack and forbid one peep from attacking, bowing Diplomatic Apprentice, and then react to forbid another one bowing Shosuro Yasuko?

From the upcoming FAQ (scheduled to be posted to our website by Friday):

Q: If I put a Diplomatic Apprentice on Shosuro Yasuko, can I bow the Apprentice and her together to stop two units from attacking?

A: No. The rulebook says each printed instance of a Reaction can only be used once per trigger, and Yasuko's trigger is the declaration of an attack. That means each time someone announces an attack, each Yasuko's ability can be used once and once only. The Diplomatic Apprentice doesn't change that; even if you bow the Apprentice instead of Yasuko, it's still Yasuko's ability being used.

3 - Bayushi Paneki add +3 to his PH for the purpose of attaching followers. Does that work if he's dishonored?

No. Being dishonored reduces Personal Honor to 0 after all other modifiers are applied. [GE p. 60]

Bayushi Paneki XP ignores them, so with him even dishonored he c an attach any follower right?

Correct.

4 - If I attach a Yoshi's fan to a dishonored personality, does the Personal Honnor is zeor or 1? I should say 0 but want to be sure. Same question about Bayushi Yojiro XP2 and Ki Rin Shrine XP.

0 and 0. See #3.

Akodo Fumio Question: Hoshi Wayan?

Hoshi Wayan Unaligned Monk. Tattooed. Limited: Once per turn, put a tattoo token on Wayan. Reaction: Destroy a tattoo token on Wayan immediately after an opposing Personality in this battle gains a bonus to Force and/or Chi. Wayan gains an identical bonus to that just gained by the opposing Personality. Wayan may only react this way once to each bonus.

Out of curiosity, Hoshi Wayan can destroy a token to copy any opposing force or chi bonuses as a reaction. Does that mean that each time his opponent focuses in a duel he can take that reaction to get a bonus equal to the opponet's focus?

Yes, provided they are opposing each other in a battle.

Akodo Fumio Question: Hoshi Wayan?

Wayan can only use the reaction in a battle, it did not work with Iajiutsu Art. However he still was not overlooked as a dueling monster. I used him all the time for duels in battles.

So, you could use his reaction during an iajitsu duel to copy your opponets focuses. Right? One token per focus. What if they have double-chi?

Double Chi makes the focus add twice [GE p. 65], creating two separate bonuses. He can copy one per token.

post for 28 October 2002

Yeah I *love* rumors. But seriously, I egzagurated a bit, and didn't make it obvous. Sorry for any bad feelings. But my question still stands - are there any plans to balance Shadowlands as a faction witht the rest of them, in regards to dishonor as an archetype?

No.

Double Chi (Was RE: [L5R-CCG] Akodo Fumio Question: Hoshi Wayan?)[JEFF]

Following up on the Hoshi Wayan discussion:

Jeff, if Double Chi causes a focus to add twice, is this treated as two separate chi bonuses? If so, are both bonuses created when the focus is played or is one generated when played and the other generated when the focus is revealed?

Yes. When played. (There is no reason I can think of to apply the second bonus at a different time from the first one.)

Continuing with Wayan (though the question generalizes to any effect that affects a focus by a Double Chi personality) can he burn two tattoo tokens (one for each bonus) when the focus is played or does he only burn one for the "base" value of the focus?

Already answered.

Overwhelmed conundrum

My opponent attacks with 2 units, led by a personalities with 4 and 6 force. I defend, and play Block Supply Lines on the 6 force personality. He plays A Test of Courage. He Passes. I play Overwhelmed, destroying my highest force personality. What happens now?

He can't destroy his higher force personality, because that would require targetting that unit, which he can't do because he played A Test of Courage.

He can't send two units home because that would require targetting his higher force personality, which he can't do.

He can't send home the 4 force personality, because he has to send home two units.

So does Overwhelmed have no effect on him in this situation?

He must send home the one unit he can.

So Importan Question for me, please anyone help me

First of all hi to everyone because it's my first time here.

Go to the question:

If I play an Uncertanty whick prevent a personality from dropping his/her chi under 1 this turn and put a -2F/-2C to this personality, may I swith his force and chi with an Energy transference (spell) to make him have a 0 chi (not dropping him).

Has this personality die?

Any time a minimum or maximum value is imposed on a card's stat, that minimum or maximum value is applied last, after all other modifications. [GE p. 31] Uncertainty puts a minimum value of 1 on a Personality's Chi. [card text] So if anything tries to reduce the Personality's Chi to 0 that turn, her Chi will only go down to 1.
