post for 28 October 2002
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Challenge Match for Kokujin's Daisho.
Unfortunately there are no specific rules to keep someone from doing so under the Code of Bushiso floor rules, in fact, there are no rules governing unsportsmanlike conduct whatsoever. It was legal.
I'd like to think that tournament organizers would have the common sense to disallow and penalize unsportsmanlike conduct in any form. If you ask me, it's kind of silly that the Code of Bushido says "cheating isn't allowed" -- and kind of sad that there are players who would insist it was allowed if that clause weren't present.
KYD
How many cards from KYD are going to be reprinted?
We have not yet decided entirely, but the number will be small regardless.
question
If i play to the last man and then surrender do the effects surrender cancel that of to the last man
You cannot play Surrender second, since Surrender is played during resolution and To the Last Man is played after. If Surrender is played and any units are spared, To the Last Man cannot be played since your entire army was not destroyed.
Overwhelmed?
Someone asked this question at the tournament yesterday, and I recalled that it was once ruled that blowing up one's own personality was an effect, but another player said that it'd been re-ruled as a cost.
It has not.
If it's an effect: 1) Can you play Overwhelmed if you have Cowardly Conscripts in the battle?
Yes. You target them and they go away, so the destruction doesn't happen, but that's alright because it doesn't need to.
2) Can you play Overwhelmed if you have a Garrison?
Not if that's all you have, because there is no unit to target.
Utaemon Legal?
I know this has been asked... But when does Hida Utaemon become tourney legal?
30 days after the first full set to come out after it, which will be The Fall of Otosan Uchi.
Dark Ring of Water
Do I have to destroy the army in the resolution phase to play the Dark Ring of Water?
The wording:
"Play this card after destroying a defending army or Province as the Attacker in a battle which had no attacking units assigned."
So, can I say, move in Moto Kumari and duel the sole defender, kill him, then play the DRoW?
GE rulebook p. 58: "Battle resolution is the only time the phrase 'destroying an army' is satisfied."
No.
Redirection question
If I have the Ring of Air in play, and my opponent casts Walking the Way:
A) I get to look at his entire Fate Deck, and redirect WtW to the card of my choosing.
B) I pick a card from his Fate Deck for him to draw, but I don't get to see what it is.
C) You don't get to redirect anything because searching your deck for a card is not an instance of targeting.
Jeff... Official card list for Time of Void and back please..
Jeff
Alot of us want to run 1kyod events with everything from TOV back to allow for the different storyline with 1kyod. Can we have an official list of every card that would be legal in said enviroment?
Sure! It would contain every card from Time of the Void back to Imperial.
Oh. You want to know what all those ARE?
In that case, I would humbly redirect you to Zen's site, http://l5r.shorturl.com , since he already has such lists assembled and we do not.
Solar Eclipse
Will Solar Eclipse re-honor personalities dishonored by Secrets on the Wind? Is the dishonored state of the personality a "current spell effect"?
No and no. Dishonoring the Personality, like killing one, is an instantaneous change, not an ongoing effect.
Need a Clarification/Ruling
I would like to get some opinions and a ruling on how these 2 cards work together.
Seppun Matsuo & Tonfa
Seppun Matsuo "may attach two weapons", if he has a weapon attached (not a tonfa) and no armor, and he then attaches a Tonfa, is he able to "attach a second Tonfa"?
As worded, that seems to be the case.
As it stands, Matsuo and any Dragon Personality, that is not a Samurai, and has Shiro no Nyoko attached are the only Gold legal ways to do this.
Them and every Dragon Clan Samurai in a Shiro Mirumoto deck.
Battle of Shallow Waters uestion
If I attack, boost my people, get hit with 'In Search of the Future', and then play 'Battle of Shallow Waters', what is the end result: are my boosts still negated, or does the ISotF get get whacked by the terrain?
A reduction of a bonus is not a penalty. [BB rulesheet] In Search of the Future does not create a penalty. Battle of Shallow Waters won't affect its reduction.
Akodo Fumio Question
Hida Tenshu Test of Mights Akodo Fumio. Fumio focuses. Tenshu focuses. Fumio strikes, and uses his reaction to copy Tenshu's force bonus from his focus, which then lasts until the end of the battle.
Minor point: Fumio is using his Reaction too late in your example. He has to do it as soon as the bonus is gained.
Major point: Focusing is not an action. Fumio can only copy bonuses caused by actions. [card text] Fumio can only copy bonuses during duels when they come from Reactions, such as Bend Like a Reed.
The question is, if there were multiple cards focused, would each one constitute a separate force bonus, or is the total of all the cards focused considered a single bonus?
Each one is a separate bonus that applies as soon as the card is focused...but again, it's not caused by an action.
Overwhelmed clarification request
I would like to have the answers for the following questions:
1. When I play overwhelmed and my highest force personality is bowed, I cannot target that personality right?
Yes...which means you can't play Overwhelmed.
2. What about my opponent, can he target his bowed personalities and send them home/kill them? ( the card says that my opponent must choose and select, so does it mean that they have to target the selected personality/personalities and the normal targeting rules apply?)
Yes, because the "normal targeting rules" do NOT prohibit players from targeting their bowed Personalities with OTHER PLAYERS' actions -- only with their own actions.
Card lists, Archive
hey, just one thing I did not find in the archive, but I clearly remember having read it on JA's posts... Open warfare does NOT trunp the dark path of shadow right?
Right. The Dark Path still takes priority.
Yet another Diamond Q for the design team
But to my question. Are there any plans to change the -19 FH for the Shadowlands? Now this is a really big question, as The Fall is introducing a more courtier enviroment (or so the rumors go).
Gotta love those rumors...
Mark Jelfo commented that he felt there are a few incredibly good Courtier actions in The Fall. For some reason, this was immediately interpreted as "the entire Fall of Otosan Uchi set is centered around Political actions," which is simply not true.
